I think Sal's a good artist. My main complaint is the way he draws mouths, but otherwise I think he's a very solid "reliable artist" who's drawn an awful lot of comics in my longboxes.

There is a reason for Sal Buscema being Marvel's go to person for so many years, and that is exactly what folks here have been saying about him. The characters are instantly recognizable, he can tell a story and deliver the action/heroics, his layouts are great with their smooth/clean/distinct style and Sal never felt the need to jazz up or enhance or change what the writer's story was. Sal could take a mediocre story and still make it something worth reading. His responsibility was to fill the gap and deliver the publisher's need without losing or turning away readers. Sal' issues were always fun, energetic and great filler which most reader's wouldn't refuse to buy when flipping through an issue at the stands and NOT finding the usual creative team inside.

And Sal did fine work on the books where he was the regular artist, Like Hulk, Rom and Spectacular Spider-Man.

Not calling Sal B. a bad artist per se, but everyone else on the list (at their best) was better than anything I've seen from Sal. B - unless the inker came by with a trowel and just completely overpowered/improved Sal's pencils. Novick and Mooney at the top of that list. At their best, they were solid "Silver medalists" in the Greatest Comic Artist Olympics. On the other hand, Sal was one of the most "regular" or pedestrian artists of Marvel's heyday. His work reminded me of the kind of basic "superhero" art that would be used on generic packaging of random products; it was not the defining, standout work--the same kind of work that represented the company / characters the public, and used as licensing art.

I also voted "Other". Does Ross Andru count? I wold say yes, and he's a good choice. A couple of other people mentioned Keith Pollard and I think he's another very good choice. Then Andru would also be my vote for 'Other'. His work on Spider-Man alone is just as defining to me as Romita's. My other 3 votes are for Swan (definition of classic), Trimpe (so underrated) and Norvick for I've grown to really like Norvick's work on the Flash.

His Peter Parker, Mary Jane, Flash, Gwen, are all instantly recognizable. Plus, he had a certain quirkiness that was all his own. I also loved his work on Kull #1. Just brilliant work.

Irv Novick is either the Sal Buscema of DC, or the Don Heck, except DC had Don Heck sometimes, so I guess he is the Our Pal Sal of DC.

Novick never drew a book I didn't like. As for Sal, He is really head and shoulders above the rest of the pack with the possible exception of Swan. He drew almost 100 issues straight of the Hulk and had long runs in Captain America, Rom and Defenders.

We (others who read comics at the time and me) hated Don Heck's art. We called him Don Hack. His work never had the dynamic feel of the other Marvel artist. Always a let down when he took over an issue from Kirby or Colan or Buscema. His faces looked weirdly Asian, his figures were sometimes awkward and there was a blandness to his panels. The internet has revealed to me that his earlier work was quite good, so for me I guess he never fit with the Marvel style.

How does Jim Aparo fit in, both good and reliable. And one of the few mainstay artist who usually inked himself.
(Though Sal was able to do that on his run of Spectacular Spider-Man.)

Sometimes Sal's characters gaped in awe a little too wide, but I think he was an excellent artist. I bought Rom from #1 for years and liked his Hulk. I kind of didn't like Carmine Infantino so much in the late '70s and '80s depending on the inker... Steve Leialoha could save him on a Spider-Woman or Team-Up, but in Star Wars Gene Day was just a modest improvement on Bob Wiacek (who was great on other pencillers)... I never could get used to a Carmine Infantino R2-D2 or Chewbacca! Irv Novick's Flash I bought along with Jim Aparo's Batman when I bought no other DCs, so I'm guessing I thought they were a good read.
