Can't believe the Byrne Superman revamp was 30 years ago.

Slash Maraud #1That's the only one I can say for sure, looking at Mike's News-stand. It's possible I also bought Swamp Thing #66, since I was following it throughout the Alan Moore run, but I don't recognise this month's cover so apparently not.

Only things I recognise from Mike's site:
Miracleman #12 Slash Maraud #2 & 3
all great comics that I still rate highly today.
I have some questions about a few of the things I missed at the time:
Conan the Barbarian and Conan the King: how good were these series at the time? I don't know much about the creators listed, writers like Owsley and Karr, artists like Semeikis.
Phantom Stranger drawn by Mignola? That seems like it must have been pretty good to look at, if nothing else. How was it?
The Shadow drawn by Sinkiewicz: sounds like a good match of style and character - did it work?
Silver Surfer: I'm a huge fan of Englehart's writing in the 70s but feel a bit sceptical about his 80s Marvel/DC work: any Englehart fans out there have an opinion on his Surfer?
Underworld: again, I don't know the writer, Robert Fleming, but a crime series drawn by Ernie Colon sounds like it should have potential. Anyone read this one?

September 1987 and comic life was good with lots of purchasing and many browsed through or read from friends or at the LCS. It's good to be buddies with the owners looking for reviews and what is liked.

Underworld: again, I don't know the writer, Robert Fleming, but a crime series drawn by Ernie Colon sounds like it should have potential. Anyone read this one? Jim Owsley is another name for Christopher Priest, who crafted one of my favorite Black Panther runs, but his Conan was just ok at best. Conan the King was uneven at best. The Sienkewicz art on Shadow is great, but only lasted the first arc. Hefler was writing and riffing a bit off the Chaykin mini, but it was a very non-traditional take on the Shadow which underperformed commercially. It is more of an interesting series than a good one. Mignola's art, paired with P. Craig Russell on inks, was gorgeous, but the story by Kupperberg was a let down. It tried to build on the conflict between the Lords of Order and Chaos established in the Dr. Fate books of the time, but it fell flat overall. Great visuals, weak story. Englehart's Surfer run is a tale of two cities. The earlier stuff, with Marshall Rogers on art is very good. But he started having issues with Marvel overall, especially on his FF run and it affected his stuff on Surfer. Rogers left and Englehart's stuff became uninspired and felt like filler to get issues out rather than stories worth telling by the end of his run when he was ousted for Starlin to take over the book. Underworld I know nothing about. -M
