It's certainly not on the level of problems that many of you have been having recently, but I am beginning to get increasingly concerned about my inability to get an full night's sleep on a regular basis. I have no problem falling asleep when I lay down at night, but after that, it's anyone's guess as to how long I will stay asleep. On some nights, I only get three hours or so before I wake up and than I flop back and forth for the next few hours, never getting more than 20-30 minutes consecutively in that time. It's frustrating, because I know I'm tired and should be sleeping, but my body never seems to want to cooperate.
As such, it's 5:45 on Saturday morning and I've been up off and on for the past two hours, even though I was up until 11:45 last night (which is pretty late for my boring self). I'd love to get a nap later, but my girls have soccer games this afternoon at 12:30, 1:30, and 2:15 (the little one has a doubleheader), so it doesn't look like that nap is going to happen.

That used to plague me, Richard. Still does, to some extent, especially of late. (I shouldn't be up now, as I have been for an hour, but in this case cats are to blame. The same cats who, having hyperactively made sure I was awake an hour ago, are now snoozing soundly on the bed 6 feet from where I'm typing this.)
I'm too exhausted in so many ways right now to offer anything cogent, but I will as soon as I'm up to it.

In other news, the biggest news station in town sent a reporter out to interview me this afternoon. Story was supposed to air tonight, but get knocked off by genuine breaking news involving an 18-wheeler wreck on the interstate or some such. Which, I stress as a grizzled news industry (print, not TV, of course) veteran, was totally the right call.

Never in my life did I have a problem falling asleep. When I am stressed, I will wake up early like you have been doing. Maybe some issues that are creeping in your mind are causing you to do this.

I didn't sleep the night before last, and then worked 8 hours in the sun. Went home and took a 10 hour nap. Been up since 1am goofing around in the garage, probably pissing off my neighbors. Currently waiting for the sun to come up so I can go get breakfast.

I have this exact problem, too, so I do not have any advice. I will go to bed around 10 pm every single night. And my brain wakes me up anywhere from 3-4 am. It's usually to pee, but I can RARELY ever fall back asleep. My husband wakes up around 5:40 am during week days so he can get ready for work, so I usually get up around 5:30 so I can at least have my coffee ready before he wakes up. Every now and then, my body will crash, and I'll either fall asleep between 9 and 9:30 pm and sleep all the way until 5 pm, but most of the time, I am up on and off from 3-4-5 am. Sometimes, making sure I have nothing to eat 2-3 hours before bed helps, or if I do not drink anything 1-2 hours before bed. Daily exercise helps me sometimes as well, but it's never a guarantee. For me, my sleep patterns become especially crazy when approaching, and during, my period (sorry if TMI), which is extremely awful because it's during that time that my body needs the most rest. Lack of sleep causes me anxiety and forgetfulness, things I should not be experiencing right now in my life. So, while I have no advice, I can completely relate. I envy the hell out of people who can sleep 8-10 hours at a time, or people who can sleep past 7 am.

Sorry, but as a person gets older, they sleep less.

Speaking of (not) sleeping, I now hate cats. With a passion.
That is all.

I'm usually pretty good with 6-61/2 hours a night. Waking up at 3am happens but usually because my step son comes in from work at that time.

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I suffered for decades with chronic insomnia, from age 12 to about age 38. The problem only went away after my hypnotherapist (who I was seeing for unrelated issues) taught me a relaxation technique to use at bedtime. After a few months of using it faithfully, my sleep cycle reset itself to its current pattern. I still wake up four or five times a night but now it's no big deal to drift off again. I also had to accept that my body is not "programmed" for more than six hours of sleep a night. This means that if I go to sleep at 11 (like I did last night), I'm going to be wide awake at 5 (as I was this morning) so I plan bedtime accordingly. Of course, now that I'm in my late 50s, I do find it helpful to nap for an hour or two in mid- to late afternoon.
Cei-U! I summon the z's!
