A video message from Geoff Johns... link to CBR page just in case video doesn't workWell he's certainly saying a lot of the right things, but it's all spin until I see the proof in the pudding. It will all be about execution. They have announced 4 exclusive creator signings... Tom King (rumored to be new Batman writer) Sam Humphries Clay Mann John Timms and that Johns will be leaving Justice League... I am sure more will follow. follow ups... it's an event too starting with this... -M

For those that care about trade dress and things on the cover, it looks like Action and Detective will return to original numbering for Rebirth.
Action will restart at #957 and Detective at #934.
both look to be twice monthly titles at $2.99 to build towards big issue #1000 marketing blitzes (I mean stories). -M

Here's a mixed bit...
Glad to see them going back to the $2.99 price point for DCU books but it's still $6 a month since it is twice-monthly.

To say this is long overdue is an understatement.
It's always darkest before the dawn. The New 52 was an experiment with varied results. I think it came from up on high, when the DC editorial staff had that big meeting with Diane Nelson and some of the publishing big wigs in Burbank about 6 months before Flashpoint hit. In fact, I remember seeing a half dozen pictures including Didio, Lee and others, but there were hardly any details what it was about. I'm positive it was what initiated the New 52.
Finally, with Geoff John's Rebirth mission moving forward, this will broaden the spotlight from the New 52 to the rest of the DCU / multiverse that we haven't been seeing, except for Earth-2 and Earth-3 and glimpses of others from Multiversity.
Like Grant Morrison had said, everything published has happened. The DCU is huge. Geoff Johns can do it if anyone can.
This was always the plan anyway, IMO. They built up the New 52 and now they keep that and expand to other concepts and earths in the multiverse.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing Pandora again.
I'm definitely buying that kick off 80 page giant.

New titles
The Super-Man Superwoman The Super Sons
also see Titans and Teen Titans
At least everything is in Rebirth, and no hold outs like Batman, GL and LSH last time.
We all knew Action and Detective would revert eventually.

The new lineup of books doesn't do much for me. It's too conservative in the choice of titles. Say what you will about their quality, but the New 52 launch titles at least took some chances.
Definitely getting that Blue Beetle book, though.

They had me at bringing back legacy stuff, they lost me by making the books twice-monthly. I can't afford that, now I have no choice but to drop the books I am buying.

I'm glad they're keeping Gotham Academy, I loved that book and had thought that perhaps it might get the ax during rebirth.

Right now, I am likely to check out the Rebirth 80 page special to see what's what, if I like what I see there, I may pick up a couple of the other Rebirth Specials to sample the new status quo. Those I like I will pick up when trades come out or read if the library gets the trades. It's great that the price point is $2.99, but I am still not getting enough value for the dollar in a 20 page comic for that price point. If they offered print subs at 40-45% off like Marvel does, I might commit to one or two titles, or if they offered a digital sub service like Marvel Unlimited, I would sign up to read as much or as little as I wanted at my discretion, but the monthly (or bi-weekly) print floppy format at a comic shop is pretty much dead to me as a modern consumer.
For as much as Rebirth is addresssing what people perceive as the mistakes or missing elements DC made with the new52, it is still appealing to the hardcore niche customer of the direct market and looking to reslice the existing pie, there's nothing in the initiative intended to grow the readership beyond the hardcore audience who frequent the lcs, mail order or Comixology already in place, so while it will bring some spikes in sales and marketshare, it won't make a damn bit of difference in the long term viability of the market and medium. It doesn't address anything that is limiting the viability of the product to mass audiences and leqaves them in a position to have to do something else to shake things up in a couple of years when marketshare attrition set in once again.
Didio said their goal is to position DC to never need to reboot again, that is not a viable goal unless you address the ceiling that exists on sale sin the direct market and find a way to get the product into a format that appeals to a mass audience. The direct market has devolved into a vicious circle and things like Rebirth are part of that cycle, not the means to escape form it. If they did all this and announced a publishing initiative that broadened the scope of the appeal of the product and it reach into a larger potential audience, then there would be something to actually be excited about, but they are falling back on the "if we build it, they will come" mentality that doesn't work, hasn't worked for 2 decades, and won't work with modern consumers.
As a sidenote, the Diamond truck accident I posted about in the Meanwhile thread highlights the problem with the Direct Market-books are printed to preorders (this is why they may have to allocate some of the books lost/damaged in the accident, there are no more because only enough to cover what was ordered by retailers for initial orders were printed). Mass audience will not pre-order the book. There's no product available to grow the audience even if they could get people to come when they build it. Growing the market is not the concern or the goal for Marvel and DC, it's capturing as much of the existing (and shrinking) market a they can. It's a self-defeating strategy and a self-fulfilling plan for destruction of the market eventually. Abandoning the larger mass market to focus on the direct market already cost them 1 and now possibly 2 generations of new readers they will never get back, and their response is to stick their head in the sand and try to milk as much out of the existing customer base before it disappears rather than try to do anything to grow the market and capitalize on the massive popularity of the properties in other mediums and formats right now.
Let's keep repeating the mistakes of the pat and hope we get a different outcome this time is a great leadership strategy and vision. Not.

