Episode 9: "In the Kingdom of the Blind" Guest stars: Ian Ogilvy (Return of the Saint, Ripping Yarns) Synopsis: Garibaldi briefs Sheridan about unknown attacks on Alliance shipping, all in border regions. Meanwhile, Byron's people are following the alien ambassadors around the station. Londo and G'Kar arrive on Centauri Prime and the Royal Court is scandalized. Byron speaks to Garibaldi about addressing the council and he wants to know why. Byron doesn't want to reveal his hand, so he pulls info out of Garibaldi's mind, about the shipping attacks. He says he has information and Garibaldi agrees. At the meeting, he unveils the bomb: his people have been scanning the ambassadors for their secrets. They want a border world for a homeland or they will reveal all. Needless to say, everyone needs a change of underwear. Later, a group of Drazi attack one of the telepaths and beat him into a pulp. That sets off a faction to react violently, despite Byron's desires. Byron has lost control of his people and the pacifists seal themselves off, while the zealots attack. Meanwhile, Londo meets with old friend Lord Jano. He briefs Londo and speaks of anomalies in grain figures and ship movements. He tried poking his nose into it and got warned off. Londo says he will check into it. The Regent is unseen and there are stories of odd behavior, talking to himself, drunkenness (he cultivated sobriety, previously), and such. Lord Jano returns to his quarters and finds the Regent, who says "they" didn't like what he said and Jano is attacked by unseen forces. Londo is woken in the night to see the Regent. As he and G'Kar pass through corridors, they are attacked and G'Kar is separated from Londo by a descending door. A knife is thrown at Londo; but, an alien presence halts it in midflight and repels it back to the attacker, killing him. It then disappears. Londo does meet up with the Regent, who says "they" like Londo and some other creepy things. Londo decides to get out of Dodge. Somewhat uneven episode. The telepath plot mirrors some of the history of the birth of the modern state of Israel, with the demands for a Jewish homeland and battles with the british government by paramilitary groups, in Palestine. You have peaceful factions and "zealots" who will never again act passively. It ends up being a bit clumsy and Byron still comes across more like a cult leader than a messiah, though that is a fine line under any definition. The Centauri stuff is intriguing and we know it is tied to the attacks, as we have seen Centauri ships involved. Is the Regent as mad as Cartagia or is he under control? Well, we have seen his keeper, so we know what's up; but, Londo doesn't, yet. This is the carryover from the Shadow War. It is more contained and centered, less epic. Watching things so far, this season, the quality of acting is all over the place. There are really great performances by guest stars and the cast is solid to amazing. However, there is a lot of "soap opera" acting going on in this season, though it has always been there, to some extent. The show had a small budget, so they used it well with guest stars; but, supporting characters could be a real mixed bag.

Episode 10: "A Tragedy of Telepaths" Guest stars: Julie Caitlin Brown is back as Na'Toth!!! Synopsis: The telepaths have welded shut all doors and transport tubes into their sector. Security is trying to burn through; but, the Teeps are planting suggestions into the workers' minds, images of bombs and other danger. They are making little progress. Lochley decides to contact bester, as they are in over their heads. He and his people are able to block the suggestion, to a point, and work resumes. Upon seeing the bloodhounds, the zealot faction reacts and grabs weapons. Byron contacts Lochley to warn her. She crawls through vents and ducts to reach Byron and talk to him. Security and the Psi Cops try to subdue the zealots, but Bester's people escalate the situation at every turn. On Centauri Prime, Londo and G'Kar are getting ready to leave, when they make a discovery. Na'Toth is alive and a prisoner beneath the palace. G'Kar is outraged and Londo is confused. He knew nothing of her. G'Kar demands her release; but, Londo informs him that a command of the Emperor cannot and will not be broken by the Centauri. The conspire another way. Londo convinces a Centauri courtier to give up her clothes (she thinks he's a cross-dresser) and they disguise Na'Toth and lead her out, under a veil, with Londo acting drink and obnoxious, to make the Court uncomfortable and to leave them alone. They succeed in getting her out and they head back to B5. At a council sesion, the Drazi accuse the Brakiri of attacks and the Gaim present evidence of the Drazi. Sheridan points out it is an obvious trick to divide the alliance. The usual arguing and accusations continue and no one listens to Sheridan and Delenn. They realize they have to expose the real atacker quickly and neutralize them, or the Alliance with pull itself apart, before it really even begins. It's nice to see Julie Caitlin Brown back and she reminds us how good Na'Toth was, as a character. The telepath situation has grown into full chaos and Bester is escalating things. The Alliance is still fighting amongst themselves. Lots of things going on; but, it feels like the episode is marking time a bit. We do sense the telepath plot is about to reach its climax, though the Centauri plot and the attacks will finish out the season.

