Invaders # 23
The Cover
I like this cover. The Scarlet Scarab seems somewhat interesting and I like the background a lot. The absence of sidekicks on the cover also kinda makes me happy. Plus, I am imagining a montage where the Bangles' song plays whilst the Invaders and Scarlet Scarab do battle
The Story
We kick things off with the team waiting anxiously for results on Toro's surgery. And right away, I spot me a No-Prize opportunity! Minor but on the wall it appears to say "Waiting Room" but Namor is blocking the "W". However, it has been misspelled and se just see "ating Room". Maybe it was actually a Dating Room? Perhaps a Mating Room? Seems a bit risqué for the time though.
Anyway, Toro needs special surgery and only one person has done it before and he lives in the US but cannot travel due to his own issues. Bucky volunteers to use Namor's ship to fly Toro there while Torch and the rest of the Invaders head off on an urgent mission they have been called to. So the sidekicks are sidelined for this one is seems and I can live with that.
The rest of the group (Cap, Namor, Torch, Spitfire and Union Jack) meet up at Big Ben where they are told of a battle in Egypt as some fanatics are fighting against the British there, thinking that if the Germans win, they will be freed. This poses a problem because if Africa is claimed it could prolong the war. So the gang heads off to Egypt where they are immediately attacked by pharaoh garbed radicals. They capture one but the radicals kill their own so he won't give away their secrets. The group (called the Sons of the Scarab) then seemingly disappear into thin air.
The team is met by their liason, along with an archaeology expert. He is apparently there to make sure no damage is done to the pyramids and to provide his knowledge of them. Apparently, they believe that this Sons of Scarab group are hiding in the pyramids so the Invaders must do some exploration. Let me pause here to say I am suspect of this character, Dr. Faoul.
Annnd sure enough, he leads Namor and Torch to the pyramids to "monitor" their destruction in search of hiding spots. Well, they find a hidden chamber and inside, a scarlet scarab! Dr. Faoul grabs it and reveals himself to be a member of the Sons of the Scarab (their leader in fact!) and he now has super powers from this scarab. The issue ends with Cap and Spitfire watching as Namor and Torch attempt to combat this newest foe.
Opinions
A good story and obviously the start of a new little story arc. Not sure of my history, but I do like that they are in Egypt. Springer returns for the interior artwork and it works nicely...he has a couple nice panels with planes and tanks that look very good. The plan to search for the Sons of Scarab's hideout was a bit crazy...basically Torch was used to blast tunnels and Namor would use his strength to push the rock back into place so that there was no damage. Strange. But again, it was intriguing enough and I am looking forward to seeing where this mini storyline goes.

And in his place, the Scarlet Scarab...deadly enemy of any and all who would grind the Black Land beneath their conquering heel!-Scarlet Scarab making his grand announcement into the world!
