Arrgh...I hate variant covers that tempt me. I am working on the Diamond order for my LCS and just noticed DC is doing a ton of Batman variants on many of their titles (both Batbooks and non-batbooks) a theme celebrating the 75th anniversary of Batman. No minimum order threshold like some variants, so shops can order as many as they want...no big whoop, not really into variants, until I learned Steranko did one of the variants for Detective #33. Me want Steranko cover. Me hate variants. Soooo conflicted... -M Think of it as an alternate cover, not a variant. Problem solved

It's funny: I've been spending more time on the Classics forum since we jumped the good ship CBR than I can remember spending in ages (Classic Christmas time excepted, natch) despite the demands of my Alter Ego assignment. The break has, I guess, reinvigorated me. Anybody else experiencing anything similar?
Cei-U! I summon the renewed enthusiasm!

More details are being released about the new edition of Dungeons and Dragons. linkThe Basic version of the game will now be a free PDF taking the cue from MMORPGs like World of Warcraft. If you want the more advanced game you can buy the classic three book set of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master Guide and Monster Manual. My casual players and those on a budget will be quite happy with this news.

See, the good thing about variants is it does translate into more work for classic artists. I've happily bought variant covers by Joe Kubert, Ramona Fradon, Bill Seinckizwczlpqrszcpt... etc. Do I think they're bad for the industry? Absolutely. Will I buy them if I think they're cool? Sure.

Saddened to hear about Maya Angelou passing. Here is one of her more off-beat projects, which I still love a lot:

Saddened to hear about Maya Angelou passing. I came here to say the same. As some of you know, she pretty much grew up in my extremely small hometown in the corner of SW Arkansas. She actually came from St. Louis, I believe, but many if not most of her formative years were spent in Stamps. Much of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, her first book, takes place in her grandmother's store over on the wrong side of the tracks (i.e. one of the town's two black sections) by the pond. I'm 32 years younger than she was, but her grandmother was still operating the store when I was in high school. The summer after my 9th-grade year, I & the guy (he was black & so lived in that part of town) I worked with as part of a jobs program for poor kids made several stops there for cokes & such. She was killed with a hammer a few years later during a robbery by the younger brother of another one of the guys we worked with that summer.

Sheesh. I read about that horrible act in her books. What a small planet! I need to look that one up. (Haven't read anything of hers other than Caged Bird, alas.) Not sure when the slaying happened, but it must've been in the late '70s, while I was in college the next county over. Thing is, his older brother, who I believe was one grade ahead of me, was this great guy everybody liked. The younger brother, though, always had one hellacious chip on his shoulder. Maybe he had good reason for being that way; I don't know. But still. (Urban -- or I guess rural -- legend had it that he did only a few months behind bars before being released in time to play tight end on the school's championship football team. I hope to god that's incorrect.)

I read the first four novels. Not sure if there is a fifth? Can't tell you in which book the slaying happened. She had such a moving life story. And I like what she told a reporter who implied she was embellishing by saying her stories were a bit "larger than life." Life, she said, life is larger than life.

I have Comic Book Collecting group on my facebook and its insane at some stories happening if true. One guy claims someone ripped up a copy of a Daredevil issue in front of him and his friend back in the 1980's. Due to the friend offering $1 dollar less than marked due to a crease in the corner.
I don't think I can top that in terms of assholish behavior from LCS people.

Um, hi, guys. I see I missed the big dramatic ... everything. Looks like a lot of pain and suffering was involved. Sorry for what went down--glad I found you after only a month had passed, actually. Glad to see you all. I'll have to fix that avatar once I'm off mobile... I look like Machine Man, not Polar Bear... EDIT: There, that's better.