Episode 11: "Phoenix Rising" Guest stars: Walter Koenig as Bester Synopsis: The telepath standoff continues. Bester returns to his quarters and finds Garibaldi waiting for him, armed with a PPG. He tells him to record a confession or he will blow his brains out. Bester toys with him and refuses. Garibaldi takes aim, but can't fire. Bester laughs and asks Garibaldi how stupid he thinks Bester is? He planted an "Asimov"; he used the 3 Laws of Robotics to create a block which prevents Garibaldi from harming him or allow harm to come to him via inaction. Garibaldi shoots the recorder in frustration. Later, he goes to Medlab to consult with Stephen about medical ways to break a psychic block. Their conversation is interrupted by the zealots, who are on the run, after a firefight. The take over Medlab and hold the people as hostages, demanding a homeworld. Byron reveals to Lyta why he won't use force. He was a Psi Cop, Bester's protege. he followed orders to destroy a ship full of mundanes (as they call them). After that, he broke with the Corps and swore off violence. Sheridan announces they will not negotiate with terrorists and the zealots prepare to kill Garibaldi, as seen in "Deconstruction of Falling Stars." Byron and Lyta arrive and Byron shoots the zealot leader. He then turns himself into Psu Corps, on condition that the zealots are arrested, but the others be allowed to leave B5. Sheridan agrees, but Bester protests. He tries to interrupt the departure of the telepaths and violence ensues. A fuel connection is broken and starts flooding the bay with flammable liquid. Byron gets Lyta to safety, then ignites the fuel, taking himself and a small band of his people with him. Bester is shocked, thinking he could make Byron see his side. Later, there are reports of a bombing, on Mars, of the Psi Corps headquarters, with the message "Remember Byron." The last of the telepaths departs and Lyta sees them off, with info about contacts and safehouses, and the words "Remember Byron." The episode ends with Franklin talking about Garibaldi's emotional state and we then see Garibaldi return to his quarters with groceries. he puts away a few things, then pulls out a bottle of whiskey and pours a drink. He downs it in a gulp and savors it. The telepath struggle ends in fire, as was likely, much as Bester predicted. However, bester is as much responsible in pushing the situation to that point. It's a great Bester episode, as we see his evil side and we see that he truly thought he could bring Byron back into the fold. Bester believes in his cause, much as Magneto does in his: that his people are the superior and they must do what is necessary to ensure their survival. Byron is haunted by his past and has sought to atone, but, he can't escape it. Garibaldi has fallen off the wagon in a big way. The helplessness created by Bester's mind blocks strips away any desire to stay sober. Garibaldi's alcoholism will affect many things in the next few episodes. Help will come from an unlikely source.

