Thoughts:
The good: Nice cover paying tribute to Batman #9 by Jack Burnley. Miller addressing Dick's kidnapping by Batman. Batman's thoughts on the last few pages humanizes him as he grieves over what Dick has lost. The last page by Lee is haunting.
The bad: As usual Miller can not have anyone be heroic. Here he portrays Hal as a total idiot. Batman's interaction with him is just inane. Both in dialogue and having everything be painted yellow.
And once again the timeline makes no sense. How could Batman have trained Robin in a few days? How could he have covered up Dick's kidnapping so quickly? In addition to the cringe worthy dialogue the screwed up timeline annoys me.

#10. Aug 2008. Captain Gordon seems to be talking to himself but Batman and Robin are listening in. A cop found Catwoman beaten who asks him to give Batman a note. The note tells Batman where she will be. He arrives and finds her badly beaten by the Joker. Robin calls Alfred for a chopper to pick her up. Then we switch to Batgirl stopping some drug dealers. She swears like a sailor while beating up thugs. Then Black Canary beating up some lowlifes. Then back to Gordon as his life falls apart around him. First his wife crashes her car while drunk and ends up in the hospital with a head injury. Then Batgirl gets caught by the police and Gordon has to go back to HQ to confront his daughter. On the last page he calls Sara whom he had an affair with years ago...

Thoughts:
The Good: Jim Lee's art is phenomenal. He has several pages that would make beautiful posters. The focus on Jim Gordon was good.
The Bad: Back to immature juvenile dialog. This issue was the recalled issue that was filled with the "F" bomb and numerous other swear words. The censored version had the curses blacked out but not very well done. All the different scenes didn't flow together. It read like a mess of totally unrelated scenes. Of course they may have paid off if there had been more issues.
Cover to #11:
#11 would never materialize. In 2010 DC announced a six issue series "Dark Knight: Boy Wonder" that would complete the series. However it never materialized.
So there you have the worst Batman series ever until this one hit the stands:

I remember this issue coming out -- the immature fanboys at my LCS were falling over themselves with glee at the naughty swear words still being legible. Myself, I always thought that there was no way this was an "accident". To me, it always seemed like a cynical attempt to court controversy, as a thinly-veiled marketing ploy. Outrage Marketing before that term was in common usage.

It led to a half hearted attempt that probably made no one happy.
Personally it just reinforced my thoughts on the whole series... that Miller was writing it as an immature 12 year old boy.

I requested All-Star Batman and Robin from the library and it took a while because my library system - The San Bernardino County Public Library - only has one copy for an area the size of Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts put together.
And I finally got it today. I read the first chapter. Oh dear. It's really bad. You only have a vague idea of how bad it is until you actually read the whole thing.
Vicki Vale at the beginning, in her underwear, she's dictating her next column, and it's so bad. Do all her columns sound like a really bad Jerry Seinfeld imitation? "What's the deal with Gotham City? Metropolis gets Superman … we get a guy who dresses like a bat!"
I won't go on and on. But it's so bad. Just so so bad.
You just have no idea how bad until you read it yourself instead of reading the words of people saying how bad it is.
I like the art. I think it would be about a hundred times better if it was published without the dialogue and the narration and the captions and all the other words.

Hoosier X -- I read the whole thing and md62 got me really curious and thanks for sharing your thoughts on it -- and it was so bad I was stunned by it. I wished that I could liked your post more; but the system allowed me just one likes. Nice write up and believe me it was that good. Michael James did a great job writing this up and got me wonder is this really that bad -- it was and your post Hoosier X was the icing on the cake!

It is indeed so bad, that re-reading this thing, I didn't dislike it as much as when I first read it. The illustrations are superb. As for the story, I would make it walk the plank and let the sharks tear it to shreds. But now, the story even though it is so bad it just makes me laugh like watching a really bad comedy. You know it's bad and know what's going to happen that it triggers a weird kind of laughter. Perhaps an insane laughter after being exposed to some Joker venom.

I guarantee if an issue #11 ever comes out from this creative team, and no matter how really really bad it is , it would either almost top the charts of issues sold that month, or be on the top three to five issues sold for that month.

Undoubtedly. Also guaranteed that anyone who pointed out it was bad would be told they “just didn’t get it”. lol.

I just finished Part Four.
So little happens in every issue that it kind of boggles my mind that it can possibly be this bad. They really packed so much badness into every word balloon and caption box.
It's still not the worst Batman story I've ever read. That distinction still goes to The Widening Gyre.
But maybe I should wait until I've read more of All-Star Batman and Robin to form a final opinion.
