The first episode is also about the only time (may have been one or two more; can't remember) that they bring up Bruce's tragic past.
For my money, the first season has some of the strongest stories (2nd has some good ones; but, 1st is more consistent). Loved Gorshin as the Riddler; but, any Burgess meredith episode was a treat and he makes the movie (apart from Lee Meriwether). Both Gorshin and Meredith really understood how to play this show (Julie Newmar, too), though Meredith usually got better lines.
Jill St John is smoking sexy in this era and these episodes and yeah, anyone who thinks Robin's bod looks like that needs their eyes checked.
Oh, the window thing was more of a second season and beyond thing, as it was a way to get more celebrities on the show, after it became hugely popular. Col. Klink was probably the goofiest, considering that Hogan's Heroes was set 20 years before. You really need them making a joke about Klink hiding from the MOSSAD, or something (which is ironic, since Werner Klemperer played Adolf Eichmann, in Operation Eichmann).

If I remember correctly, it was Robin who solved most (if not all) of The Riddler's riddles. It might have seemed logical for a kid to get the answer to "There are three men in a boat with four cigarettes and no matches - how do they manage to smoke?" but to see Batman with that befuddled, desperate look on his face as he turns to Robin for the answer ("They threw one cigarette overboard and made it a cigarette lighter") is rather odd given how all knowing Batman would become as the series continued. Not a huge deal of course, but it is indicative of how this premiere episode played it a little more serious than, well, all the others. As already mentioned, Bruce Wayne bringing up the murder of his parents, one of the villains actually dying (the only other time I recall anyone dying was in the film), even Batman's sombre "Let's go up and ask him" response to Robin's "What do you think The Riddler means, Batman?" are little touches you wouldn't really expect to find in a lampoon. Speaking of little touches, Adam West put a lot of thought into how to play Batman - so much so that he timed the line "we haven't a leg to stand on" when discussing his legal chances of going to court against The Riddler to occur at the precise moment at which he stood up from a seated position. That he pored over the script so he could insert minute details such as this into his performance tells you how seriously West took his performance.
Oh and one other thing - though it's not an exact recreation, this two-parter was somewhat based on Batman 171's "The Remarkable Ruse of The Riddler" which marked the first appearance of Edward Nigma in 18 years and his third appearance over all. Had Gorshin not done such a superb job with The Riddler, who knows if the character wouldn't have been dispatched back to limbo in the comics shortly thereafter. As it is, he made about eight other appearances in the comics before the decade was out.

Batman Episode (1) … First Season – Fine Feathered FinksOriginal Air Date - January 19, 1966 Major Villain - The Penguin, played by Burgess Meredith Important Guest Stars - David Lewis as Warden Crichton Window Cameos - None Favorite Holy Word Spoken by Robin - None Critique of the Show (My Thoughts)
I just watched this show this morning and I thought it was a brilliant well laid scheme by the Penguin of which he mapped out a plan to commit of a crime by doing nothing. That's right - Nothing. He's letting Batman, to do all the work and having said that I thought it was a very clever way of doing it. This show was a masterpiece of masterpiece of which made his henchmen to do exactly what he wanted them to do and making Batman trying to figure out what's going on. I like the opening scene of free prizes with the winner holding a lucky umbrella and the store owner ... yelling "Police" multiple times. I like the scene of the giant umbrella with the pretty umbrella on top of it and that's was the most significant clue of this caper that will reveal in our next show. That's later folks. In order for Batman, to figure out what in the world is going on around here and having said that. While in the Batcave, Batman and Robin came to the conclusion that they need to plant a bug (a spider) to figure out Penguin's Plans are. Unfortunately, as soon Bruce Wayne placed the bug on the lamp of the shop (K.G. Bird, Umbrella ... etc) an alarm sounded off and he was netted for good and placed on a conveyor belt to be fed into a furnace that's 10,000 degree of which they make parts of a rib. BatsSolid Show from start to finish!