Episode 12: "The Ragged Edge" Guest stars: John Castellanos (K-9, Young & The Restless) as Tafiq Aziz, Marshall Teague as Ta'Lon Synopsis: Londo and G'Kar return to B5 and notice a lot of Narns watching G'Kar and reacting more reverently than in past. G'Kar slowly makes his way to his quarters, as more and more Narns offer him greetings. He runs into Ta'Lon at his quarters. he has been off helping to guard ships from attacks. He tells G'Kar that when the Kha'Ri ordered his manuscript be preserved and copies were made. And then more copies, then full-scale printings. It has spread across his people, in the hundreds of thousands. The Narns are reacting to the revelations and G'Kar is now seen as a religious leader, much to his dismay. Narns set vigil outside his quarters, until Ta'Lon finally convinces G'Kar to speak to them and teach them about what he has seen and learned, rather than let them misinterpret it. He finally gives in. Meanwhile, Garibaldi misses a meeting, as he was passed out drunk. he makes the next one and briefs the group about a survivor of an attack on a ship. he has a contact on the Drazi homeworld that can lead him to him, to get evidence of who is behind the attacks. he insists he must go alone. Sheridan is forced to agree and Garibaldi departs. He meets up with an old friend, Tafiq Aziz, who is an advisor to the Drazi government, on security matters. They spend a night drinking and reminiscing and Garibaldi passes out again. He is asleep when Tafiq is attacked and murdered. Drazi police show up and Garibaldi awakes and runs off. he is attacked by cloaked figures and snags a button off a uniform. He is barely able to escape, after finding the survivor dead. Back on B5, he makes excuses for being asleep when Tafiq was attacked. He shows the button, but no one knows what it is. Londo arrives late and recognizes the button as that of a guard of the Imperial Palace. The rest keep stum and decide that trusting Londo is dangerous, even if he is ignorant of what is going on. G'Kar relates the attack on them and suggests that something is going on with the Regent and Londo's political enemies. Franklin receives an offer to head Xenobiology at Earthdome, taking over for the retiring ben Kyle. he informs Sheridan and Delenn that he has accepted, though he will still be able to work with the Alliance to share medical knowledge, even moreso, with the greater resources. They reluctantly wish him well. Now we are getting back to the point. The attacks are now front and center and the Alliance is on the hunt. Unfortunately, their hunter is descending into an alcoholic abyss. Garibldi is blacking out from his drinking and messing up his job. At first, he just misses a meeting. Later, he is passed out and a friend is murdered as a consequence. He misses out on getting his witness and is nearly killed. Things have quickly progressed to a full-scale calamity. Franklin is leaving, setting up the first of our future departures. He will take over in the new year, so we know he will stick around for a few more episodes; but, his story is essentially done. The Alliance now knows the Centauri are involved in the attacks, but aren't sure under whose orders. They can't trust Londo, as they don't quite know where his loyalties lay. G'Kar seems to think it is the Regent or Londo's enemies, seeking to undermine the Alliance for their gain. The others seem less convinced.

Episode 13: "The Corps is Mother, the Corps is Father" Guest stars: Walter Koenig as Bester, Mike Genovese (The Flash) as Drake, Dana Barron (NL Vacation) as Lauren Ashley, Reggie Lee (Grimm, Dark Knight Rises)as Chen Hikaru, Dex Elliott Sanders (Strange Days, Last Action Hero)as Jonathan Harris Note: The entire episode is told from the point of view of Bester and the Psi Corps. The opening titles are tweaked with this iamge: Synopsis: On Mars, at the Psi Corps HQ, Alfred bester is introduced to two new young interns: Lauren Ashley and Chen Hikaru. Both are in awe of Bester, who is a hero of the Psi Cops and the Corps. Lauren is especially taken by him. We see an experiment turn violent and a telepath murders his experiment partner. He runs off and is later seen on babylon 5. Bester's boss, Drake, gives him the investigation and he takes the interns with him. They see human prejudice against telepaths in the treatment of Bester, by Zack. Bester shares a telepathic joke with Lauren and she giggles, prompting Zack to ask what he said. Zack reluctantly briefs Bester about a murder that seems related to his quarry. Previously, we see the telepath attacked by a hood and destroy him mentally. Bester goes to look around and Chen violates orders and hacks his way into Harris' room, finding another body. At Medlab, Dr Fraknlin finds that his brain was fried from the inside out. In talking to the telepaths, he displays no prejudice, but, his words are misinterpreted