I sometimes feel tempted to get a cat myself, but the problems of travel and living in a tiny apartment have held me back up to now.

This is the "kitten," Aja (I call her Aja Kong, but she was named for a Steely Dan song, by the wife). The photo sums up how we roll.... She jumps up to snuggle, then starts biting when she is done! My buddy, Derek, the Cleric ...... (note the white patch around his collar bone; hence, "The Cleric") My little buddy, Mr Man, who adopted me, but whose kidneys failed him...... and my wife's bosom companion, Girlie, who is also no longer with us.... Not seen is Derek's playmate, Punky, another beige and ginger tabby, who got out during a move, and disappeared. We never got a chance to get a photo of him. Needless to say, in summer, the couch has more hair on it than I do.

Yes, that's not exactly an ideal situation for a single cat... the travel part I mean. Most domestic breeds are social animals, and need either a human or another animal to interact with. A bored cat can easily become a destructive cat. Overnight travel probably wouldn't be bad, but if you travel for several days at a time, it's just not fair to the animal to have them cooped up alone in an apartment. Many cats have a tendency to bond with a singular family member. When that member is not present, it can cause stress to the animal if left alone for an extended period.

Well said, TP. Quoted for truth.

I used to have to look after a cat every weekend. Well, look after is the wrong word. My neighbour went to stop with her boyfriend on a Friday evening, returning Sunday nighttime. So I had to feed the cat Fri night, Sat morning, Sat night and Sun morning. It felt odd having a neighbour’s key and having to go in her apartment (paranoid I might knock a vase over or something), but I did this for at least 2 years.
Her cat did have an “aura” of loneliness about it. After preparing their food and bowl of water, I did try and offer them some interaction for a while, but I obviously could not stay there for longer than, say, ten minutes. It felt wrong.
I later moved on. Another neighbour, Debbie, who I kept in contact with, took on the chore. I bumped into her one day and she told me she had fallen out with the neighbour. Apparently, Debbie was unavailable one weekend, so this person had put the cat in the kitchen for an entire weekend. Yes, there were numerous bowls of food and water left out, but her kitchen was small. Can’t believe the cat had to spend a 2 nights/3 days in there. All the food and water in the world won’t help them with their isolation/anxiety.
Other plans should be in place. When my sister goes on holiday, she takes her cat to the local cattery (I can’t look after my sister’s cat as it’s too unruly and I can’t control it).

I'm not really a cat person, they make me sneeze. Dogs don't.
However, I did visit a friend once and she had a huge, black tabby.....it walked up to me and jumped on my lap and then put its paws on my bosom while looking me in the eye. Quite a friendly chap, enjoyed being petted....my friend was amazed because her pet never saw me before but took an instant interest in me.

Animals tend to do that to my step father. He's not a big pet person, but man would they try and win him over
He does love our dog Lynette though

Hey, gang, just letting you know I'll be unreachable for a few days as I'm heading out to my sister's place later today. I'm in serious need of some downtime to recharge my physical, mental and emotional batteries. Don't do anything I wouldn't do while I'm gone and I'll catch you on the flipside.
Cei-U! I summon the li'l vacay!

Whenever a semester ends and I mark copies, I feel the urge to add a note to next semester's exams:
"You must answer the question that is actually asked. You are not free to rewrite it into a different question and answer that instead".
I mean, sometimes it almost goes like this :
Q1 : Please describe a gorilla.
A1 : A zebra is an ungulate living in Africa, where three distinct species are extant. It is well known for its striped black and white coat.

That's like being asked to describe poutine and instead giving a description for poitín.

I would be lenient if someone described Poutine, though.

I would be lenient if someone described Poutine, though. Oh! I know this one: a species of weasel from northern Europe.

You know that from now on, you'll have to be wary of every cup of tea offered to you, right?
