Hey folks, on behalf of the mods and site admin can I please ask you all to refrain from posting comments relating to the U.S. election (regardless of your political affiliation). I realise that it's a subject that most of us feel very passionate and/or concerned about, but with things currently as tight as they are there's a concern that discussion here will get heated. So, for the sake of forum harmony and in order to preserve the CCF as a tranquil refuge from the political turmoil of the outside world, please refrain from posting election-centric or politically-themed comments. Thank you. Sorry about that :/ Hey, no problem Batflunkie. No harm, no foul.

Reminds me of the Marine Corps physical fitness test, for women. We had to pass the Marine Corps test for the first half of my midshipman time, in college, which was a 3 mile run, sit-ups in 2 minutes and pull-ups. The women had the same thing, except they had a "flex-arm hang" instead of pull-ups. They, basically, held their chin above the bar for as long as their arms would hold out. Looked pretty much like that cat. I was disappointed when I discovered that they don't insist on dead-hangs for the pull-ups. They let you kip (rhythmic swinging), which obviously inflates the number you can do. 20 kipped pull-ups does not impress Crom. At least you can't kip push-ups. Oh, yeah; we all learned to do a kip, or as close as we could get. I'm 5ft 6 and have short arms, and never had great upper body strength. Also, gymnastics aren't my forte; so, the best I could manage was about a half kip, to get me close and then muscle the rest of the way. 20 was max points and the best I managed, via that method, was 13. I could always get the 80 sit-ups; but, I also have short legs; so, I could never get close to 18 minutes for the 3-mile run. I think my best was under 22 minutes. We had one guy in my year, who was about 20 pounds underweight and was a beanpole. He could do a full kip and just looked like a pole rotating on the chin-up bar. However, if they made him dead-hang, he could only manage 3. Aside from the sheer monotony of the run (the indoor track at the Armory, at the Univ of Illinois, was 1/6th of a mile; so, 18 laps for 3 miles), pull ups were my worst, as I had to use a chair to get to the bar, as jumping used up too much energy. The bars at the Armory were about 8 feet up there and I couldn't always catch hold on the first go (bars were old, too). On my second midshipman training cruise, I had the dubious "fun" of going through the BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) School obstacle course (well, they wouldn't let us do a couple of the obstacles, for fear of injury) and it was mostly upper body stuff and was one big suckfest, for me. You start out on parallel bars, with your elbows locked and feet off the ground. You have to work your way along the bars, without your feet touching. If that wasn't bad enough, it drops down to a lower height, then does so again, towards the end. if you touch, you go back to the start and go again. That's followed by a rope wall. The last week of training was at Camp Pendleton, for Marine Week. That involved another obstacle course that was another suckfest. At one point, there is a set of log rails that you are supposed to pull yourself over, after punning down a timber that is perpendicular to it. I just started walking across the tops of them, since I could reach; but was told that I couldn't do it like that. I asked why not, since I was clearing the obstacle in the most efficient manner. Marines have no sense of humor.

Hmm yeah well, on top of everything else 2020 has had to offer, our county board of health issued a warning today that there is a syphilis outbreak in our county. I guess some folks forgot to social distance.

(That's my memory, at least, so it might be a bit of an exaggeration.) That was a real Bill And Ted day for me. DI: "Today we will be tackling the Stairway To Heaven" Me: "Excellent!" DI points over yonder...Me: "Bogus!"

'Welp, we've had connectivity issues here at home since Tuesday evening/Wednesday, and haven't been able to access the internet at all or get any TV since Thursday. Thought at first it was just the volume of traffic slowing things down the first night, but it wasn't. Found out the issue was the most recent updates from our ISP, which our modem was too old to process, so they had to come out and install a new modem and update our network settings, so voila I'm back (much to many people's chagrin I am sure ) It was kind of weird not being able to access to internet or the the TV while all the election drama played out. Kind of peaceful in a way with no urge to check on how things were going because I had no access to check on things (I don't have a smartphone either so I was in an info void which was in a way blissful. The only time I saw stuff was at work, but then work has been a sh*tshow for weeks anyways, so it is about as anti-Zen as you can be. -M

This makes me wonder what I'd do if we had no over-the-air radio stations anymore, it's sort of the last resort when all else fails for information via a battery or crank radio.

You can always read a book; no batteries required. Well, except for e-books; but, until they can replicate the smell of old paper, they don't count.

Books are indeed great to pass the time, but not a lot of help when you want to know how long the power outage will last.

I spent most the week I was out of power sitting in the truck burning gas charging various phones and back up batteries. Kids now, not to sound like an old curmudgeon, really are a generation completely raised on electronics and don't know what to do without them. Though I'm not gonna lie that I missed not being able to play on my Xbox1.

So I’m hanging out waiting for the results of a COVID test. One of the attorneys in my office was positive a week and a half ago or so.
So that’s fun.
Not.

So I’m hanging out waiting for the results of a COVID test. One of the attorneys in my office was positive a week and a half ago or so. So that’s fun. Not. Sorry to hear that, my friend. I'll be praying your test turns out negative and that you stay healthy. We've been dealing with some COVID-related drama of our own. The place where my mom lives has two positive cases, so they're on total lockdown and she's freaking out because she might not be able to come to Thanksgiving dinner (the lockdown ends on 11/24, with the holiday two days later). On top of that, we got an e-mail late last week that our younger daughter may have been in close contact at school with someone who tested positive (it turned out to be her Social Studies teacher). Thankfully, it's been a week and her temperature hasn't been above 99.4 degrees any morning, as we were instructed to take it every day. Take care!
