Good News Batfans!md62 , brutalis , @strider , codystarbuck , Confessor , chadwilliam , and hondobrode - I'll resume this thread starting Monday and I'll be able to provide reviews until Labor Day, after Labor Day ... I'll be heading to Disneyland with my girlfriend, her parents, and the rest of my girlfriend family for a week vacation. After that vacation, I'll be absence from this forum in the 1st week of October to assist my nephew move to my brother old home that will take a week to have them move in. I'll begin with Zelda the Great starring Anne Baxter. Sorry about tagging all of the members here that responded this thread. Don't do it, don't give in to The Rat! You'll never leave Disneyland with your wallet! When I was going through one of my summer midshipman training periods, we were in San Diego for 4 weeks. On one weekend, they sent us to Disneyland, for a break. The Marine gunnery sergeant in charge of our barracks said, "You're all going to see The Rat and his b@#$%!" Just remember to talk like Robert Newton when you go through The Pirates of the Caribbean. |

In the RIP Thread - I was stunned by the death of Adam West and I just learned that he died of leukemia. I met Adam four times in my life and he was one of nicest guys around and loves his fans on his Batman Show. I had fond memories talking to him and met him in Idaho once and spent half the afternoon learning about his experiences on that show with fans wanting to hear about it.  With Jill St. John his first major guest on his Show.

About Adam West's passing due to leukemia:
A co-worker told me a few months ago that her husband's brother died from leukemia during the TV series run (he was six). A few months prior to this however, Adam West came to our city of Winnipeg and met the boy. It may have been this child's happiest day of his life and it really impressed me that West took the time to give him such a moment (he even drove to his home in the Batmobile).
My own story: I was 10 years old in 1989 when the first Keaton Batman film came out. I was already a huge Batman fan and that coupled with the fact that it was also the Caped Crusader's 50th anniversary and that tripled with the fact that, as I said, I was a 10 year old kid - meant that Batman was all I had on my mind that summer. So anyway, my family went to Edmonton that year and stopped by the Collosseum where I spotted a huge MEET ADAM WEST sign. I went nuts, couldn't believe my luck, and my dad made inquiries. "Sorry, but that sign's from yesterday". uuuughhhhhh. I did get to see the car JFK was assassinated in however.
About five years ago however, Adam West came to Winnipeg for the Manitoba Comic Con. Here's the thing though - if I have to pay for an autograph, it doesn't matter how much I love, respect, adore, that celebrity, I just can't reconcile the idea that this meeting could be both a business transaction and magical experience simultaneously. It just seems cold to me. So I told my girlfriend that under these circumstances, I'd pass on meeting him. Besides, what could I really say when there's such a line behind me anyway? So, I had bought my comics for the day, told my girlfriend that I was ready to leave but was willing to wait around if she still had stuff to see. "Why don't you go home and I'll stick around? I'll call you later." "OK sure thing." I get home and the phone rings. It's my girlfriend. "You'd better get down here since I bought you Adam West's autograph and I want you to thank him". I honestly wasn't hinting that this was what I wanted, but in hindsight, who knows? So I come back, stand in line, and get to Mr. West. I tell him my girlfriend got me his autograph but I wanted to thank him personally. "I can't think of anything to say that you haven't heard thousands of times from a million different people, but I can't think of any reason not to thank you for how happy you made me as a child and still do". Though up until then he had been seated, Adam West rose and beamed "Thank YOU!" and shook my hand. So glad I stopped by to see him. |