and he is belittled by bester when he suggests that maybe the Corps misidentified Harris' Psi level as only P-10, since P-12 level was needed to do what he did. Bester's insult changes Franklin's friendly tone. bester has a theory but needs more evidence. he tasks Chen to search gambling areas for Harris, but not to get close or try to take him in. Chen spots him and goes to call Bester, but gets knifed before his message can be sent. Zack shows Bester the footage from the recorder, saying they are trying to ID the tattoo on the attacker's hand. bester and Lauren examine Harris' papers and the footage of the murder at the Psi Corps experiment. Bester finally figures it out; Harris has multiple personality disorder and his other personality has a stronger Psi ability. It is rare but not unknown. They track him down and are able to arrest him, removing him and his human accomplice (the man who knifed Chen) for trial. On the way back to the Corps mothership, Lauren disposes of the mundane, by dumping him out an airlock. Probably the best episode, so far, of the season. The idea of presenting the story from the Psi Corps point of view follows on the last issue of the DC comic series, which was done from the Psi Corps point of view. here, we see Bester as the traditional heroic detective, out to stop a murderer, with two young trainees. His man is dangerous and Bester encounters prejudice and half-hearted aid from authorities, like he is a minority cop. However, there are plenty of hints along the way that things aren't quite what they seem. At the Psi Corps facilities, we see placards with propaganda slogans, like "Trust the Corps," and "The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father" It brings to mind Nazi and Soviet propaganda posters, Big Brother propaganda, and the placards around the Village, in The Prisoner. We also see the rough footage of a Psi Corps propaganda piece about a rogue who is reformed and grateful to the Corps for saving him. Given the recent episode with byron, this seems like counter-programming. It's interesting to see a different point of view to the hostility of Zack and Franklin to bester. Chen is basically cannon fodder and is shown to be impulsive, which gets him killed. Lauren worships Bester and even makes a bumbling attempt at seduction, which he kindly rebuffs. She seems like an innocent, until the end, when she asks to handle the mundane. Bester is prepared to spare her this, but she insists. She murders the human, dumping him out the airlock. We see that she is truly a product of Psi Corps programming and a staunch ally of Bester. She suggests a sinister future. It is made even more sinister when you recognize Dana Barron as Audrey Griswold, from National Lampoon's Vacation. The name Jonathan harris is not an homage to the actor from Lost in Space. There was a raffle, with the winner getting their name inserted into an episode. The winner was named Jonathan hHarris, in a complete coincidence. Chen's surname, Hikaru, is also the given name of Lt Sulu, on Star Trek, colleague of Walter Koenig's Chekov. That might have been deliberate. The episode plays like a mystery and does so well, as JMS was a writer and producer on Murder She Wrote and was story editor on Jake and the Fat Man. This is the last appearance of Bester. A planned appearance in Crusade was never filmed, due to cancellation. bester's story and the Telepath War was held as a possible B5 movie plot, though it finally played out in the Psi Corps trilogy of books, which follows Bester through his career, from a child, to the Telepath War. From here on, it is all about the mysterious forces behind the Centauri attacks on Alliance shipping.

Episode 14: "Meditations on the Abyss" Guest stars: Richard Yniguez (Deadly Tower, Police Story, Zorro) as Montoya, Martin East (Titanic, Eastenders) as Findell Synopsis: Franklin fits G'Kar with his new prosthetic and cosmetically correct eye. He discusses G'Kar's books and asks to sit in on one of his discussions with the Narns. At the discussion, the group seems to miss what G'Kar is saying as they expect him to have the ultimate answers, while he speaks of "truth" more often being a reflection of the search, that people find their own truths. Finally, in exasperation he gives an ambiguous metaphor and the Narns seem happy. Franklin chuckles and G'Kar shakes his head. Vir comes back from shopping with an armload of goods. Londo is working, but something sets off a listening device detector. He traces it to one of Vir's packages, bought from a Drazi merchant. They feed some paranoia to it, before smashing it. He tells Vir that he will be the new Ambassador to B5, but, he isn't quite ready. Vir goes off to find the Drazi merchant and confronts him. The guy blows him off as a weakling and shives him. Vir comes back and grabs one of Londo's swords. Don't F#$% with Vir! Quite