Number 45 - VixenAlter Ego - Mari Jiwe McCabe Team Affiliations - Justice League, Suicide Squad, Checkmate, and Birds of Prey. Plus Ultramarine Corps as well. Created by - Gerry Conway Illustrated by - Bob Oksner Abilities Mimics the abilities of any animal that has ever lived on Earth via necklace, healing factor Interesting Fact - Was a Supermodel in her own rights. Reason for Rank: Because of her abilties to gain powers of any animal (See Abilities) makes her one of the most unique Superhero as long she stay within 150 feet of such animal. Great Combatant and has tremendous fighting skills too. when did the proximity part of her powers come into play...I never recall that aspect for her.....i do seem to recall that Animalman needed to have animals around in order for his power of mimicry to work. Origin - From Comic VineThe mystical artifact called the Tantu Totem is a fox shaped talisman created by the African trickster god Anasi the spider. Originally created for the ancient African warrior Tantu who prayed to the trickster god asking for a totem to allow him mastery over the animal kingdom thereby protecting his people. The Tantu Totem did indeed allow Tantu to access the morphogenetic field and hence adapting his physical human limits to adapt numerous animal traits. Tantu than used the totem to become Africa's first hero and legend. It has been shown in the pages of Animal Man that Anasi may have actually been a member of the alien race who gave Buddy Baker his ability to tap the morphogenetic field. Or it may be that the aliens may have actually been Anasi in disguise as shown in the Justice League. The totem was later passed down to Tantu's descendants until it reached the McCabes. It was previously thought that the totem was the source of Vixen's powers but according to recent stories,it merely prevented Vixen's natural link to the morphogenetic field from overwhelming her mind. It was assumed that the totem also increased her range for mimicking the abilities of animals, as she has been known to mimic the abilities of animals on the other side of the world. From Me ...She has it around her necklace and with that necklace and animals within 150 feet helps Vixen focus her animal mimicry abilities altogether. Hopes this helps.

I don't think animals need to be in any sort of proximity to Vixen as she has been known to use the strength of an elephant, speed of a cheetah, and electrical abilities of an eel in the middle of a large city such as Metropolis. I suppose there could have been a zoo near by but if there was, it wasn't mentioned in any of the stories I read.

I'll comment on a block of them.
#50 WILDCAT
Would he make my top 50? HELL NO! Somebody has to be my least favorite character from Earth-Two and he's it. He was a bland character with an ugly costume. He took up space in the 1970s All-Star Comics that would have been better off given to anyone else and then, to my utter horror, he became popular.
#49 CAPTAIN MARVEL JR.
Would he make my Top 50? He'd probably fall just short, but he's my second favorite character from the Fawcett wing at DC. My favorite one is well up in the Top 10.
#48 PHANTOM LADY
Would she make my Top 50? No. She just makes it into the like zone. My favorite era was when she was in All-Star Squadron.
#47 ADAM STRANGE
Would he make my Top 50? Oh Yes! Top 20 for sure. He's smart, the sci-fi angle, a jet pack, a costume I love and the fin!
#46 ANIMAL MAN
Would he make my Top 50? No. I never really cared for him. I encountered him after I first saw Vixen in the 1990s. He's currently annoying me in Jeff Lemire's underwhelming JLU.
#45 VIXEN
Would she make my Top 50? No, but she'd have a shot at the Top 100. I like the power set and really enjoyed her in the Justice League cartoon. She's definitely moved up in the rankings in the last quarter century for me.

Vixen will always be a longtime favorite because she reminds me of the glory days of Justice League Detroit, when she was joined by Aquaman, J'onn J'onzz, Ralph and Sue Dibny, Zatanna, Steel, Vibe and Gypsy as they protected Earth from folks like Amazo and Despero until the team broke up and some of them were massacred.

Vixen was the shining gem of the JLDetroit new recruits. I feel that she was also fleshed out the best from the newbies. Since then, she's been a part of the Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Metzler's JLA. Pretty good track record for a female African-American hero. DC really needs to do something with her in the New 52.

Number 44 - The SpectreAlter Ego - Jim Corrigan Team Affiliations - Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron Created by - Jerry Siegel Illustrated by - Bernard Bailey Abilities Virtual omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience; Immortality and Knowledge of events before the Crisis on Infinite Earths Interesting Fact - Was a hard-boiled cop and was murdered on his way to an engagement party before he became the Spectre. Reason for Rank: I was in awe of outwardly powers and one of the most powerful DC Comics (mystical) characters; having the ability to imprisoned Doctor Fate in a dimension inside his helmet.

Number 43 - The SandmanAlter Ego - Wesley Dodds Team Affiliations - Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron Created by - Gardner Fox Illustrated by - Bert Christman Abilities Prophetic dreams, Chemist and inventor, Superb athlete, Proficient hand-to-hand combatant, Skilled detective, and Gas mask and gun Interesting Fact - In the early days of his career, the Sandman drives a black 1938 Plymouth Coupe. The car is enhanced with various features to aid Wes in his crusade against crime. Similar to the Black Beauty of the Green Hornet. Reason for Rank: One of the original mystery men of DC Comics and has many similarities of being compared to the Green Hornet and later on took in a sidekick by the name of Sandy i.e. Kato. This is the main reason why I like about the Sandman.

Always enjoyed the Spectre from my first encounter with him in that 2nd JLA/JSA teamup and he's all that stands between Earths 1 and 2 colliding with each other. His Showcase tryout issues and the beggining of his first series were fine as well. But he's a hard character to write since he's practically God. The Golden Age stories I've read were wildly imaginative and over the top. And the Adventure Comics series in the 70s were one of a kind for that decade-he was The Punisher supernatural style. Didn't read the 80s version by Moench but enjoyed the 90s Ostrander series.Thats about as far as I got

This is one of the main reason why I put him on my list of the top 50 DC Comics Characters.

The Sandman had a cool motif and thats about it when he debuted. Simon and Kirby turned him in an imaginative and dynamic character-but thats What S&K are known for. His short run 70s series was just weird. Sandman Mystery Theater however was one of the best mainstream 90s series. Basically if its Kirby or Vertigo the Sandman excels

Those last two would be very high on my list. When we did the favorite characters Christmas at CBR a few years back, Jim Corrigan (though not necessarily The Spectre) made my list. I think Wes did also...though I know that Dian Belmont was in my top five.
Both characters are ones I point too when people say the 90s were the worst time for comics. The Ostrander/Mandrake Spectre and Sandman Mystery Theatre are quite simply as good as comics get.

The Spectre was never better than the first year or so of his series in More Fun Comics. They are so chaotic! The villains are omnipotent psychopaths!
Especially Zor! He's a delight. He's in two stories in the early days and I wish he would show up a little more often.
I also love that story with Oom in All-Star Comics #3. Oom enjoys his work, which is mostly crushing innocent people for no reason except the fun of it.