Batman Episode (1) … First Season – Zelda the Great With Jack Kruschen here. Original Air Date - February 9, 1966 Major Villain - The first villainess, Anne Baxter as Zelda the Great Important Guest StarsJack Kruschen as Eivol Ekdal, her partner in crime Barbara Heller as Hilary Stonewin Frankie Darro as the Newsman, with papers Stephen Tompkins as the Bank Guard Window Cameos - None Critique of the Show (My Thoughts)
It's all started a bank robbery at a local bank at 8:37 sharp of where a bandit broke into the vault and stole exactly $100,000 from it and a guard by an actor of Stephen Tompkins took one shot and got knocked out by the bag that the bandit was carrying. Later on, at Commissioner Gordon office and they were all stumped by this string of robberies exactly occurred on April 1st and they come up empty without a clue. The Bank Association is getting uneasy and they want this to be stopped at all costs. So, without hesitation, they called on the Dynamic Duo for help and the Batphone was left unattended and the reason for that both Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson were out stargazing and they enjoyed this experience while they can. Then, Aunt Harriet came in and told both Bruce and Dick that dinner is served and she noticed the Bat-Signal in one of the clouds and said to herself - I hope that unknown Batman see his signal. So, they raced to Commissioner Gordon's Office and everything seems to hit a blank wall, and Batman took the bullet back to the Batcave for further analysis. Meanwhile, at Commissioner Gordon's office ... Batman planted a lead to inform the money in the Bank is Counterfeit and the part in the program of Frankie Darro is one of my favorite part in the program of where he was holding up this newspaper from Gotham City Times.  So, Batman planted a lead and the Crook heads to Stonewin Gallery and I loved the part of Barbara Heller as Hilary Stonewin the owner admiring Batman and often read about him in the newspaper. After waiting for 2 hours, Zelda strikes and vanishes at the same time after Batman pounces on her and that's didn't do the trick and the Dynamic Duo failed on capturing the tricky villainess that proves that this villainess is a worthy adversary for Batman.  Loved this Scene Here. At the end, She pulls a Kidnap because she had a better idea in mind, Kidnap Aunt Harriet and the rest was history for the climaxed cliffhanger of Aunt Harriet suspended in mid-air over a giant pot of fire. That's one dire climax for the Dynamic Duo.  Before, I close ... I wanted to share this to all of you of how Batman figured out it was a woman pulling off the bank job at 8:37 and there were not a clue for the entire Gotham City Police force can figure it out. Batman, took the bullet and discovered that it went thru Nylon Coveralls, an Orange Dress, and up to 13 brightly colored silks (Zelda's Handkerchiefs), and came away deducing that a criminal was a lady, and hardly is one; and one other thing that it's contains a trace of ambergris a product that manufactures uses to make perfume. I just wanted to share this at the end. I consider this moment a critical moment of time for this show. Bats The reason for this show is getting 5 Bats because it had a great pace, good action, and lots of suspense and drama that went into it. Anne Baxter was brilliant as Zelda the Great. 2nd part of this show will be in tomorrow.

Frankie Darro was a child star, actor, stuntman, and voice artist. He co-starred with Gene Autry in the awesome movie serial, The Phantom Empire, leading the Junior Thunder Riders (the kids with buckets on their heads!) and also voiced Lampwick, in Pinocchio. Hw starred in his own series of films at Monogram.

Robin the Boy Wonder was there and he reassured both Gordon and O'Hara that Batman will find Bruce Wayne. At the Television Station, all sorts of events took place and it was pretty dramatic that I can say it.  Somehow, Zelda the Great was watching an old western movie and the station was interrupted by an Announcer being played by Jerry Doggett and he made an apologies that this movie is being cut off and at the Station, Bruce Wayne, Commissioner Gordon, and Robin the Boy Wonder appeared.   This scene is the best scene of the whole program of Zelda keeps getting interrupted and the whole thing about the counterfeit monies is a lure to trap Zelda was totally untrue. Robin made a dramatic confession and spoke o the behalf of Batman that he wanted Zelda to capture the fabulous emerald in the previous program and the $100,000 that she collected wasn't counterfeit at all. The Gotham City Times Editor notarized a piece of document indicating that and Bruce Wayne reassured her that the monies in her hands is one hundred percent real. So, Zelda releases her and the Newsman was very surprised to see Aunt Harriet that was finally release and and she ask someone to call police.  While she was home, an important clue appeared and it was a book of matches indicating Grome Bookstore and Aunt Harriet was billed in good health and the Dynamic Duo headed to Grome Bookstore to stop Zelda the Great. Upon reaching to their destination and a series of fast moving scenes and Zelda saved the Dynamic Duo and captured Eivol Ekdal with his trusty batarang. Then, later at Prison Bruce Wayne reassured Zelda a job working at a Local Hospital as a Resident Magician. She gave him a rose for Batman of which Bruce Wayne gladly accepts it. BatsThe reason for getting 3 Bats ... I was disappointed in Batman Producers that this is the final appearance of Zelda the Great for Anne Baxter and she went on to Play Olga the Queen of the Cossack later on and that's puts a real bummer for me. I liked Anne Baxter as Zelda more that phoney Queen later on. Two Reviews in One Day ... playing catch up! 10 shows down and 110 to go!

Batman was at a great crossroads in time allowing many of the aging movie stars who were now having their movies shown on television being recognizable to the vast majority. A show like Batman gave many of them another opportunity for their star to shine brightly and provide new exposure. There was a grand mix of classic movie stars and new stars in the Bat villainy every week. Great fun then and great fun now that we can all enjoy. And i personally adored watching Ann Baxter and Vincent Price working together trying to pull one over on Batman and Robin!

@mechagodzilla great reviews. That is one beautiful picture of Anne Baxter in her youth. Man you must spend a lot of time on these reviews.
I'm curious about one thing...you seem to like the set up of the first part more than the conclusion of the second part. Do you think that is true?

The problem with the 2nd part is that villainess Zelda the Great made it too easy by putting a book of matches that Alfred found and hand it to Bruce so that they can eventually capture Zelda. The Gangsters paying $100,000 to Eivol EkdaL was confusing and doesn't make any sense to me and the sudden remorse of Zelda saving the Caped Crusaders of which I felt it was odd too. It was these two events that made this show a downer in my book and that's why I liked the 1st part better than the 2nd part. |
