(...) In March I found one more: (...) Love the covers to old SF magazines/digests - and to old SF/fantasy paperbacks from the '50s through the '80s, but that's another story altogether. This Amazing SF cover in particular caught my eye, as I really love the late '60s/early '70s pop art poster style - very eye-catching. Mike Hinge art. I think I was all in on this kind of art when it was coming out--Peter Max, Milton Glaser, etc.--but generally dislike it now. It was so "of its time," it got old really quick.

I have these two now (no chance of having them back then; I wasn't yet a connoisseur fine literature at the age of 4 going on 5). Yep, it's too bad there was only two issues before it and the publisher just faded into obscurity - there was some nice illustrations in them, esp. by two guys named Buscema and Simonson. Wonder what ever happened to those fellas...

Oh, yeah, to bring this back to nice-looking SF comic book covers. The first one bridges the gap between SF prose magazines and comics: Followed by one of my favorites of Ditko's many great SF covers: And then one from Aparo (man, too bad he didn't do more SF stories): Weird War Tales was mainly focused on horror, but they did a lot of SF stories, too. And a few nice covers in that genre: Can't do a post without something by Simonson:

I had stacks of those SF/F digests. I remember the Ted White period of Amazing/Fantastic started with a lot of reprints, even reprinting art. Analog was my personal favorite. I always found the J.W. Campbell editorials thought-provoking and looked forward to any James H. Schmitz Telzey Amberdon/Web stories. The Ben Bova reign was still great too, highest quality writers, and the book reviews were always useful. Ted Sturgeon as editor of IF, Worlds Of Tomorrow and Galaxy was also great. '70s Galaxy had some of the earliest Wendy Pini art! Ted White's view of more adventure and looking back also appealed to me though... he later pulled some kind Phil Spector type thing on Harlan Ellison and I still don't know what to think, all kinds of noise about the man in fanzines for a long time, but then same with Ellison. Ellison wrote a lot of junk I feel for the earlier Amazing and Fantastic digests, and not always under pen names, so maybe the dispute began with White not reprinting or buying his work later? White was a sort of Pre-Raphealite only more Pre-Ellison/New Wave, and he later edited Heavy Metal magazine (and it became better for it). Those Kelly Freas covers... Ed Emsh... and Hannes Bok... Wow! Magazine Of Fantasy & Science Fiction had a very high quality of writing, not much in the way of interior illustration though I don't recall, but amazing covers at times.

If there are any fans of the English group XTC here, Andy Partridge put together a unique CD of twelve original instrumental compositions inspired by artist Richard Powers. I really enjoyed it... Bad hands for typing today, change in the weather.

The Bantam Star Trek (original series) adaptations by James Blish. 10 of this series' 12 covers were original art taking the U.S.S. Enterprise crew to some very Mid-Century-style sci-fi novel cover art, with work eventually mirroring the changing style of technology design in sci-fi art of the early 1970s. Star Trek 1 (January, 1967). Cover art by the famed brush behind endless Western art and 60s Aurora monster model kit box covers, James Bama. The piece was originally based on Star Trek's second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", produced for NBC as promotional art, and later sold as posters. Star Trek 2 (February, 1968). First season promotional photo of Captain Kirk & Mr. Spock.
