(I'm not sure if this is the best sub-forum, but considering this is a question that pertains the past...) The complete question would be: who was the best know female superhero among not comics readers before the success of various Marvel-related media? As you know, out there there are people who don't read comics (shocking, I know! ) but who, anyway, even before the success of the various superhero movies, knew at last by name some superhero character..How well know was a particular superhero or group often (if always) wasn't related to how successful were their comics. For examples, Superman was probably the most know superhero ever even when the sales of his comics were abysmal. When in the early '80s X-Men and New Teen Titans were the best selling comics, I doubt then your average not-comics-reader knew who they were or name one of their member... So, when Marvel decided to start their Marvel Cinematic Universe, I remember that there were some concerns about the fact that they decided to give a movie to a relative obscure character outside the comics fandom. So, when a poster in another forum said that Marvel followed the some way with the release of the Captain Marvel movie, a thought struck me: who the heck were the best know Marvel female superheroes before the cinematic euphoria? If I had to guess, probably I would say the Invisible Woman but she is a) a member of a group and b) a character that is licensed to Fox. And then? I have no idea. Perhaps Spider-Woman? Your thoughts?

My answer before the success of the Marvel cinematic universe would be the same as my answer now: Wonder Woman.
Despite their recent box office success, not everybody goes to watch or is interested in superhero films. Female superheroes like Black Widow, Invisible Woman and now Captain Marvel have certainly had their public profiles raised considerably among certain sections of society over the past 10 years, but I doubt my Mum would know those characters. Ditto for my 50-something uncle or my 80+ grandmother. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, yep...they'd all know her, and so too would most people from 8 to 80.

Wonder Woman is THE female superhero by definition Well, you've changed the thread title to reflect that now, but that's not what it said when I replied. You also said, "who was the best know female superhero among not comics readers before the success of various Marvel-related media?" No mention of you only being concerned with Marvel characters there either. I therefore assumed any superhero was eligible. If we're talking Marvel only, before the MCU, I'd probably say Invisible Woman. Although she was really pretty obscure among the general, non-comic reading populace.

Yeah, narrowing the field down to Marvel super-heroines makes it really hard to say. Like Confessor, I'd say Invisible Woman, and maybe also Spiderwoman, based on the fact that they appeared in Saturday morning cartoons - but even then, they were pretty obscure, with nowhere near the recognition Wonder Woman had. In fact, before the Marvel cinematic universe became a thing, even most major Marvel male characters were largely unknown to the wider, non-comics reading public. Basically, it was Spider-man and then, to a far lesser degree, the Hulk (thanks to the TV show). And neither of them were even close to Superman and Batman in that regard.

But I won't discard the Fantastic Four: I admit it's anecdotally, but even before the first movie most of my not-comics reading friends had heard of them

In an absolute sense, none of Marvel's heroines are well known to the general public. But the success of the Avengers films has probably made Black Widow the most famous one currently, portrayed by one of the best known actresses of today. Black Widow is apparently not well known enough to carry her own film, though Scarlett Johannson has made other action movies already.

A little cute anecdote. A dear friend of mine is a psychologist who is working with children with problems. Considering that a lot of them love superheroes movies, she thought that better knowing this subject could help her to better connect with the children. She even said that why a kid chooses this or that hero as a preferred one could be useful to better understand them. The problem is she knew absolutely NOTHING about superheroes, so she asked me a crash course about them. It was a little surreal talking about the origin of The Flash in her studio, while she was taking extensive and perfectly ordered notes... What struck me is, while she obviously knew the "Superman" moniker and she could recognize his costume, she didn't know ABSOLUTELY nothing about him, that he is an alien, has an alter ego and his name is Clark Kent and so on. She even asked a list of movies on the subject and I believe that while I'm typing this she is watching Avenger (while taking extensive and perfectly ordered notes I suppose ) She invited me to watch Captain Marvel together in the week, so I can explain to her all the minutiae about this character...

If you grew up after the mid 1990s, you can probably name Storm, but you don't know anything about how bad-ass the character actually is.

It's incredible how the Wonder Woman tv show is ingrained in the collective consciousness, because I'm sure that before this series the character hadn't been so well known. Now we have supposedly better tv supehero shows but no one of them helped to make its main character so rooted in the popular culture like the Amazon Princess....
