I've been recently enjoying reading a bunch of Shazam comics, particularly the Shazam! The New Beginning mini-series by Roy Thomas post-Crisis. I still just think in the back of my mind somewhere, I have the perception of him as a villain due to my first exposure (and only exposure for many, many years): and Most of my comic likes or dislikes were born out of the dozen or so comic book issues that I kept in the bottom of my dresser from the time I was 4 until I actually started collecting comics when I was 14.

Ha! Agreed. I think superheroes, in general, are Goofisaurus Maximus, and have always been goofy in every era, form, and medium. Yeah, and, traditionally (meaning from the Golden Age), there was always a thin line from serious to goofy that superheroes jumped back and forth over, probably more than any other non-humor genre: This pretty much disappeared when the Silver Age ended; have to check dates, but the death of Mort Weisinger might've been the real end. Weisinger retired in 1970, when Julie Schwartz took over SUPERMAN and ACTION COMICS. Some have said DC/National forced Weisinger out, but he went more easily because his good friend Schwartz was taking over(instead of some long-haired punk ). Weisinger died, in relative obscurity, in 1978. DC had a text page tribute, which ran in the Superman books only, while Marvel tacked on the briefest of acknowledgements to a Bullpen Bulletins page(early in Jim Shooter's reign).

So you're the one who likes it. Guilty as charged. That mini gets a bad rep but I think Thomas had some interesting ideas in it. If you want to read another underappreciated Shazam run, then search out his feature in World's Finest which ran from #253 to around #282. E Nelson Bridwell crafted stories that combined the slight whimsy of his Golden Age with more Bronze Age mentalities while I would rank Don Newton's art as being among the best ever showcasing Cap and his Marvel Family.

It didn't do anything to the Hawks... Yeah, that came later(ZERO HOUR). They messed the Hawks up trying to place Hawkworld in present-day, years before Zero Hour attempted to rectify their issues.

For me I prefer the Golden Age Hawkman > Silver Age Hawkman. Same for Green Lantern (Alan>Hal). For Flash & The Atom I like the Silver Age version better.

I like silver age better for all of those, but I like the others (especially Jay Garrick) and don't see why we can't have both.

And I agree. one of the reasons I did not like Crisis. I LOVED Earth One & Earth Two.
For me the Flash, Green Lantern & the Atom all changed in appearance & origin. The Hawks stayed almost identical in appearance, only their origin changed. And as I read both Hawkmen I liked the GA Hawkman origin more.

I agree with you - I always enjoyed the Golden Age Hawkman over the Silver Age Hawkman by a country mile. I hated the infinite earth concept and I always loved Earth One and Earth Two!

Cool. I'm making my way through Power of Shazam right now, but I'll keep these issues in mind for when I'm finished with that series.

But you have to admit that the Golden age characters got more page time after the crisis. You only ever saw them in the yearly JLA team-up before there Crisis.
