Captain Marvel Jr's artist Mac Raboy was one of the finest illustrative artists from the golden age. He was also notoriously slow. As soon as he was financially able, he employed a large staff for his studio to assist him. All backgounds and inking were done by others. This was not unusual back then or even now. One thing however was
Mac Raboy believed you needn't draw anything if it could be swiped-especially from yourself. He had extensive files of his main characters in every pose possible from previous publishings. Once his swipe file was large enough, he'd use it constantly to paste his figures on the page. Towards the end of his CM Jr run, his original art pages were nothing but work by others and photostat pastings.
Mac Raboy also did the beautifully rendered but short lived series The Green Lama. He took over the Flash Gordon newspaper strip in 1946 which he worked on till he passed away in 1967

I really like the covers and samples I have seen though. -M

Number 48 - Phantom LadyAlter Ego - Sandra Knight Team Affiliations - All-Star Squadron and Freedom Fighters Created by - Eisner & Iger Studios Illustrated by - Arthur Peddy (penciler) Abilities Sandra Knight assumed the identity of Phantom Lady in a costume consisting of a green cape and the equivalent of a one-piece yellow swimsuit. She used a "black light projector," a device which allowed her to blind her enemies and make herself invisible. She drove a car whose headlights also projected black light when necessary. Interesting Fact - Her skimpy costume was eventually explained as a deliberate tactic to distract her usually male foes. Reason for Rank: She's smart, dedicated to her craft and most importantly her work in American Intelligence showed great secrecy and allowed her to become more independent in her work against crime and injustice.

I had a black light projector but it only made my Jimi Hendrix poster glow in the dark. Was it artist Matt Baker who redesigned her costume to make it more er.. distracting? I used to own some of those Phantom Lady Fox comics. Great covers

But most of all, I find him a team player and uses mathematical calculations to thwart the forces of evil.

I have fond memories of his initial run in Mystery in Space under the editorship of Julie Schwartz. It was a class SF book for the sophisticated comic book reader of that time. When Schwartz left to take over Batman poor Adam suffered with horrible scripts and pedestrian Lee Elias art. Finally put out of his misery with the exception of guest-starring roles in various books for many years. Never got around to reading his later revival mini series

I mostly love Phantom Lady because of how crazy The Freedom Fighters are. They are a kooky bunch, that's for sure. I love the Earth-X issues of JLA, and The Freedom Fighters series in the 1970s was one crazy comic book.
They were also used very well in All-Star Squadron, and Phantom Lady especially had a few guest-starring roles in that series even before the Freedom Fighters were formed.
The Freedom Fighters idea had a lot of potential, but it's never really been utilized very well.
I have zero interest in any attempt to bring back Phantom Lady in the New 52. (I think they already tried it and failed.) Phantom Lady belongs in the 1940s (although the Phantom lady revival in Action Comics Weekly was one of the best things in that much-maligned experiment. I never did read the conclusion of the Phantom Lady story.)

I am glad Adam Strange made the list. He's one of my favorite Silver Age characters.

Animal Man's first few appearences in Strange Adventures were not so memorable and shame on me for never reading Grant Morrison's version. I did like the Nu52 series. I think what ultimately killed it was the seemingly never-ending opening storyline (It went on for a year and a half if I recall correctly) that might have caused too many readers to bail. A shame because I enjoyed the fact that Buddy Baker was a family man and that was a central part of the series
Vixen? A bland Conway creation and a member of one of the worst JLA teams. I'd rather read Beppo-The Super Monkey stories. Speaking of which I hope you don't exclude some real animal heroes like Krypto,Detective Chimp,Rex The Wonder Dog and others. Vixen isn't worthy to be their pet

Vixen isn't worthy to be their pet I do like the fact the Animal Man used to be played off as a family man first hero second....it added to his depth of character. However I always preferred Vixen over him perhaps just because of the female aspect of the characters power set....I suppose it really depends on who writes the character to bring her to life with be able to given us more in depth reason and rhyme for her to do what she does and to determine the personality the she should have.... I do think in the detroit days there was wasted potential with the character.