a change... Delenn meets secretly with Lennier and tasks him to look for evidence of the Centauri involvement in the attacks on Alliance shipping. He goes out on a training cruise with White Star 27, the Maria commanded by the human, Montoya. Vir is paired up with another Minbari, Findell, on a training exercise. They go out in fighters to scout, then they notice their atmosphere has dropped to 15%. The ship jumps out, leaving them alone and in danger. Lennier suggests going into a meditative state to conserve oxygen. Findell is afraid and has trouble. lennier offers calming advice; but, Findell later panics. Just then, the Maria reappears ad ends the exercise. Montoya praises Lennier and critiques Findell. A later exercise sees them and two others compete to knockout homing beacons, in an asteroid field. There are 39 and each must remove 10 or fail, so someone will fail. Lennier is ahead of the game when Findell, who thinks he will lose, takes manual control of his ship and aims it at an asteroid. Lennier calls for him to stop then goes after him. He fires his weapons at the engines, then uses his ship to nudge Findell's out of the path. Montoya halts the exercise and dresses down Lennier for endangering his comrade. He then angrily tells Findell that he is to be reassigned to a Ranger recruiting depot to screen candidates, to ask them why they want to be a Ranger and weed out anyone who can't commit fullly and may just be doing it for the wrong reasons, as Findell did (because of two family members who were Rangers, who were killed). He then praises lennier off the record. Later, they get a report of an attack and Lennier jumps ship, in a fighter and goes to investigate. He finds a Centauri warship and latches on, following it to it's base. Sheridan and the command staff enjoy dinner and laugh at the story of Vir's fight. They then notice Garibaldi's absence and we see him lying on the floor of his quarters, drunk. Interesting episode for a peak into Ranger training, which gives lennier some nice focus. Vir's scenes are played for comedy and are fun. G'Kar's episode demonstrates how the worship of him has grown to become almost intolerable. The followers don't want to listen to him, just have him bless their interpretations of his writing.

He disengages from the ship he is trailing and heads back to bring the record, even though the distance is too far. he barely makes it to B5 alive and delivers the evidence. Lyta is trying to broker deals to get long range survey ships to look for a homeworld. She is turned down by corporate clients and turns to G'kar, bringing up an offer to buy her DNA to develop telepaths (from "The Gathering"). She says she accepts. He consults with his government then tells Lyta there is a condition; she and other telepaths may be asked to scan other ambassadors from time to time, without their knowledge. Lyta refuses and G'Kar then reveals that he was testing her, to see how far she would go. He agrees to her deal. Garibaldi has a dream of a destroyed B5, his friends dead. Franklin confronts him about having needed him, but he wasn't tere. he awakens to find Lyta there, eyes glowing, testing the limits of her abilities. She commands him to forget and believe it is a dream. he awakens again in an empty room, to his bell ringing. It is Lise, back to visit. They catch up and Lise finds a whiskey bottle. She angrily confronts Michael, but he says it is his act of rebellion against what was done to him. He promises not to drink while she is there and they go out for dinner. At the restaurant he gets angry with a waiter who asks what he would like to drink, misunderstanding Garibaldi just wants coffee, no alcohol. he gets the coffee, tastes it and goes to get a better cup. In secret, he pulls out a flask and takes a swig, then pours it into the coffee. Later, Sheridan tells Garibaldi he will be needed more than ever, as they prepare to brief the council about the evidence, which will likely lead to war. Londo is warned by Centauri Prime about the evidence being brought, claiming it is a hoax. Londo knows Lennier and that it must be true. The Minister then suggests the Narns are using captured ships to discredit them. Londo isn't quite buying it. Garibaldi sends Lise back to Mars, as war is about to break out. Things are ramping up for the climax of the arc. Lise knows Garibaldi is drinking. Will it spell the end of their relationship? Lyta is poking around in his mind. He can't hide much longer. Lyta's deal with a G'Kar is a call back to the pilot, when G'Kar tries to broker a more cynical deal, with either a DNA sample of, as he suggests, a "direct mating," where they would explore her pleasure threshold. Lyta brings that conversation up and tells G'Kar that she has been testing her limits and she doesn't have a limit to her pleasure threshold. G'Kar lets out a low whistle as she departs.

