I'm just now seeing this thread, as I've been busy with work and poor Internet connections lately...  I just wanted to say I don't think it would have been an intrusion at all, as long as there wasn't a notice about the funeral being for family only.  When my uncle passed some years ago, I was very glad to meet some of the many many farflung people he touched who made the trip.   Even just showing up to the service and sitting quietly in the back is a great sign of respect for the deceased.
