The first Composite Superman story (World's Fienst #142) had him easily mopping the floor with both Superman and Batman. Really, there was no logical way they could have defeated an enemy who not only had the combined strength of Mon-El, Ultra Boy, et. al., but also Brainiac 5's genius and Saturn Girl's telepathy. The writer basically gave up and had Comp-Supes' powers conveniently fade away before he could finish off the heroes for good.

I was looking for examples from INSIDE the comics. Covers many times, are misleading. Well here's the final panel to Avengers 161, clocks cleaned! and the first page of the next issue showing theAvengers getting loaded into ambulances...clocks still cleaned... -M

This is the scene that launched a thousand debates. I'm of the opinion that, Although Superman should win, It should have been a hard fought battle instead of a 8 panel knockout. I'm saying this as a big fan of both Thor and Superman.

Batman gets a whoop-ass here. Not just getting his clock cleaned, his back got broken. I began to enjoy this storyline more than Superman at the time...

Pretty bad when even Zook can clean your Martian clock...

I'm saying this as a big fan of both Thor and Superman. Yeah, stuff like that pretty much spoiled JLAvengers for me as a story. But I was always going to have a problem with the DC characters, most of which I don't like that much in the first place, so I read it mostly for Perez's artwork. As for Thor vs Superman specifically, I always think it's better to leave that kind of struggle between near-equals ambiguous (though personally I'd say Thor would have the edge), but unfortunately most comics fans and writers revere Superman as the first superhero to such a degree that they can't imagine any outcome that wouldn't show Superman as the clear winner. And to add insult to injury, Thor is made to look kind of stupid later on when he says the Avengers have the edge in power over the JLA while it's clear we're meant to think the opposite.

The Surfer being one of my favorites. This disturbed me when I first read it in the late 80's. Granted, the Runner's an Elder of the Universe and has had billions of years to gain power....but it still hurt.

Infinity Gauntlet #4. Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, She-Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Cloak, Quasar, Dr. Doom, Iron Man, Wolverine, Cyclops, Hulk, Vision*... all killed/injured/lost in time against Thanos. The major heroes not present are mostly absent because Thanos had killed them with a snap of his finger in issue #1. goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2009/07/04/a-year-of-cool-comic-book-moments-day-185/*I think I did pretty well with that list from memory but I must be forgetting someone. It's like the 7 dwarves.

The mutant massacre in Uncanny X-Men #210 and 211 was a pretty severe smackdown... Kitty trapped in her intangible form and dissipating fast, Colossus paralyzed, Nightcrawler so severely injured that he remained in a coma for months, and Angel (in X-Factor, but still an X-person) pinned to a wall and losing his wings. Oh, and naturally the ignominy of not having been able to prevent the death of dozens of Morlocks. That was severe!
I don't think the title ever really recovered from that. The magic never truly came back.

Daredevil's identity is blown and Matt gets completely effed up. This is worse than a beatdown...it is Daredevil's literal descent into insanity and destitution at the hands of the Kingpin.
