Age 25. Buying comics from 4 different comic book shops, 1 by college in Tempe, 1 by Community College i was attending, 2 others downtown Phoenix and anytime i would drop into convenience stores and/or used book stores looking for things. I had just moved back home after my mom passed away from breast cancer since my dad needed help making things connect emotionally/mentally/financially and my 2 brothers still lived at home, youngest his last year in high school and middle brother just married living at home with his wife and newborn child. Being the eldest and a full time very profitable paying job as a Journeyman butcher i returned to help out. My coping at this time was working 50+ hours a week and burying myself in any and all comics i could find.
This was a time when i was big time buying back issues in the $4-5 range filling in missing issues and was filling long boxes full of goodness of yesteryear and current product. An amazing time to be reading and collecting comic books with so much variety in wonder and goodness to enjoy. Prepare yourselves for a LOOONG listing to peruse today from yesteryear:

April 1987... on the cusp of graduating high school and buying too many comics still... I was getting... Action 590 & Adventures of Superman 430...still digging the Supes revamp at the time Avengers 281-my Avengers enhusiasm was slipping fo rhte first time ever and I would soon drop the book for the first time since I became a regular collector a few months into my university tenure Batman 409 & Batman Annual 11 Classic X-Men 11 still discovering the early new X-Men stories Detective 576 we had lost Alan Davis for Todd McFarlane, a move that put Tec on shaky ground for me until Bryfogle arrived Doctor Fate #1-I was so hyped for this Giffen driven mini and I disliked Eric Strauss so much...it was one of the first major disenchantments I had with a company changing a character I really liked. I went on to enjoy the DeMatteis series a bit, but man was a I resistant to change in this case. Flash #2-I was digging the Wally series GL Corps 214-I was hanging on barely Justice League 3-the limited edition variant was the first comic I ever ordered through the mail-I think I spent $20 on it at the time, a lot for a single comic for me back then (and again today) Punisher #1 I picked it up and though it had quality writing and art it made me realize I didn't like the Punisher much as a protagonist and I didn't pick up the series after that. Shazam The New Beginning #4-the last issue of a disappointing series. Silver Surfer #1-my intro to the artistry of Marshall Rogers, I was hooked until the reality of college budgets hit and I cut many, many, books Spectre 4 I was digging the Moench series but it would be a college finance casualty in a few months Superman 7 Tales of the Legion 349-one of my earliest attempts to get into the Legion, it never took with me Thor 381 Uncanny X-Men 219-the book was taking a downturn for me at this point Watchmen 10 Web of Spider-Man #29-it wasn't a regular purchase but the Wolverine guest appearance worked with me West Coast Avengers 23 Wolverine tpb-one of the early trades I picked up, starting my like of the collected edition. I had not read these stories previously Wonder Woman 6-Perez! X-Factor 18-Simonson kept me on this book -M

Age 24 working full time hours as a part time butcher at local grocery store chain and i would travel all over the city working the various stores as managers knew me and my work abilities and that i was young and eager and working any kind of crazy hours day or night. Full blown collecting mode of anything and/or of everything that caught my attention at the time. Most of which i have now traded off or given away. Big draws at the time: Byrne Superman stuff, Perez Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, Simonson Thor, new Question by O'Neill and Cowan, Silver Surfer and Punisher start their own new series.

Bought back then: Avengers #281 Classic X-Men #11 Elementals #13 G.I. Joe #61 G.I. Joe Special Missions #6 Iron Man #220 Justice Machine #4 Marvel Age #52 Punisher #1 Robotech Masters #15 Robotech New Generation #15 Shazam New Beginning #4 Silver Surfer #1 Star Blazers #1 Star Trek #40 Superman #7 Tales of LSH #349 Uncanny X-Men #219 The buzz around the new titles for both Punisher and Silver Surfer then was massive. Though I was looking more forward to (and enjoyed more) the Surfer's debut. G.I Joe #61 had one of their best ever covers:

Like mrp, I was on the cusp of graduating high school. I was also collecting too many comics at this point, but I'm surprised in looking this over that I didn't have more. I was still regularly collecting Marvel Fanfare, but somehow missed this month. Also missed Thor. I wish I had been collecting Infinity Inc and Youn All-Stars back then, but I missed the boat on those.
Avengers #281 Classic X-Men #11 Fantastic Four #304 Legion of Super-Heroes #36 Legion of Super-Heroes Index #5 New Mutants #54 New Teen Titans #33 Official Marvel Index to the X-Men #2 Silver Surfer #1 Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes #349 Tales of the Teen Titans #79 Uncanny X-Men #219 West Coast Avengers #23 X-Factor #18

Batman #410 Detective Comics #577 Hawkman #13 Star Trek #41
I imagine that Star Trek may have come later from a used book shop, but I know that I usually picked up anything I could find with Batman and Hawkman.

MAY 1987
Full blown over accumulate anything and everything i could find since i had moved back home. Comics were medicine of choice for continued mental relief dealing with family after my mother passed away from cancer. Mostly i was the sole supporter of the family (dad, 2 brothers, 1 with a new wife and baby) and i made sure to indulge myself with comic books in support of my legal habit! Byrne was hot on his move to DC and Superman. Lots of anime beginning to catch on. Grell on Green Arrow was fantastic. Lots of series i continued to collect keeping me busy. Good mixture of Marvel/DC/Alternative companies.
