It's too bad that didn't work out better... would have been nice to see comics in some form get into the public consciousness as an actual item you read, and not just IP.

Yeah, it seemed the perfect format imho. Very low price per page, and a nice combination of new material and recent reprints. Personally I would have preferred older reprints for myself, but for attracting new readers I think they were picking fairly well. Maybe loss leading $1 books at checkout counters would be better for gathering new readers. $5 might be too rich for an impulse buy. But I imagine getting shelf space at the front is pricey enough already.

I think it was more Wal-Mart didn't do it right... I never saw a copy at the 2 Wal-Marts closest to me, and at the 3rd I saw one single copy flat on a shelf in the toy section. They needed to be either at check out (preferably) or in the book/magazine section, or even an old school spinner rack in the toy section.
Maybe that happened in some places, but not in my neck of the woods.

Most of those up front shelves are serviced by outside vendors for Walmart, so Walmart didn't really have much say on how they were displayed or which stores carried it. Walmart cut the deal and paid for the stock, but the outside vendors stocked and maintained those shelves. If they were not in a given Walmart its because the outside vendor chose to use the space for something they thought would sell better, since part of their money is made on volume of sales in those sections. -M

Would be nice if there was a complete checklist of all the Wal Mart 100 pagers.

Would be nice if there was a complete checklist of all the Wal Mart 100 pagers. Here ya go-- links to checklists for each individual title... because I'm that sort of guy... Should be easy enough to compile your own from this data. Never let it be said that I don't love this place.

Batman Vol. 1 can be checked off....got all 14 issues recently. #4 features Jinny Hex, you-know-who's (great) grand-daughter and sells for some decent change by itself.

I think I have them all except for the one issue of Superman that caused a ruckus because of how Lois was depicted in it (I think it was #8 not sure) and that speculators jumped on. I only ever saw it at dealer's booths selling for 4-5X cover, never at Walmart, and I dislike rewarding bad speculator behavior, so I never picked one up. I ended up reading the original story in another format, and am glad I never paid for it.

I'm holding out hope that the Venditti Superman tales that didn't make it into the specials and are only available digitally get printed some time.

Im pretty sure that I ended up with all Walmart 100 pagers, but with my dis-organization, it may be years until I know for sure.

A quick note about my list-- I inadvertently listed DC Primal Age, which is a 100-page one-shot, but was NOT a Walmart book.
Just setting the record straight.

Just a quick note about my list-- I inadvertently listed DC Primal Age, which is a 100-page one-shot, but was NOT a Walmart book. You also had the Target exclusive Batman in your list. Both were of the same format as the Walmart books, but not available at format. An interesting note-that Target book, while the same format as the Wal Mart giants, was twice the price, it retailed at $9.99. -M

Thanks for mentioning that. I purposely included Target book in because it was a mass-market edition, but I don't think the Primal book was mass-market.

It was sold in the toy department of Target at least. Not sure if it was a Target exclusive, but it was available at Target. It was usually on the shelf below the pegs that had the Primal Age figures. -M
