There were three mini series that were reviled by many that I enjoyed: 1. Batman vs. The JSA 2. Secret Invasion 3. Identity Crisis The last two , I couldn't wait between chapters. 1. Batman vs. The JSA Oh, my stars and garters! (Do not let Kurt read your post!)
2. Secret Invasion Oh, Holy Gimmmick! (But harmless, at least.)3. Identity Crisis Oh, Dear God Above! (Measure yourself for sackcloth and dive into the ashes.)Despite all this, I will continue to look forward to your posts in the "Don't Call Them Swipes" thread and elsewhere. I can occasionally overlook the faults of others.

Although I didn't like what it did to two characters (you know which), I have to say that I too found Identity Crisis a gripping read.

Code Name: Assassin, from First Issue Special. I already covered it in my reviews of First Issue Special; but, I really liked the issue and the concept and saw a lot of potential in it. Like I said in my review and the CCF podcast, it is kind of a proto-Deathstroke. Black Goliath is another. My cousin had all 5 issues, plus his appearances in The Champions and I really liked the character. Less a comic than a character; Paladin, at Marvel. The color scheme was all wrong; but, I liked the basic design of the costume and I enjoyed the character, as written. he was never used particularly well (decent appearance in Marvel Team-Up and does turn up in Captain America, though I was so-so about his turn there. The revised costume wasn't much better. I liked the idea of a swashbuckling mercenary; but, it just seemed like he never fell into the hands of the perfect writer. Torpedo was another. I also seem to be in the minority about this JLA/JSA crossover: Evil Cary Bates? How can you not like it? Hated that Robin costume, though...

Yep, Black Goliath and Paladin are characters I also like. In the latter's case, I only ever read his appearance in Marvel Premiere, but I really enjoyed that story and re-read it quite a few times back in the day. I also had the entire run of Black Goliath, which I bought on the cheap in 1981; that was a case where I really liked the character more than the actual stories. The last issue was a cut above the first four, I thought, with a better story and much better art. I also liked it when BG guest-starred in the Champions. On a similar note on the DC side, I really liked Ragman, and also the original run of Black Lightning.

BG was killed like a dog in Civil War, it was a shame.

BG was killed like a dog in Civil War, it was a shame. Me too, and I also had the original run of the Black Lightning too EdoBosnar and it's was great. I was a fan of Black Goliath too and like Icctrombone mentioned that he was killed in the Civil War so undignified it was grave injustice of what Marvel done to him.

I own those Black Goliath issues but have never read them. Since the run is so short, I probably should get around to it at some point.
I am also a fan of Paladin, as I like the "merc with a conscience" vibe from him. I used to pick up all of his appearances as one-offs before I started collecting full runs.

I was a fan or Torpedo as well. The only times that I've read of Torpedo were his appearances with Rom: Had that, I picked up that run of Rom, with Torpedo and the X-Men appearing. Also liked Duela Dent, when she was first introduced, in Batman Family, as The Joker's Daughter. Really great series of stories and an interesting concept; but, her Titans appearances weren't quite the same (and the book was cancelled soon after) and she wasn't used well after, especially when Marv and George had her turn up as overweight and too old in Tales of the Teen Titans, at Donna Troy's wedding. A super-villain's kid trying to atone for their parent's deeds had potential. Roy Thomas tried similar, with Brainwave Jr, in Infinity, Inc; but, the character was not really all that engaging.

I really, really liked Hal as the Spectre Haters gonna hate but at least be fair enough to read the material and then decide. This volume collects the back up stories from Justice League by Johns & Frank. They nailed it. Shazam is updated for the modern age in a modern way but that is respectable to the original. Honestly, it couldn't be better IMO. I knew when I read it that this would be the version for the big screen. Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray bring their distinctive freshening to the concept, a good thing. This is one of the concepts I'm looking forward to returning someday. I liked having the pulp-verse setting here with Doc Savage and the Spirit along with a younger Batman who still used guns. Bonus appearances by Justice Inc and Rima jungle girl. Jonah Hex is one of my favorite characters. I'll still buy anything with him in it, yes, including Mad Max Hex. A crazy 80's thing, it's still fun. Is it just me or does Hex look like Josh Brolin here ? Coincidence or time travel ?
