Ugh. Right around the time I stopped reading new comics for nearly 20 years. The 90s broke me.

Somebody else mentioned Shazam: The New Beginning. With Roy Thomas writing, Tom Mandrake drawing, and the original Captain Marvel starring, I thought it was a surefire cinch to please me. I couldn't have been more wrong. It was an ugly, grim 'n' gritty take on the Big Red Cheese that had not one redeeming quality. Never have I read a comic book, then or now, that so completely missed the point of its central character. Ugh!

Just a terribly tone-deaf book that entirely misses the mark. I probably still have the issues in a box somewhere, but I haven't read them since they came out.

Well, send them to me, Slam, because I've never read them. As a kid, I wasn't near a comic store and was dependent on random issues from the local newsagents.

Was it ever conclusively stated that Doom 2099 was "our" Doom? Didn't they imply that future Doom may have simply thought he was "our" Doom? Did they provide an answer one way or the other? I think they did eventually say it was the 'real' Doom (in FF 2099) but I preferred to assume it was not.. just another person using the name. He was different enough that it FELT fresh, as opposed to bringing the actual FF into a new setting. Also, Warren Ellis was writing at the height of his powers (IMO), and who doesn't love it when the bad guy takes over the world?

I'd add Legends... Love the work of the people involved; but, apart from the intro to the Suicide Squad (new version) and the stuff that went on in the Superman titles, it was rather ho-hum, especially given the people involved. They seemed determined to reintroduce Darkseid as a big bad dude, after him barely appearing in Crisis; but, this just got a little too abstract. That right there should have told me to be wary about Millennium; but, I was young(ish-college age) and hopeful. I would also add.... The original was pure gonzo fun; but, this could have been anything (as long as it was dark). Also, the Duotone boards that Byrne was using just looked kind of murky (from memory, haven't looked at it since it came out). I will second Wanderers. I pickled it up after seeing the group in the Great Darkness Saga and was sadly disappointed with it. I stuck with it longer than i should have; but, I abandoned it way earlier than a lot of things from that era (like the disappointing Manhunter series or Starman (Will Payton) and Captain Atom, both of which I stayed with well after I stopped enjoying it. Captain Atom I stopped enjoying by the point Broderick left it; but, stuck around for a bit. Starman was similar, artistically; but, I wasn't overly interested, after the first year.

I rather liked Byrne's Omac series.

So did I. I thought it was the best thing he did post Superman, probably the last good thing he did.

I did not care for Guy Gardner's book and I do agreed that the Shazam book that Kurt really missed the mark here and have mixed feeling of Legends and I did read the whole series twice and after that ... I just didn't care for it at all. It was mildly disappointing in general.

I feel as if I want to defend this series because I was right there from issue #1 and bought the title off of the newsagent's shelves. But, you know what? You're right...it was pretty boring. Although I will say that some of the characters were certainly memorable. Floronic Man was a striking mixture of plant and human, while Extraño was not only pretty obviously gay, but HIV Positive too -- both of which were pretty groundbreaking and progressive for a comic in 1987.

I remember being really jazzed for the 1982 Silver Surfer one-shot by John Byrne and Stan Lee and coming away disappointed. It wasn't bad and I didn't hate it, but it could've, should've been so much more.
Cei-U! I summon the big letdown!

Madame Xanadu. Matt Wagner is one of my favorite writers, but this never seemed to go anywhere and the artwork, while fine for the first installment, helped portray the character as an eternal ingénue (a trope I despise). The crossover with Sandman Mystery Theatre drawn by Kaluta was great; the rest of the series I gave away. Honestly, I can't think of a single other series I kept buying for so long, while obtaining no pleasure in it. I kept expecting it to improve.
