Looks pretty good to me and I think Phoenix will be awesome in the role. My only worry is Todd Phillips as the director. As far as I know he’s strictly been a comedy director with zero experience with dark, gritty dramas. I was trying to figure out why the trailer was giving me these familiar vibes even though I haven't seen it before. Then I realized that my reaction to it was exactly the same reaction I had when I saw the trailer for Venom. The whole thing feels like they took a script that could have been a more generic genre film (sci-fi horror for Venom, psychological thriller for Joker) and shoehorned comic book elements into it in order to cash in on the Marvel or DC connections. I feel like I would actually have more interest if they took all the DC comics elements out of it and just made it a generic thriller about an unhinged comedian. As with Venom, the appeal of Joker is how he stands in contrast to the hero. It's a shame, because it actually looks like a decently made film, but for me they are ruining it by trying to make it a film about a Batman villain without Batman. They've been doing this in the comics for years, now.. it's why continuity is no longer a thing. The companies take pitches from writers, who basically take a story they have in mind and fit it to an existing character, instead of writing the character that exists.

Same as '70s Marvel, then, except nobody had time to take pitches (or edit!) back then. I vastly prefer this system to a more top down, editorially driven system.

What little I've seen doesn't look that good. Err, exactly why? I quite like this early '80s vibe...

That was after the first lackluster trailer.
I'm pumped for it now.

My pro about this film: No sign of Harley Quinn. That's great, I'm more sick of her character than I am of Joker.
My con about this film: No sign of Batman. That doesn't make sense. If you gonna give me a Joker film, I expect Bruce to be present somewhere within it.

Well, well, well... The film has won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. Colour me surprised! Guess I’ll have to see it after all. (But probably on Netflix).

There seems to be a bunch of political-based negativity towards the movie from left-wing circles for reasons I don't quite understand. It... uhrr.. encourages incels?
Kind of like how the right-wing culture warriors hated Captain Marvel and the recent Star Warseses.
It's not exactly the same. The left wing Joker hate is more philosophical and sardonic and less shrill. And with less targeted harrassment of Joker's cast and crew.... so far. But it feels like it's coming from the same psychological roots.
I wonder if this will change when the movie opens and people actually see it?
Like ex-Green Lantern artist Ethan Van Sciver is now this republican youtube guy and (nearly) every day for months before Capatan Marvel opens he would post a video like "BRIE LARSEN JUST DEVOURED ANOTHER ONE OF MY CHILDREN WHOLE WITH HER FILTHY WOMAN MOUTH!.*" And then as soon as the movie was this massive success 90% of the complaining went away.. I kind of predict the same thing for Joker.
* Actual title exaggerated for comedic effect, and also it is impossible that right wing movie hate youtubers could ever think of a title that entertaining.

Best movie I’ve seen in recent memory.
Closest comparison for me is probably Taxi Driver and I’m tempted to put it on that tier, but I’ll need to rewatch it a few times before I make that leap.
Just hand Phoenix the Oscar right now.