Episode 16: "And All My Dreams Torn Asunder" Guest stars: Synopsis: Delenn is sitting vigil over a candle, dreading the coming confrontation. Sheridan tries to get her to go back to sleep, but can't. In the morning, they present their evidence to Londo, then to the council. Franklin comfirms that energy burns on victims are consistent with Centauri weaponry. Garibaldi details his mission to the Drazi homeworld and the ID of the Imperial Guard uniform button. Londo has been barred from the meeting, but is summoned by G'Kar. Lennier's evidence is then presented, to Londo's astonishment. Nevertheless, he denies his government's involvement. Sheridan announces a blockade of Centauri jumpgates until they admit their involvement and make reparations. Londo threatens violent confrontation and that the Republic is withdrawing from the Alliance. He returns to Centauri Prime, with G'Kar in tow, where they see masses of ships flying overhead, recalling the flight of Shadow vessels. He demands to see the Regent and is rebuffed. The Minister orders the arrest of G'Kar, for security. Londo refuses and says they must arrest him, too. White Stars are dispatched to monitor the jumpgates and Garibaldi is tasked to coordinate their reports. One reports in that a Centauri ship is moving to break the blockade, in Drazi space. Michael is passed out drunk and misses the report. The ship moves in on its own. Fighting erupts. When reports reach the council they are up in arms, demanding war. Sheridan angrily gives in, chastising them for ignoring chances of peace. He also questions Garibaldi about things, how they missed the report. The episode ends with Delenn sitting another vigil, as war is about to commence. Great episode, where everything comes to a head. It is directed by Mira Furlan's husband, Goran Gajic. Londo suspects the Regent is behind things and we see the alien presence, again. The Alliance has been spoiling for a war and it is launched.

However, travel is dangerous along those lanes. Lennier arrives in a White Star to escort Delenn. They find themselves under attack and Delenn is injured. A Centauri ship comes out of hyperspace and targets the B5 jump gate for a kamikaze run, as they have at other points in the galaxy. Starfuries take it out, but it causes damage, delaying its use. meanwhile, the Narn and Drazi combined fleet launches an attack on Centauri Prime. Londo finally meets with the Regent, who seems mad. he talks about his final act for "them," that he sent away their defensive ships and turned off the defense network. Londo races to try to reactivate it, but the attack has begun. So, the Centauri ships were controlled with Shadow technology, which means the Drakh are manipulating things, via the Regent. Londo is experimented on, but what does it mean? Has a Keeper been implanted? Was it a dream? Delenn is in trouble; can she be rescued? Can Centauri Prime be saved? Great dramatic episode. We see that Lyta is growing beyond the constraints that held her back. Londo is trying to bring things under control on Centauri Prime, but is failing and may lose control of himself. What of G'Kar?

The Drakh tells Londo that they have planted nuclear devices that he will detonate, unless Londo submits to their will. To save his people, Londo does. Centauri ships appear and it looks like the end. Lennier confesses his love and Delenn says she knows. The Centauri then hail a rescue and Delenn acts like she hadn't heard Lennier. They are rescued. Outstanding episode. Londo is now under complete control of the Drakh, as we saw in "War Without End" We now know why Centauri Prime was devastated in a war involving the Alliance. Londo has completely isolated himself, sending away both G'Kar and Vir (who is now the ambassador to B5). Lennier's love of Delenn is now in the open. Lennier regrets his actions when they are rescued. What will he do now? He ran off to join the Rangers because of Delenn's marriage; how much further can he run? Episode 19: "Wheel of Fire" Guest stars: Synopsis: G'Kar returns to B5 and is met by Lochley, who says she thought he would need to see a friendly face. he soon sees others, as hundreds of Narns are waiting for him. The worship has grown geometrically. The Kha'Ri want him to return to be a symbol to his people. He wants none of it. His people won't listen to him and he is driven mad by demands for his blessings. Franklin summons Garibaldi to the meeting he is missing and finds him passed out. He tries to fake his way through the meeting and Sheridan angrily declares that Michael is drunk. he sends