As you might have guessed from MRP's post, I'm happy.
I'll get the REBIRTH SPECIAL in May then based on titles alone...
June: Rebirth Specials: AQUAMAN REBIRTH #1 BATMAN REBIRTH #1 THE FLASH REBIRTH #1 GREEN LANTERNS REBIRTH #1 SUPERMAN REBIRTH #1 TITANS REBIRTH #1 WONDER WOMAN REBIRTH #1

New #1 Issues (Shipping twice monthly): HAL JORDAN & THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1 JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 NIGHTWING #1
New #1 Issues (Shipping monthly): BATGIRL #1 BATGIRL & THE BIRDS OF PREY #1 THE SUPER-MAN #1 TITANS #1

New #1 Issues (Shipping twice monthly): CYBORG #1 JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #1
New #1 Issues (Shipping monthly): BLUE BEETLE #1 EARTH 2 #1 SUPERGIRL #1 SUPERWOMAN #1 SUPER SONS #1 TEEN TITANS #1 TRINITY #1
New 52 debut titles Sept 2011: 26/ 52 (50%) May 2016 regular DCU titles: 22/ 37 (59%) Rebirth regular titles: 24/32 (75%) weighted for the double shipping: 37/49 (76%)
DC dollars May 2016 (regular titles only and no discount): $82 DC dollars by Fall 2016: $111
I'm thrilled that Action and Detective will return to the original numbering.
There could still be a few flies in the ointment out there, like someone not named Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, but things look good so far.
As far as creators go, there was exactly one of the New 52 where I really liked both the writer and artist. (Aquaman with Johns and Reis) I'm not getting my hopes up on that front, especially on the art side.
Only three more monthlies to get to 52 issues a month: give me Legion of Super-Heroes, Shazam! and The Atom.

Well there was a classic Legion image in the video when Johns was talking about what was missing from the current DC, so that may be a winter debut (since everything up through Fall was listed). I think Shazam is in wait and see mode to see if the film slate is altered after BvS, or it could be the title Johns goes to since he is leaving Justice League with #50. Who knows.

I initially posted this at the other thread, before I knew we started a new one just for Rebirth.
--
So the latest news is that, among other developments, ALL the books will be going back to a $2.99 price point....
... with the added wrinkle that most of the "core" DCU titles will be going bimonthly. Seems like it's the usual suspects -- JL, Action, Batman, Superman, 'Tec, Flash, Green Lanterns, WW, etc.
Looks like I'll be dropping DC monthlies completely going forward.

DC is moving in a better direction.
mrp, my friend, I understand your frustration with the limitations of the direct market.
As you know, 99% of what I purchase are digital comics from Comixology, Dark Horse digital, and Sequential Art. I think digital is a step in the right direction giving instant access to practically anyone. Full retail price is way above what you and I and others are comfortable with; it's artificially high to be able to support the direct system and tiered discounts.
Hypothetically, say you were a consultant to DC or Marvel. What would you have them do to expand the market ?
The biggest thing in my mind is, to Joe Q. Public, comics = superheroes.
That, to me, is the biggest problem.
How do you get people to either a. care enough to try a superhero comic for the first time, or b. be compelled, and informed of, a different non-superhero comic or graphic novel, and being willing to read it ?
Believe this or not, a past girlfriend, a smart educated professional, wasn't sure how to even read one. I really couldn't believe it.
