If Alex Ross did a Justice League of America and his first cover is similar to this picture and had a run of 100 or more comics ... i.e Grant (127 Comics) Morrison and had an excellent writer and all ... he would be my Number One Artist for the JLA. Did you like his Justice maxi? (I did.) I don't know anything about it ... could you please send me a PM of a picture of a cover thanks.

My favorites would be Mike Mignola, Tonci Zonjic, and Stan Sakai.
I remember being wowed by Mignola's Gotham by Gaslight cover as a kid.

Of these, I went with Adam Hughes and Brian "Brain" Bolland. I like John Buscema better than both of them, but I wanted to choose folks who were known for being cover artists particularly.

Dave McKean gets an honorable mention for me as well. Part of the joy of reading Sandman monthly was seeing what McKean would come up with for each issue.

He also created the classic Batman logo found on the above covers of Batman 175/189. One of the greatest joys I've ever experienced in comics is coming across an issue with an Infantino cover and one of the greatest disappointments was coming across such an issue where his artwork didn't extend to the interiors. I would nevertheless read any comic with a cover by Infantino but interiors by someone else simply because covers such as these had already hooked me in. Besides, I'd still be desperate to know how "Our story begins on a simple day in Gotham/Metropolis/Central City" turns into any of these events. Infantino came up with some great covers for DC in the 60s but I'm never sure how much of the credit is due to Murphy Anderson on covers like this one, my favourite of the several in the original post. It could be that I'm prejudiced against Infantino because I dislike his 70s work for Marvel and elsewhere.

Mine was nearly a 3-way tie. I had a really difficult time choosing between Neal Adams and Brian Bolland. Both are extremely good at compelling cover images, but Adams has more dynamism and energy whereas Bolland can come up with utterly bizarre, surreal pictures. I had to go with Adams just because I like his art a little better. However, the other cover artist was never in doubt - The criminally underrated Jose Luis Garcia Lopez!

A bonus from Garcia-Lopez, a cover and the original art.

Someone mentioned Frazetta - that reminds me, there could be a whole different thread for painted covers - I mean mainly those done for the black and white mags that were so numerous in the 60s and 70s. Frazetta, Sanjulian and the other Warren guys, Vallejo, lots of candidates.

Dang this is a tough one. Went with John Romita Sr since he had such a big hand in Marvel covers as the Art Director. Other as my second vote since that would cover (pun intended) Infantino's incredible run as the main cover artist/director for DC in the 60's and I love Perez's covers, and Gil Kane's Marvel covers sit in my mental lobe during the 70's. The Buscema brothers did a ton of great covers over the years. Garcia Lopez is 80's DC cover artist supreme. Neal Adam's made creativity special for covers. Byrne hits a lot of the high notes during his Marvel and DC runs. Kubert is the SUPREME War comics cover artist. Grell makes for spectacular cover artwork. Andru covers are always striking and Kirby could make you buy a comic just by the cover alone. Sooooo much to choose from...