everyone outside and has a private discussion, then returns to Michael. Garibaldi offers his resignation and Sheridan tells him that he needs to take time for himself and work through this. He can take all the time he needs; but, he doesn't have to go it alone. Later, Lochley comes to see him and Garibaldi thinks it is to gloat. She angrily retorts and throws his excuses and rationalizations back at him, revealing her own history with drugs and alcohol, suggesting the reason they butt heads is that they are so much alike. She offers him help. She also contacts Lise, who returns to help Michael, asking him to come with her to Mars to help run Edgars Industries. Zack shows Lochley information about a bombing of the Psi Corps. All evidence points to Lyta. They go to arrest her and find her in open conversation with an arms dealer. Garibaldi later meets with Lyta, in her cell and offers a deal. In exchange for breaking Bester's neural blocks, he will covertly finance her organization, via a Shadow account. She agrees, but he must have things up and running within two years. Episode 21: "Objects at Rest" Guest stars: Synopsis: Sheridan and Delenn are packing for their departure. Sheridan talks to Lochley and asks for a quiet departure; no ceremony. They reflect on the year. Outside G'Kar's quarters, Vir finds Ta'Lon trying to ring the bell, but he gets no response. Vir informs him of G'Kar's departure. Ta'Lon says he received a message to come there. he hacks his way in and a message activates. G'Kar tells him that he has chosen Ta'Lon to be the new Narn ambassador, as he is level headed and honorable. He gives Ta'laon some advice and wishes him well. Franklin has dinner with his subordinate, Dr Hobbs and informs her that she is to be the new chief of Medlab. She feels that others are more qualified bu he says she has the most experience across the board, while the others are specialists. She is the best equipped to lead. He then makes his departure for Earth. A story breaks on ISN, about Sheridan and Delenn's impending departure. They are met by Lennier, to board their ship. Lochley informs them that word has gotten out and there is a crowd waiting. Sheridan defers to Delenn, since she has been there longer. After returning the salute, the White Star jumps to hyperspace for their journey. Sheridan is restless and Delenn suggests he take a walk. Along the way, a coolant leak causes an emergency and Sheridan and a crewmember are trapped behind a safety door, with the toxic gasses. Lennier comes along, but hesitates. Sheridan calls for help and Lennier turns back the way he came. He halts and turns to go back to help. meanwhile, Sheridan finds the Rangers fighting pike and uses it to smash the door, releasing them, as others come along. lennier sees they are free, catches Sheridan's eye, and runs away. Later, they get a report that he stole a fighter and left the ship for deep space. Delenn tries to contact him, but he won't respond. Sheridan agrees to let the matter go, hoping Lennier will return to face Delenn. Sheridan and Delenn arrive on Minbar and are surprised to be greeted by Londo. he has made a state visit to welcome them. Oer dinner, he suggests that he made a fiery address to his people to inspire them to rebuild, but, his heart is still with them. He offers them a gift, for their unborn child. It is an urn, with a sealed base. Londo says it has water from the time of the first emperor. It is the custom to present it on the child's 16th birthday. They thank him for it and make their goodbyes. Later, the Drakh tells Londo he has done well and reward him with an hour in control of his own mind and body. We see a sleeping keeper inside the urn, waiting for the day it will be released. And so, the saga effectively ends, though not quite. Everyone has departed the station and the new command staff and ambassadors pay tribute to the old. Christopher Franke's music in that scene is probably the single best piece he created for the series, setting the mood for the mostly silent scene. When the music swells and Lochley steps forward and salutes, it brings tears to me, as it is a fitting goodbye, filled with real emotion. We see Sheridan returning it, wishing them well, in their new roles. However, this being Babylon 5, we look to the future and see impending darkness, in Londo's gift of the boobytrapped urn. Now we know about Delenn's message to Sheridan, in the future, that "David is safe." When they meet up, she will tell him that David escaped the keeper, somehow. All that is left now is the epilogue and it is a doozy!