Batman Episode (1) … First Season – The Penguin's a JinxOriginal Air Date - January 20, 1966 Major Villain - The Penguin, played by Burgess Meredith Important Guest Stars - Leslie Parrish as Dawn Robbins, Movie Starlet, Dan Tobin, as Mr Jay, Robbins Manager. I own this photograph - part of my Batman's Collection ... Window Cameos - None Favorite Holy Word Spoken by Robin - He spoke two Holy Words in this show, Holy Popcorn and Holy Flypaper both had significant in this show especially - the Flypaper one because the Penguin uses a giant magnet to trap the Dynamic Duo in the Penthouse that being used by Dawn Robbins the Movie Starlet. Critique of the Show (My Thoughts)Another stellar show after Bruce (Batman) Wayne tossed the lighter in the furnace and raced home to beat the 6' o'clock deadline of which it rather a moot point of this show and I didn't think it was all that important but to the producers it was. The critical part of this show was the money being delivered to Wayne Manor because Chief O'Hara spoke to the Butler and told Commissioner Gordon, Batman, Robin, and everyone else in attendance including Dan Tobin who played Mr. Jay to trying to get back Dawn Robbins the Movie Star safe and sound. So, Batman, remembered in the Society Pages of Gotham City Times that Bruce Wayne has two suits of Armor (Knights) in one of the rooms in Stately Wayne Manor to trap the Penguin and his Fine Feathered Finks. Prior to that, they already deduced the Penguin plans because they figured out the caper of the whole incident and they wanted to use it against the Penguin. So, the Penguin gases the dummies that were placed there and took the dough and head of to his hideaway in Alaska to live off his spoils of crime. Then, a great Bat Fight, and before the Bat Fight began ... Batman revealed the caper to the Penguin and told him that they were ready to pounce on them in the K.G. Bird Shoppe that was used in this Brilliant Caper that was unfolded by Batman. At end of the show, Mr. Jay ... Played by Dan Tobin escorted Dawn Robbins to Wayne Manor to be part of the gala party that was being put on by Mr. Wayne and she wasn't impressed by him. She was thinking about her unknown Suitor - Batman, and was hopelessly in love with him. Anyway, the coolest part of this show ... Was Commissioner Gordon telling the partygoers the Origin of the Bat Costume and I just loved the ending ... what strikes fear in the heart of criminals is the shape and the shadows of a Giant Bat ... that's was really a great way to end it. Bats

As I said above...Burgess Meredith as the Penguin was my favorite villain on the show. And I forget what beautiful women they had on this show like Leslie Parrish! I love the colors & the 60's fashions. This was the first show I got to watch in color (at my grandparents house). We had B&W TV until 1973. Then I got to see Star Trek & a lot of other shows in color in reruns.

After my parents divorced, I would spend weekends with my dad and some of the best memories of our time together was spent watching episodes of Batman '66. Totally digging these reviews, they bring a smile to my face.

Batman Episode (1) … First Season – The Joker is WildOriginal Air Date - January 26, 1966 Major Villain - Cesar Romero as the Joker Important Guest Stars - Nancy Kovack as Queenie With the Joker here ... Window Cameos - None Favorite Holy Word Spoken by Robin - I don't have one, Sorry Members Critique of the Show (My Thoughts)For this alone, this show had a blueprint of this show is based on Batman #73 ... see Comic Book Below. It's all open up with the Joker playing Softball in Prison with Chief O'Hara and the Assistant Warden of the Prison played by Merritt Bohn ... see You Tube Below I find this opening sequence on the best of the best because it was done in a very dramatic fashion of Joker escaping from the Prison in style that's befitting to the Clown Prince of Crime. He's assembled his cohorts of crime based on the best comedians of all time ... Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, WC Fields and others and the plot of this caper was very excellent and he's plot his moves like clockwork that's the beauty of this show that was done in a very fast paced that's doesn't bored you one bit. Before this scene ... there was a cute scene of pretty girls getting all work up seeing Robin, The Boy Wonder ... I just wanted to mention that and I find it funny as a youth and kind of enjoyed it as an Adult. Then, later on after a brief Bat Fight in the Museum and Batman, being knocked out by a Falling Sword and the Joker and his henchmen captured the Dynamic Duo and without warning - Batman escaped using a Bat Gas device from his Utility Belt and the Joker was mad being defeated and blasted Batman for using this unconstitutional device of his and started creating his own Utility Belt and started his own wave of Crime that made Batman a laughing stock and losing confidence as a Crime Fighter. Anyway, the Program ended with a real cliffhanger and I considered it one of the best of the best. At Commissioner Gordon's office .... one of the Joker's henchmen threw a doll into the office breaking glass and the Commissioner called Batman and found out that he wasn't at home and Bruce Wayne took the doll back to Wayne Manor via Batcave while the Dynamic Duo figured out that the Joker will be at Gotham City Opera House to settle for the final showdown with the Dynamic Duo. The ending was pure Joker! Joker as Pagliacci in Gotham City Opera House. BatsIt was a great show and I had fun watching last night so that I can write this up for today.

Like I said, Season 1 was gold. They used several actual Batman stories, mostly from Bill Finger, in the earlier episodes, which gives them a decent level of mystery and adventure, upon which to pin the satire. That's what made the show work for me; as a kid, you can enjoy the adventure, as an adult, the satire.

Holy Words spoken by Robin, the Boy Wonder ...
Being Hard of Hearing and having said that, I decided not to include that in my reviews because I have to pay real attention to those words and that's makes it very impossible to get a fair and honest reviews. Sorry Everyone!
The next review will be finished by Saturday, a day earlier ... I'll be gone most of the day on Sunday, with friends.
