First comic I read that got me interested in collecting: The first comic I bought after deciding to become a collector/regular reader: Of course I was reading comics before 1985, but for the life of me I cant remember my very first. If we can ever take a pill to enhance our memories, that will be on my bucket list.

My first ever Marvel comic was Fantastic Four #172. My first Avenger was Avengers #161. My first X-Men was #117. My first Marvel reprint was Marvel Triple Action #44, reprinting Avenger #52... which led to my first experience with the original X-Man, Marvel Triple Action #45, reprinting X-Men #45. The visuals in that one had a big impact on me. I loved the cover, and when I made my own comic, I had several swipes from that issue. Those are the first Marvel issues that I can remember. Also, the earliest Amazing Spider-Man I can remember is #200. This is a few years after the above books, though, and I was mostly into team books. It's possible I may have picked up an issue of Spidey Super Stories prior to this, though. However, I was never a regular reader of Spider-Man.

On the recommendation of my best friend at the age of 12... I had absolutely no idea what was going on. This is why I dropped the X-men book after issue # 200, too many subplots and backstories to keep track of. Sorry, I always felt Claremont was overrated. I don't know if Claremont was overrated, but he definitely seemed to lose his way after a while. I feel like he ran out of good ideas and started recycling old ones, plus like you say, X-Men got ridiculously convoluted. I have also noticed, even going back to earlier stuff, that a lot of his characters sound alike, with the same speech patterns. Still I love his stuff from the 70's through about 1984 (though perhaps I'm being generous by extending it to 1984).

The first I remember buying was this, in January, 1965. But I must have read something before this. For the life of me, though, I have no clear memory of what it might have been.

I must have bought this because of the page 1 splash: I started buying comic books only as a substitute for Famous Monsters of Filmland, so almost all of my early comic books had monster characters in them. Triton qualified.

Vacation purchase. If the hotel gift shop had any DCs, never would have picked it up. Enjoyed it, but very upset that both the FF and Doc Strange stories ended on cliffhangers. For a quarter, I wanted closure. Second Marvel was a coverless copy of Spider-Man 101(?) I found on the sidewalk.
