There are so many ways to store and classify a comic book (or any other kind of) collection but when it comes down to thinning out a collection there is only ONE SURE FIRE WAY of doing so.
Being Burglarized and having your stuff stolen. I took last week off to visit a friend in another city and help him pack up his belongings to move to another state and came home after 4 days away to find my home broken into while I was away.
A quick review of what the thieves took: 12 long boxes of comics, 30+ framed and signed art prints, over 50+ Funko Pop's collectible figures, 50+ Marvel Legend's collectible figures, a bunch of DVD's/VHS tapes, lots of Hot Wheel's on the cards hanging on my wall for display and an Amazon Kindle E-reader. I have not even begun to try and sort out the mess. Thieves even took 2 extension cords for my electric lawn mower, 2 shovels and 2 rakes and weed trimmer. They ransacked the house, emptying every closet, every cabinet and drawer while throwing clothes and stuff all throughout the house. You couldn't even see the floors in my home. I cannot describe the pain and knots carried inside my stomach and mind this weekend. The anxiety and worry over leaving my home empty for work today has me feeling physically ill. I haven't the strength to dig into and listing all of the specifics of items stolen. Not even gone into the bedroom where I store my comic books to try and figure out what boxes of comics were taken.
Police would not even come out to investigate, simply taking information for a report over the phone and giving me a case # for reference. None of my neighbors saw or heard anything. It looks like it happened during the middle of the night early in the week. Thieves must have parked a truck in my driveway and broke out the carport sheet-rock roofing and then climbing into the side storage laundry room connected to the side of my home. Then they went into the back yard to physically remove/breaking out a window air-conditioning unit bolted/hung in my back master bedroom. Had to be several people in order to get the amount of stuff out, since I know that 12 long boxes is NOT an easy or quick item to try and steal away with by taking them from a front bedroom all the way through the house and out the back door to loading into the vehicle.
One SMALL glimmer of HOPE though was that when I left this morning I found an envelope left on my cars windshield wiper blade. A letter from an unknown source (a neighbor?) who says they "KNOW" who stole my things and even gives me the NAME and ADDRESS of the thief. So I called the Police once I was at work and provided them the information and all I was told is that the information would be looked into. Will it really?!?
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this method for thinning out a lifelong collection...
