I guess we would have to change the title to Classic Cover Contest and leave out the Comics part. Why? if it's the cover of a comic, it's a comic cover. If it's comic art on the cover of a comics fanzine, it's a comic cover. Just a slightly different meaning of the same words.

Then why stop at fanzines? Let's post any type of comic art including pin ups and splash pages. After all, it's all about nice art right ?

Yes they are not covers. And fanzines are not comics. I will abid by the final decision but I doubt I would ever vote for anything that's not An actual comic.

I voted 'no' because this could be a slippery slope. While we can more-or-less agree on whether something is a comic, if we let fanzines in, where do we draw the line? Are portfolios by comics artists allowed? Sketch books? Posters? I'd really rather just keep it to comics. I voted No for pretty much the same reason... but why can't there be a fanzine cover contest for those people that want to showcase fanzine covers instead? Two competitions a week isn't going to break the site surely? This makes the most sense! It seems a minor issue but this is the best solution.

Were Savage Sword of Conan or Marvel Preview comics? They were full of sequential art and word balloons but were definitely magazines, I'd say! So, can a magazine be a comic, but only if it contains no non comics material? Heavy Metal is a mix of both. Is it not a comic? Come to think of it, an awful lot of British comics are actually magazines, including much of the former output of Marvel UK, and the Judge Dredd Megazine, but I defy anyone to claim that they don't qualify as comics.

I classify a comic as being a a publication that has a story with sequential art. Fanzines are publications that have articles and critiques of publications that have stories with sequential art. Just because CBG hire Perez to do a cover doesn't make it a comic

And the magazines that you mentioned are comics in my mind. THe size doesn't disqualify if. I consider oversized tabloids comics too.

As the OP, let me clarify : Professional comic fanzines, like, but not limited to anything put out from the outstanding TwoMorrows, including The Jack Kirby Collector, Alter Ego, Back Issue and other pro-zines including Fantagraphics' The Comics Journal, Amazing Heroes and other from before 2007 like The Buyer's Guide for Comic Book Fandom, Comic Buyers Guide, Rocket's Blast Comic Collector (RBCC), The Comics Readers, Comic Times, Comics Interview, Comic Book Artist, Comics Scene, Marvel Age, Amazing World of DC Comics, Wizard, Comic Collector, etc. Most of the publications listed above are indexed at the GCD (https://www.comics.org/). Could we live with a rule that any publication that is in the GCD is eligible for the cover contest?

Those and other fanzines/ prozines are all comics related publications sold side-by-side in comic shops and comic conventions . Many of them had regularly scheduled comic pages within them, each and every issue. For examples: RBCC had Hembeck, Amazing Heroes and Comic Reader had regular reprints of newspaper strips like Star Wars, Superman and many more. Prozines like Star Reach, Quack, Witzend, the various Ditko issues were all wall-to-wall comics Heavens forbid if you behold something beautiful and new to your eyes
