Does this bother you as a collector? Old comic books were printed on paper not meant to last a lifetime, correct or incorrect? Sure, comics can be stored properly with acid free bags/boards, but just how long before they are destroyed by the ravages of time? Will the best preserved copy of Action Comics #1 degrade further despite the best efforts towards preservation in the next 100 years? I have seen comic books from the 1980's (improperly stored) already start to show signs of foxing and brown tinted pages, so just wondering how long the best efforts of preservation will extend the life of comics printed on that old newsprint stock paper?

1. I don't worry about my own personal "collection" since I just read them. Never intended to make money off my collection (although I have at times).
2. I do think important issues should be preserved somehow, somewhere as part of pop culture history. But if they don't... there are more important things for me to worry about.
3. I'm sure there is a way to preserve them for a very long time. They have ways to keep old documents around for a very long time.

1. No it doesn't bother me personally since I buy comics to read & enjoy. 2. Yes it does bother me because they should be preserved somehow as part of pop culture history. 3. I'm sure there is a way to preserve them for a very long time. 😀

I accept that they will deteriorate eventually. I have about 12k comics and I want my wife to burn them all when I die but she's trying to talk me out of it.

^Please don't I would not say I worry too much about it. I try to buy stuff that is VG to VF in condition to begin with, that way I have a fighting chance of at least keeping it intact during my life time. I bag and board and store in good indoor conditions, away from direct light. I would hope that classic and rare issues are preserved by museums. Heck if paper from ancient books, manuscripts and importan documents can last, I am sure comics will too. As for burning them one you are gone, I would suggest 3 alternatives 1. Giving to your family to sell so they have some financial stability (maybe assist with this before you go) 2. While selling, you could allow friends who are fellow collectors have first dibs, knowing that they will treasure the books beyond your life. 3. If money is not the goal, donate...someone somewhere will treasure them like you have.

Nope. I don't worry about it.
My comics are what they are. And most that I've had over the years that are expensive were already sold to pay for necessities.
It does me zero good to worry about theoretical issues of Action #1. Someone somewhere is probably preserving some of them. If they aren't...oh well. I can read Shakespeare 400 years later. I can read Action #1 80 years later. But I can't read either of them in the original. And barring inventing a time machine I never would have been able to do so .

But I'm expecting to be here another 30 years...

Well, I am now! Thanks a lot!
No, I'm another of these people who just has them to read, so I'd only worry about that stuff ifit happened fast enough to interfere with my own reading enjoyment.

Nope. None of my comics are overly expensive anyway, but more importantly, I own them to read, not to fret about their condition. That said, I do bag all my comics and board some too, so I definitely want them to stay in roughly the same condition they were in when I bought them, but if they suffer wear from my reading them, I'm not gonna sweat it because that's what they're for.
As for worrying about other people's comics, out there in the world somewhere, you're kidding, right?

Well, there are platinum age pulps out there that are still holding up, so I know my books still have some time left. Hopefully, they'll outlive me (and not because I die anytime soon...).

I worry more about it since lack of space forced me to move most of my floppies to the garage.

I don't have any floppies around because I sold all my floppies and got DC Comics Archives and Marvel Masterworks instead. I have floppies (valuable ones) in my Safety Deposit Box at my Bank for storage. I have 35 of them that are considered valuable and they are all graded 7.0 and higher.

Stored in the proper environment your comics shouldn't suffer any of those things. No, I don't worry about it at all.
