When I was leaving the military, I decided to take a shot at a dream and applied to the Kubert School, with the hopes of working in comics. As part of the application process, you had to submit a portfolio and go through an interview with an instructor (in person or via phone, in those ancient days). I drove up there (Dover, NJ), from my duty station, in Charleston, SC and went through the interview with Mike Chen, which was conducted in the school's library. Up on the wall was a painting of Tarzan, battling a crocodile, by Joe Kubert. I was more intimidated by that painting than I was Chen looking through my stuff. I looked up at it, and then looked at my drawings and just thought they looked like a child's rendering, by comparison. Kubert working on a deadline was spectacular; Kubert working on something, on his own timeline was amazing. I did get accepted to the school; but couldn't swing the tuition and fees, as I wasn't eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill, since the Navy paid for my college degree. So, that was that. I could have gotten student loans, I suppose; but the thought of going deep into debt, for something that was a pretty big long shot just didn't make sense, so, I let it go and just continued to draw for my own pleasure. Looking back, I probably had a better shot of using contacts there to try to get in as a writer or editor than an artist; but, who knows? It also didn't help my confidence that the waiting area, before the interview, was decorated with originals and reproductions of graduates and instructors. So, I had been staring at covers and pages from Adam & Andy Kubert, Tim Truman, Steve Bissette and some others. Ironically, my degree is in economics and I have never worked in that field, either, though that might be because I realized it was primarily a load of bollox, after 4 years of supply and demand graphs. John Kenneth Galbraith once said something to the effect that economics gives credence to astrology.

So, I checked to see what the latest Cartoonist Kayfabe videos were and apparently Ed Piskor has been cancelled and Jim Rugg has ended their professional relationship.

I was wondering when that would be mentioned here. I'm on one of the Kayfabe FB groups, and it almost felt over the past week that folks were getting a little fed up with Ed and looking for a chance to dump him. I hope Jim is able to land on his feet. Personally, I'm pissed because Switchblade Shorties is the first of Ed's projects that I've really enjoyed. (I didn't even bother with Red Room -- it just seemed like something I didn't want to subject myself to.)

Same with Tom Scioli, who is the 3rd member of the Pittsburgh triumvirate. I enjoyed the first volume of Hip Hop Family Tree (have never got around to the rest), and thought X Men Grand Design was well done, but didn't really like what I'd read of Red Room

I'll say this much, there's been quite a few channels aping the success of Cartoonist Kayfabe, so it's not a total loss. Though the dynamic with Ed and Jim was special. Ed dug his own grave and found out the hard way that screwing around like he did has consequences

I was often pleasantly surprised at some of the folks Ed and Jim got to sit for an interview.

It being April 1, it's hard to trust reports, but these seem legit. Ed Piskor apparently left a suicide note and his current whereabouts are unknown. Please, if anyone is having thoughts of suicide, please talk to someone, reach out. There will be people who will listen. You can call 988, which is the suicide helpline. Please do it, you are not alone. -M

And I am seeing people who have talked to his family who confirmed that Ed did commit suicide earlier today.
Just kind of speechless right now.

Edit to add: Check in with the people you care about. Let them know. Hearing that can make a difference in a lot of people's lives. You never know what they are going through. Not all struggles are made public.
