Sparked by a conversation I was having with icctrombone, what's your stance on comic book adaptations of TV show, movie, and book properties? Will you automatically buy a comic featuring a property you enjoy in other media, do you avoid these adaptations like the plague, or do you have your own middle ground?

I think most licensed comics are pretty bad, but there are exceptions to the rule, so I am sometimes willing to give them a try. I just read a Sherlock Holmes trade from Dynamite and it was actually pretty good. Not great, but better than I feared it might be.
Conan is probably the best licensed comic from other media.

Conan is probably the best licensed comic from other media. I would add Roy Thomas and P. Craig Russell's Elric, as well as the Marvel and Mr. Comics adaptations of Planet of the Apes to that list. Possibly Kirby's 2001: A Space Odyssey too. I need to re-read it.

I used to not be interested in them at all. I had comic adaptations of Labyrinth and Police Academy as a kid but didn't think much of them at the time. My brother collected Topps Jurassic Park comics, Marvel's Power Rangers, Archie Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures and Sonic the Hedgehog but I wasn't much interested in those either. I did enjoy some of Marvel's The Ren & Stimpy Show though.
It wasn't until I read Star Wars Heir to the Empire as a young adult that I realized how good some of these stories could be. That's when I started getting into not only Star Wars comics but other comics like Doctor Who, Firefly, Star Trek, William Shatner's TekWorld, etc.

Was Tekworld actually worth reading? I never gave it a try.

Sidenote: I found a stack of Bronze Age Marvel adaptations of The Odyssey earlier this year and bought them for my English 9 classes. I haven't figured out a good way to make use of them yet, but the stack only cost me $9, and the cover is a beauty: So what about adaptations of novels and literature -- Classic Illustrated, Manga Shakespeare, even adaptions of pulp hero properties?

I don't know if I have that Labrynth issue of Marvel Super Special or not, but I want it. I had an issue of Police Academy, I wasn't into it either. I liked Alf though.

This set of 5 books is quite a faithful adaptation of the movie The Warriors.
There's also a follow up series (which could have been a good sequel to the movie) which features The Warriors and the Gramercy Riffs forming an alliance to spring Ajax and Riff members from prison....

Now that I think about it, most Disney comics are adaptations. I love those.

Now that I think about it, most Disney comics are adaptations. I love those. But the best ones really aren't. Carl Barks and Don Rosa write very different Ducks than the Disney cartoons portray, and Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse is definitely different as well.

Once home video was available I avoided all comic adaptations. And even after trying them,I was no big fan of Marvels Star Wars or Planet of the Apes.Didn't like Star Trek comics as well.Never wanted to read novelizations of media property either. My picadillos gave me more time to read other things so it worked out fine

I enjoyed the Star Trek Doctor Who crossover that there was a picture up from before. Was Tekworld actually worth reading? I never gave it a try. The couple issues I read were decent as was the Lee Sullivan artwork. I've never read the TekWar novels to compare them though. I remember not being very impressed by the live action version either.

My picadillos gave me more time to read other things so it worked out fine I agree that home video made most of the direct adaptations superfluous (though some were surprisingly well done, and others interesting in the purposeful changes they made), but when done correctly, comic adaptations had the ability to keep the story going once the film franchise or television series was concluded. Home video isn't really a viable competitor to that.

I don't know if I have that Labrynth issue of Marvel Super Special or not, but I want it. This is the issue I've had since I was a kid drawn by John Buscema. I had an issue of Police Academy, I wasn't into it either. I still have the same issue I got as a kid. I wasn't very good when I revisited it a few years ago. This set of 5 books is quite a faithful adaptation of the movie The Warriors. I love that movie.

Walter Hill needs to do more with comics. (I'm still afraid to read the Bullet to the Head comic, because it's probably not as good, then I'll be sad.) He's on record as a comics fan, and he's got a pretty solid record - for my money - in movies.
