Caring for our ailing parents is one of our most noble callings and also one of our greatest struggles. I'm there, myself. We continue to be here for you, The Captain. I'm so glad you feel comfortable venting with us and letting us offer you support.

I've been enjoying Keith DeCandido's rewatches of the 1966 Batman series on Tor.com. www.tor.com/series/holy-rewatch-batman/One of his favorite things is the "giant lighted lucite map of Gotham City". I've just realized that "giant lighted lucite map of Gotham City" has exactly the same rhythm as "one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people eater". My sanity is now in danger.

I guess I should have bought some Gamestop stock in college and sat on it for a few decades.

I know it's only a TMZ "expert" who's confirming the image is unaltered...but maybe the truth is out there? I'm definitely very skeptical but after all the other craziness of the last year, why no add on first contact in 2021?

Update: Mom is still in the hospital on her 10th day now. She's "stable", but her oxygen requirements are still fairly high and the doctors found a clot in her lungs. More distressing is that when my sister (who is a doctor within the same hospital group and was able to pull some strings) went to visit her yesterday, our mom only kind of recognized her, barely remembered my and my wife's names, and couldn't remember my daughters' names. The doctor caring for our mom wouldn't put a number on it, but he said it "could go either way with her", so my sister took that as "50/50" she will survive. We know she won't recover fully from this, and that even if she does get through this illness, the same mental and physical decline that we saw with our grandmother will set in and it will likely be a long slog to the finish line unless she just gives up and stops fighting.
On a positive note, my older daughter is having quite the season as a freshman swimmer for our high school. In 12 solo events, she has one 1st place, three 2nd places, three 3rd places, two 4th places, two 5th places, and only one 6th place finish (the only spot that doesn't earn any points). She's holding her own against older, bigger, more-experienced girls and contributing to the team's success, as they currently have a 4-2 record on the season (they have lost to their two biggest rivals, but they only lost to one of them by a score of 94-92 even though that team had a more veteran roster).
Also, they are relaxing the restrictions a little bit, so we are actually going to get to see her in person for the first time on Friday night (or Thursday, if they move the meet to avoid conflict with a HS basketball game at the school at the same time). I'll be on deck as a timekeeper while my wife and our other daughter get to sit in the stands for the event. I'm a little bummed that I won't really be able to watch and cheer for her, as I will be "working" the event, but after only getting to see her via streaming methods for the first seven meets (including the Tuesday meet), it will be nice to be back in the pool area, smelling the chlorine and getting my feet soaked by the splash.

Congrats to your daughter on her athletic successes, The Captain! Here's hoping your mother gets better soon. Since you mentioned her memory was getting faulty pre-covid, I wouldn't worry overmuch about her current lapses; her body probably has its hands full just fighting the infection. I am convinced that in her heart or hearts, she fully knows who you and your family are, and is happy for your love.

What a bizarre juggling act of the awful scenario with your mother and your daughter's accomplishments and the joy and pride that goes with it. Life is weird, man. Wishing the best for you and your family.

Well, the other shoe dropped. My wife was let go from her job today. She broke her ankle around 2 weeks ago. We have savings so I anticipate that we will be okay.

Not to be nosy, but are you saying that her injury led to her being fired? I'm not a lawyer, but that doesn't sound quite right.

I don't really blame her employer. They didn't want to wait the 6 weeks, she's a housekeeper.

I haven't really been talking about it, but my Spouse had throat surgery to remove cancerous cells in mid January (they found them over the holidays, after he'd been in remission for ~7 years).
the good news is that the surgery went well, and they think they got all of the cancerous cells. (the margins were clear, and it's healing well). .and that his Oncologist and Radiologist haven't been in a huge rush to see him, I'm taking as a great sign. His first appt. post surgery with the Radiologist is a virtual one, and not until Friday).
the bad news is that he's having all kinds of side effects - mainly from the anesthesia given during the surgery, and the medication prescribed for the pain after - that have started a domino effect, that has resulted in multiple trips to ER and to a Urologist over the past two weeks.
they still dont' know exactly what's going on, and after 3 attempts to remove the catheter (including two emergency trips back to have another one placed), the Urologist is finally doing a procedure tomorrow to see if they can figure out what's up. . . but it's likely something has triggered a flare in his MS - he's also having some issues walking at the moment.
luckily we both have very understanding bosses, who have no issue with the amount of time off being needed to take him back and forth to Doctors. . so at least we are getting work done in the afternoons, and we're both still employed!
anyways. . that's my vomitus update! (whee, right?)
