I was going to wait until it's on Blu-ray honestly but the positive reviews have me interested. My girlfriend (who is not into superheroes at all) wants to see it so I might take her this week.

About the incel controversy... Perhaps I'm stupid, but I can't really see how the protagonist is some kind of incel archetype. It isn't like he laments all the time he can't bone someone or the women prefer some "chad" over him. Yes, he fantasizes about a girl who doesn't reciprocate, but I'm quite sure it isn't an exclusively incel thing. If this film came out 20, 10 or just 5 years ago, no one would have said that the protagonist's problems stem from the fact that he can't get laid.

Just spread the word that there might be a mass shooting while you watch the Joker movie and make a fortune from thrill seekers.

The whole thing is absurd The way the media keeps droning on about this movie potentially sparking a mass shooting, it’s almost as if they want it to happen. Some of the reviews are ridiculous. Rambling on about how “dark”, “disturbing” and “ugly” it is and should be avoided at all cost. It’s an origin story about a psychotic killer. What the hell were people expecting? Sunshine and rainbows? Of course this wasn’t going to be a depiction of the jubilant yet nutty Joker spraying acid out of a flower lapel or turning clown fish into weapons. Anyone who was expecting anything even remotely resembling that is a goof and clearly didn’t watch the trailers or notice the R rating. Are we not allowed to have these movies anymore or something?

I think the argument started with "Well, there was a mass shooting at the last Joker movie." Which is a fair point. Any attempts to expand past this into sociological analysis have completely lost me.

I've never understood why people blame media on psychopathic activity...there are adults in the world that want to watch/play stories/game with real life adult themes.. there's nothing wrong with that, and I would argue it's a good thing. (There are many times when pounding the crap out of minions on the computer or Play Station has made me feel better after a stressful day).
It's not the media's fault if some kid with mental issues that has a crappy home life decides to use that media to carry out his power fantasy in real life. No one blames the school when they shoot up a school, or the music if it's a concert.
Getting back on topic, I had no interest in the movie before, and still don't.... the reviews make it sound pretty decent, but it seems like they just pasted the Joker on a plot to sell more tickets, and I HATE that. (I know it happens all the time, I still hate it).

Any attempts to expand past this into sociological analysis have completely lost me. Much like the fact that the media and people in general are bad at science they're generally abominably bad at statistics. Most people seem to be completely incapable of understanding that correlation =/= causation. In this case you don't even have actual correlation, but that never stopped anyone.

Seems like mainly a pretext to write an article on the trendy topic of "incels," or as they used to be called, "bachelors."

Seems like the production company purposely fanned these flames in order to generate more buzz. I've seen the social media ads for the film telling you NOT to bring the kids. Clearly, that's not being done out of some sense of altruism -- they want you to want to see it more.
So here is the real question to those who have seen it: is it really THAT good, or is it just that it's a serious superhero film that doesn't suck? Are people holding it to a lower standard because it's a superhero film, or would the film be just as powerful if the dude didn't end up calling himself "The Joker"?

I imagine that there must have been many movies about people that get pushed around so much that they snap . They just put Joker makeup on this one.

I watched this last night with my girlfriend and thought it is a really well made film and that Joaquin Phoenix gives an exceptional performance. I can see why people gave this a standing ovation at whatever film festival it premiered. If it wasn't connected to the Batman mythos it would still be an interesting film in its own right. It's commentary on how we treat the mentally ill is very poignant. It also echoes the themes of income inequality and classism that I think will also resonate with people as Joker's first slaying inspires protests similar to the Occupy Movement.
I understand why people might worry about this film though as it does an adequate job of trying to get the audience to empathize with Arthur Peck as he is constantly being let down by the society around him, from violence in the streets to the health care system failing to continue his medication and therapy. His delusions and transformation remind me of a lot of others films as some have mentioned already. There are parallels to Scorsese's The King of Comedy (1982) and Taxi Driver (1976), Phoenix's physical performance reminded me of the Francis Dolarhyde character in the Thomas Harris novel Red Dragon. There's literally a disturbing transformation that goes on before our eyes that's pretty scary.
I'll definitely pick up the Blu-ray when it comes out.
