Sparked by a conversation I was having with icctrombone, what's your stance on comic book adaptations of TV show, movie, and book properties? Will you automatically buy a comic featuring a property you enjoy in other media, do you avoid these adaptations like the plague, or do you have your own middle ground? From TV, I find it almost impossible. The mannerisms of the actors and the voices are too ingrained in my head. From prose, I'm always interested. Paul Auster's City of Glass and the Kavalier and Clay sequel, the Escapists, are two of my favorite comics. Loosely speaking, another of my favorite comics is Greendale.

This set of 5 books is quite a faithful adaptation of the movie The Warriors.
There's also a follow up series (which could have been a good sequel to the movie) which features The Warriors and the Gramercy Riffs forming an alliance to spring Ajax and Riff members from prison....
Wow! That is going on the want list right away. Warriors is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I miss the days of the movie adaptations. I think the last one from Marvel I think Spider-Man 2, with Alan Davis artwork. I have a nice stack of those old 70s/80s Marvel movie books. My favorite is For Your Eyes Only
Good ol' Howard Chaykin artwork. I presented this to Chaykin to get signed at a convention a few years ago. Now, I've known Howard for about 15 years and I know his humor and attitude. When I put that in front of him, he looked up at me and went "Really? C'mon Ryan.. you can do better than this tripe." But Howard knows I'm a fan of his work, signed it along with his Indiana Jones issues and various books I pulled out of my collection...
But back to the question. If the writers catch the spirit of the properties correctly, they can be good. Dynamite's Lone Ranger comics was one of the better properties that I enjoyed.

It's probably one of the toughest things to get right but when it is done well it can make for some good comics. The Grimm series from Dynamite for example I think nailed the actors voices. I also think that Scott and David Tipton where able to capture each of the Doctor's voices perfectly in Prisoners of Time.

I think I have more nostalgia for those Darkwing Duck comics Disney Adventures used to run than I do even the actual cartoon.

By the way, one of my all time favorite licensed comics was a Dead Space miniseries illustrated by Ben Templesmith. It wasn't as if they were trying to quick cash on a hot franchise, or to use the comics to simply be a cheap advert for the video game, the comic stands on it's own. I've never even played the games.

Wow! That is going on the want list right away. Warriors is one of my favorite movies of all time. Mine too, I'd be Lizzies material except I'd shoot better The comics are hard to find but there is a TPB if you want all 5 right away. I was lucky to get the photo wraparound cover to #1 when I came upon it.

The Buffy comics did it as well as I've ever seen it done, but I ended up just missing the actors.

Definitely worth seeking out though. My dad grew up about 3 blocks away from Van Cortlandt Park where they filmed the big fight scene in the Wanderers. My grandfather still lives over there.
