I'm kind of neutral; if it goes ahead, I'll give it a go; but, it will be hard to capture what they had in the original. They can learn from their mistakes, in terms of stories; but, the cast is another matter. You don't have Mira Furlan and Andreas Katsulas to give voice to those tremendous speeches and you will be hard pressed to find actors who can bring similar talent and gravitas to parts like those, if not those characters.

I finally had a chance to sit down and watch The Gathering. The entire series is currently on HBO MAX for those interested. Political intrigue in a sci-fi setting with some solid practical effects. The CGI seems a little dated in the pilot but it didn't take me out of the story. Looking forward to watching how this plays out!

They had a tighter budget for the pilot movie; but, they retooled several things and recast, when they went to series. 3 of the main actors (Tamlyn Tomita, Patricia Tallman, and Johnny Seka) were replaced, Christopher Franke, of Tangerine Dream, took over the music (Stewart Copeland in the original broadcast of the pilot, Franke retooled it when they showed the re-edited version, on TNT). The first episode of the initial season shows a tremendous leap forward in the CGI and has a terrific space battle. They also redesigned some of the make-up, particularly the Minbari and, especially, Delenn. The original idea was that they were androgynous, which is how it was done in the pilot, then there would be a transformation, later on. When they went to series, they let female Minbari be obviously female, redid the bone crests and slightly altered the transformation that occurs, in Season 2. G'Kar's make-up was redesigned, too, giving it a more natural look, in my opinion. One thing they didn't do, when they went to series, was cast the new actors as the characters replaced after the pilot. They were brand new characters, who were slotted into those roles and the original characters were said to have been reassigned from the station. Pat Tallman later came back, as her character, Lyta Alexander, as a special guest, then stayed as a regular cast member, after her replacement, Andrea Thompson, decided to leave the series. Thompson portrayed Talia Winters, the replacement commercial telepath. Richard Biggs was Dr Stephen Franklin, and Claudia Christian was LCDR Susan Ivanova. Originally, Straczynski intended for Tomita's LCDR Takashima to leave the station and Ivanova would be promoted to her post. When they decided to recast, they just advanced the character into the slot and transferred Takashima's role partially to Ivanova and partially to another character. The series is really good; but, the first season is uneven, so give it a chance. They are doing a lot of character introduction and world building, for the first third or so. There are some shaky episodes in there. Once Mr Morden is introduced, it improves. Then, late in the season, there are some filler episodes that aren't so great; but, the last couple are damn good and carry things over to the next season. Season 2 hits the ground running, but they had to make a major cast change, due to illness, but the character remained in continuity and comes back, later, to fulfill their role. S2 is pretty solid, for most of the season. Season 3 is terrific and 4 is nearly as good, but runs into a hiccup, at the end, as they weren't originally going to get the 5th and final season; but, then got a last minute reprieve. So, one storyline was supposed to carry over into Season 5, but didn't and Season 5 had to spin its wheels, for about the first third, before getting back to the intended story arc, to finish the story. I will also say that your impressions of characters, based on the pilot, may radically change, if you continue watching. Everyone goes on a journey; some grow to become better, some become more tragic.

I posted this in the New and Upcoming Movie thread earlier today, but JMS announced there is a Babylon 5 animated movie in the works, and that the script is done and turned in a little while ago, so it will be moving forward.

I could spot the news actors voicing classic characters; but, it was nice to hear Peter Jurasik, Claudia Christianson and Patricia Tallman. I also see they have Bill Mumy and Tracy Scroggins, there, too. It's sad how many actors have passed away. I was listening intently to Zathras, as Tim Coate died so long ago and I was trying to determine if they were sampling series dialogue or not; but, I see it is a new actor, doing a very good imitation. Phil Lamarr is doing Dr Franklin. It is too bad that Mira Furlan is gone, as you can tell delenn isn't the same. Same with G'Kar, without Andreas Katsulas. That series really let him show what he could do, instead of just playing heavies and Mediterranean type villains.
Much better than a rehash, with a less talented bunch of actors.
No boom today; boom tomorrow!

I streamed this a few weeks ago and give it good marks as a nostaglic romp for those of us who really know the series in its entirety. They used what could otherwise be a tired trope of alternate realities to good effect to achieve this. They even did right by the Season 1 characters/setting which was kind of a bonus to me (I have a soft spot for that season even though things really come together obviously in Season 2 with Boxleitner on board).
In terms of a compelling storyline of its own, not so much I think. Pretty predictable where it was going to head at least for those of us who know the lore, and I really don't know that this would be great viewing for a more casual fan or even make much sense to someone new to the property. Not essential viewing overall, but again, it made me smile getting to revisit even though yes, the many original actors and actresses we've lost makes it bittersweet at the same time.