Peter David's Centauri trilogy relates what happens next. We see Londo and Timov grow closer, as she tries to help him. However, he is forced to push her away, to protect her from the Drakh. Vir meets the Technomage Galen, who shows him the reality of the masters on Centauri Prime. Together, they build a resistance. Eventually, a bomb is planted and exploded, killing most of the Drakh and revealing them to the populace, who turn on them. Londo is presented with the captured Sheridan and Delenn, as seen in "War Without End," and subdues his keeper with alcohol, to release them safely. Then, G'Kar comes and ends it, killing Londo, though his keeper awakens and G'Kar dies in the struggle, too. Vir finds the aftermath and ascends to the throne, now leading the Centauri to rebuild, finally free of Shadow influence. Vir really comes into his own in the trilogy and Timov is given some nice elements, as well.

Series finale
Episode 22: "Sleeping in Light"
Guest stars: This is just family...
Synopsis: 20 years after the Shadow War, John Sheridan awakes from a dream of Lorien, telling Delenn that he has, perhaps, 20 years of life. He has had it every night. he tells Delenn it is time to gather everyone. Rangers spread out and deliver invitations. On Earth, we see Dr Stephen Franklin, with grey hair, receive his. Gen. Susan Ivanova is seated in an office, when hers is presented. Michael Garibaldi is alerted by his daughter and reads his. Emperor Vir Cotto the First receives his at the Imperial palace. They all travel to Minbar, for a reunion with Sheridan and Delenn. They sit around the dinner table reminiscing, when Vir tells a story about Londo and the Pak'Mara.
Later, Delenn pulls Ivanova aside and talks to her, seeing she is unhappy. She says she has no purpose anymore; she is just a warhorse trotted out for parades. Delenn asks her to assume the leadership of the Anla'Shok, the Rangers. Ivanova says she will think about it. Sheridan and Delenn spend a last night together. In the morning, Sheridan rises early and puts on his Army of Light uniform. He finds Delenn waiting for him.
Sheridan takes out a White Star and travels to babylon 5, where he meets the last commander. It is being decommissioned and destroyed, as a hazard to navigation. It has served its purpose and the universe has moved on. Sheridan runs into Zack. Zack says he will probably still be there when they turn out the lights. Sheridan says he is headed to the Coriana System, where the end came to the Shadow War. He shuts down the ship systems, his own energy fading. he tells the computer to stop recording. He hears Lorien's voice again. He tells him that there are old friends waiting for him, beyond the rim.
Finally, the documentary comes to an end, with a tribute to those who made it possible...
In "The Geometry of Shadows," Elric, the Technomage, spoke of how to say goodbye to a loved one, who is dying. This episode illustrates it. Sheridan's friends are gathered together for one last farewell. The share old times, remember absent friends and say goodbye to a loved one. Delenn spends one last, perfect moment with the man she loves and then lets him go off to face his end, with no regrets. As G'kar says, in "Objects in Motion," "I believe when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains." Sheridan will always be there with them, with delenn. She spends the rest of her life, greeting the sun on Minbar, seeing her departed love in its light.
Joe Straczynski is the technician, at the end, who turns out the lights. It is fitting. He conceived an epic sci-fi series, about the rise and fall of empires, as witnessed by a group of people, on a space station, in a neutral part of space. They sought to bring peace to the galaxy and did so, after long struggle. They watched giants stride across the cosmos and leave their galaxy. They watched darkness descend on their home planets and then brought back the light. JMS delivered a tv series that had something to say and brought some of the best writing in television, in any genre. He had a saying, echoed by Delenn on several occasions: "Faith manages." Every season looked like it might be the last, only to get a last minute reprieve. Season 4 was the end, until TNT came to the rescue. Fans had faith in the series and were rewarded a hundredfold. Faith manages.
The series had a loyal, but small following in the US. Warner never put their marketing might into it; but, it made its mark and then some. A sequel series followed, Crusade, after a pilot movie, where we see the Drakh poison the Earth. The crew of the advanced ship, the Excalibur, seek a cure for the Drakh plague, with the aid of the Technomage Galen. Unfortunately, JMS and Warner butted heads from the start and he departed the series and they killed it. We got the Lost Tales, and a last ditch attempt at a series about the Rangers (Legend of the Rangers) which did not fly. Babylon 5 is done. However, it lives on in dvd, where you can see its brilliance. Blu-ray has not yet been released.
