You can be sure they will be collected in some form.

You can be sure they will be collected in some form. They were mostly all Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade tie in issues I just never bought. The appearances in them are probably pretty minor and insignificant. So I don't imagine they're too expensive now. Or with patience something I could probably find in dollar bins too. Plus there's no such thing as a Darkseidcopter. That's easily a con in which is the better villain. free image upload no sign up

You're missing out. He's the most complex character to come along since these funny books have been published. You must be talking about some other Thanos. The version I'm familiar with is about as complex as a ball bearing. Cei-U! I summon the big, purple-skinned yawn!

A character who loves death and is a serial killer with the power of Thor and the intelligence of Reed Richards, yet has a fear that he's not worthy of ultimate power? Cmon, Kurt.

His putative insecurity does not seem to come up much, nor do I buy him as a brilliant thinker. Mainly I think of him as saying, "Muahahaha, must destroy the universe!" while punching some hero in the face.

You're missing out. He's the most complex character to come along since these funny books have been published. I recognize this is hyperbole, but.... Well I hope it's hyperbole... I mean I've not read anything with Thanos in it 30 years probably... But...The most complex character...that's a pretty significant claim.

I was thinking the same thing... he's pretty one note.. he loves death and wants everyone to die. Mostly I just hate Thanos for having a 1st appearance in Iron Man and making another book in the series out of my price range.

That's so out of place / embarrassing. Now, I will not be able to forget that image when watching Avengers: Infinity War later this month...

I won't wax intellectual about Thanos. I can't say what the appeal to him is for me, but it's there. I also think both Warlock and Thanos are stronger characters in stories together than separate. They have developed a good repertoire between the two of them since their first meeting. I've always felt Thanos as a more interesting character as an ally if only to further his own means. Or to use heroes to help him accomplish his own goals when they are beyond his means. The straight nihilistic lover of death was interesting when I would read comics and the Bible in same day. But the rebellious, for the lack of a better word, attitude of reading something that would make my folks fear for my soul more than pornography has wore off. But I still like them both. Just for different reasons now.

For those who don't know the story. The original Starlin Thanos design was closer to Metron, not Darkseid. It was Roy Thomas that suggested Starlin revamp him to the be more like Darkseid. I never read a lot of Thanos because he seemed like a less interesting Darkseid, just a cosmic tough who engaged in close quarters combat instead of doing most of his dirty work from a distance, as true tyrants like Kang and Dr. Doom were known to do. The other character that I think of in the same breath is Claremont's Apocalypse, who also never caught my fancy. Okay. So. I don't disagree with all of that, but I love Thanos. Dude in literal love with LITERALLY DEATH is a great, great character hook. And being "Marvel Darkseid" isn't a bad thing to be. The two always represented their respective companies for me... Darkseid is dispassionate, intellectual, removed... A good representation of the "Flash Facts"/parallel world based sci-fi/Let's teach the kids Science! (and don't offend the comics code with violence) DC intellectualism. While Thanos was about operatic passion and physical action. He was... well, he was really K-I-R-B-Y (and, hence, Marvel) in a way that Darkseid wasn't.

I just can't explain this, but I think Thanos is much more interesting than Darkseid ... In the 60s to the late 80's ... I prefer Darkseid and after the 90's and today (current) ... Thanos that I can relate more than Darkseid.

Thanos can-
Beat you in a hand to hand fight ( Avengers Annual #7)
Out think you ( Thanos Quest)
Manipulate heavy hitters, including Galactus( Infinity War)
And it's all for an insane perverse love of death. Everyone is afraid when he shows up. Even in the MCU, he's going to show up and hand everyone their lunch.

By contrast, (and I forget where I read this) I heard that Kirby intended Darkseid to be fairly week and cowering once the heroes finally tracked him down, showing that evil is not that powerful and that bullies are all bark and no bite. (Which is also kind of interesting, IMO.)

Wikipedia says (Note: Wikipedia is wrong A LOT!) That the idea behind Infinity Gauntlet came from Steve Englehart (not Starlin) as a Silver Surfer storyline. Marvel Editor in Chief Bob Harras had never head of Thanos but thought the storyline had crossover potential. So they got Starlin to write it. The Editor in Chief who fell out with Englehart was actually Tom DeFalco. According to Englehart's website, Silver Surfer #23 would have featured Thanos and Mantis, but DeFalco vetoed this and forced Englehart to write formulaic single-issue stories with a moral, and featuring the Surfer moping about Shalla Bal. Englehart used the credit SFX Englehart for a few issues, intended to suggest he was only allowed to write sound effects. Silver Surfer #24 featured a story entitled GIGO, which stood for Garbage In, Garbage Out.
