And instead of letting the show and stories speak for themselves, lets remind everyone out there just how progressive and wonderful we at the BBC are in a commercial telling you how we are breaking stereotypes and all of the rules before actually showing you. Hype wagon full speed ahead. Makes me believe this was planned for quite a while and driven by higher up directives and decisions than creative reasons. Lets take the Doctor back to being a cranky old man with #12 while setting up the idea through the Master being a woman so it will not be such a shock and more readily acceptable. Let the Doctor be a Follower who mimics others and not a Leader/trend setter. How much more powerful would it have been instead to never have built up this line of reasoning/discussions and just ended the season with the female Doctor arising from the transformation? Don't hype it or set it up, be daring and just do it!!! That would have created so much more energy and anticipation for the new season...

She does seem to have that optimism that he portrayed early on, I'm really liking what we've seen on the companions as well.

I'm all for the change in storytelling tone. I just wish they could have tried it before Capaldi left, instead of all the years of 'Moffat companion wank'.

Enjoyed the global simulcast and the premiere of the 13th Doctor. I think the show is in good hands with Chris Chibnall at the helm and Jodie Whittaker does quite well in the roll. She has a sort of endearing charm to her as The Doctor. The villain was proper creepy although a bit derivative. The companions didn't annoy me and I thought there was some interesting threads laid for character arcs. Looking forward to seeing more.

I liked the companions a lot actually, and I'm interested to see how the grandfather relationship plays out.

I'd say I'm moderately pleased and cautiously optimistic.
I found Peter Capaldi's last two seasons (particularly his middle season) to be underwhelming, so this is an upward trend. I think Jodie Whittaker did a great job of capturing a new Doctor - elements of past incursion mixing in with individual flavor. She's less of a scenery chewer than the last couple Doctors. I'd say like Peter Davison mixed with Tennant in his more restrained moments.
With new Who, when a new Companion is interested, they typically get so much screen time and character development in their first episode. In this case, there were a lot of Companions (or Friends now) to juggle. Hopefully, it won't be so hard with Grace's sad demise, but it's also a shorter than usual season. At least there's only a small gap between the end of the season and the Christmas special.
But I think Doctor Who actually works well tonally when it's got a good bit of the whimsical, cheesy, and corny, so this was a bit realistic tone that I associate with the show. The musical score was more generically action/sci-fi than I expect from Doctor Who. The episode reminds me a bit of the Christmas Invasion in that I didn't find the villain that interesting, and felt we were just getting to know the new Doctor. Like Tennant, we didn't get to see the new outfit until the end. We still haven't seen her TARDIS interior.

In a lot of ways the next episode will be the "real" first episode as this one was more about introducing the companions than giving us a real good look at the Doctor and her world.
