Yes Dragonball Z has LOTS of filler, which is why I prefer the edited Z-Kai to watch. Moves much faster without out all the jumping around to other stuff that has little to nothing to do with the story. Filler is one of those things found in Anime you learn to accept/ignore or fast forward through. It has many things going for it, but Kai has a different sound track, which I can't live with. It was tough to decide which version to choose, because I prefer the original aspect ratio. More precisely, I prefer the video not to be cropped, I like the 16:9 ratio better. As for filler in general, as something you have to accept... I don't recall any in Monster or Erased.

The Dragonball series (especially Z) are SO filler... you really have to do something else while you're watching them. I've been re-watching Wolf's Rain with my teenagers (which has been fun) and some Robotech (Netflix has the rights atm)..it's like the silver age DC of anime. One thing that I didn't like about Kai was that it totally cut out a bunch of nuanced moments that, while not completely faithful to the source material, were welcomed slice of life pieces that I like to think that Toriyama would have approved of. Namely Goku's adventures in hell at the beginning of season 7 They also ditched the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack, which is a huge drokkin' no-no for me

I've been reading Monster (I'm about half way through).. man it it something. Definitely the best psychological thriller I've read. Is the anime version good? It seems like it could be difficult to translate into an anime.. not very much action.

Just got done with Defenders Of Space, this utterly bizarre South Korean Knock-Off anime feature. Really can't even say that I actually watched it, more or less had it on as background noise on my PS2 Fat. It's just that wonderfully generic and a total mash up of so many different concepts from half a dozen or so popular "Japanimation" programs of the time. The main ones, as near as I can figure, are Hi No Tori, Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, and Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamamoto

Finished the Trunks Saga, episode 125 it's a good cutting point but it makes for a very short chunk (just one hour). I think I'll expand it to episode 131.
Edit: done. Finishing the saga with Trunks' return is a better solution. It gets a boost in running time of 100%+, putting it on par with the following ones, and the AndroidS Saga has more thematic consistency with the title. Episodes 125-131 give the spotlight to Dr. Gero, more than anything else (and there's only one android to speak of, A19).

Finished watching Dragonaut: the Resonance complete series. Short synopsis: deadly asteroid hurtling towards earth and dragons arrive in destructive mode. Humans are bonded with sentient shape changing dragons (can be dragon or human) with super strength and powers in a struggle against time to save humanity from destruction. Eventually the asteroid is discovered to being the "mother" of dragons and Earth is saved through the shared bonds of love of a human and a dragon showing the "mother" Earth is deserving of living.
Soooo: quite stunning animation combined with CGI dragons which are very unique and different. Lots of fan service but without any explicit nudity. Gravity defying breasts. Good story showing love can overcome all and diversity in life and forms isn't a deal breaker for love. Very good voice dubbing with folks you will recognize. An overall interesting and fun series of 26 episodes you can breeze through without spending half your life watching it.

Started rewatching the English dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix recently as someone pointed out that it's on there and I don't remember actually finishing the entire series so thought this was a good opportunity to jump back in.

I watched most of of Evangelion... I have like 6 eps to go (was watching with my daughter while she was hope from college)... I remember weird bits and pieces of it went I watched it a while back (early Adult Swim I think).. man, is it weird. Great, but weird.
Right now I'm watching Overlord, which is OK.. the visuals are nice. It's somewhat fan service-y (though in a very PG way).. in many ways it reminds me of a modern verison of those 60s sci fi paperbacks I read alot... the adolescent power fantasy has just changed from being an Space Pirate/Explorer to Owning the world in a video game.

Weird is mandatory for any anime I have begun to believe. Seems no matter what series you watch, there is something decidedly off or strange to be found. A friend of mine came up with the idea that it must be derived from the radioactive atomic nightmares Japanese people have after our bombing Hiroshima. Myself, I just finished watching the 13 episodes of Black Bullet over the last few days. Cursed female children granted superhuman abilities teamed with an "adult" partner to protect and guide the girls as they fight monsters. Lots of harem style aspects along with the action in a semi post-apocalyptic world. Somewhat light plot wise and character wise but with nice animation and designs. Nothing overly exciting to write home about but fairly entertaining.

I see I missed the Giant Gorg DVD set... it lists now at $200-up. I would've just been happy to have seen it on a tv channel. Was there ever an Orguss NTSC/Region 1 release? Dirty Pair? Are they now extremely expensive to buy? The old Amazing Three/W3 seems to have had a region 2 release which I could play, but again $100 a disc? I guess I'm lucky I bought the first seasons of Marine Boy and Kimba back when those came out!

Yeah, you really have to maintain a watchful eye on Anime. I have had good Amazon Fu (as they call it) for some of the newer items and the occasional re-release. Quite s few of my older Anime comes from the local annual Comic-Con when the East coast video dealers come in with their "official bootleg" full collections recorded from Cable/Satellite/Internet stations. Picked up my Starblazers, Captain Harlock, Teknoman (AKA Tekkaman), several Gundam series and Dirty Pair that way.

I've been watching something called Grimgar, a fantasy series about young people who are thrown into a group together and have to figure out how to use their skills (healer, tank, thief, etc.), also they have no memory of previous life, which leads me to believe that the twist is that they are RPGers or something. Half dozen episodes in, it's not too bad but it's not grabbing me and making me want to watch avidly either. Anyone seen?

One of those that if I find on sale cheaply might pick it up. Nothing looks overly enticing from what little I have seen. Typical teen fantasy trope with mild fan service and nothing overly unique or new in the designs. That it is only 12 episodes means you can zip through it quickly enough as mild entertainment.

I don't buy too much anymore... I have the classics I want to own (Cowboy Bebop, FMA, Samurai 7, Trigun)... if I find stuff on sale I'll grab it, but between Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Crunchyroll, that's plenty to watch.
Caught up with My Hero Academia yesterday... such good character designs! My daughter's telling me I should watch Hunter x Hunter.... I kinda got tired of it after the first 40 episodes or so, but she loved it and blew through 140+ episodes.
They also have a really good adaptation of the first couple stories of Blade of the Immortal on Amazon Prime. It matches the art and tone of the series really well. (not for the faint of heart, though.. extremely graphic)
I feel like there's alot of RPG-ish animes out there right now... have heard of that one though.
I think next for me is going to be Dr. Stone
