Number 33 - Spider-WomanAlter Ego - Jessica Drew Team Affiliations - Avengers, New Avengers, and Secret Avengers Created by - Archie Goodwin Illustrated by - Marie Severin Abilities Superhuman strength, speed and agility, Flight, Fear-inducing pheromone generation, Adheres to walls through bio-electric attraction, Shoots beams of bio-electric energy from her hands, and Resistance to all poisons and radiations Interesting Fact - Spider-Woman was identified as the human Jessica Drew (combining the first name of Wolfman's daughter and the last name of fictional detective Nancy Drew) Familiarity Rating - 10 Reason for Rank: To me, Jessica Drew's feelings of isolation from other people were a major theme of the first year and a half of her series. Because of that, is one of the many reasons why I like her because she wants to make it out of her own and having said that she has to think hard about going into battle and that alone makes her unique. Her ability to resist all poisons and radiations is a big plus in her series.

I've got the first (only?) Spider-Woman Essential, but haven't gotten around to it. I'd like to see a team-up mini with her and Captain Marvel.

Familiarity Rating - 10 Reason for Rank: One of the better all-around superheroes around and certainty needed in many teams that he's well regarded in the ranks of Marvel Universe. Number 31 - The Mighty ThorAlter Ego - Thor Odinson Team Affiliations - Asgard, Avengers, and couple other minor teams as well Created by - Stan Lee with Larry Lieber assisting Illustrated by - Jack Kirby Abilities Superhuman durability, longevity, speed, and strength, Abilities via Mjolnir: Dimensional transportation, Electric manipulation, Flight, and Weather manipulation. Interesting Fact - Marvel filed for a trademark for "The Mighty Thor" in 1967 and the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued the registration in 1970 Familiarity Rating - 10 Reason for Rank: One of the strongest and mightiest Marvel Superhero to date and one of the corniest superheroes around. Sorry, to say that because I just can't stand the text in all the earliest Avengers Comic Books because the Wasp was keep telling it's doesn't matter how corny he talks - he's so handsome and dreamy! That's why I just can't put him any higher than Number 31 and I just have too many issues with the God of Thunder. That's my honest and sincere evaluation of this iconic Marvel Character.

#34 Sasquatch (Walter Langkowski) - does not make my Top 50, but would probably be in the Top 75-80. Walter's an interesting character, but since I'm not overly fond or familiar with Alpha Flight, he just can't rank higher for me.
#33 Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) - she's a little lower on my list, coming in at #37. Her solo book was a little bit of a mess due to the ever-changing creative teams, and then she disappeared for a while, but Jessica has been a steady presence in the MU for a number of years in titles like The New Avengers.
#32 Beast (Henry McCoy) - Mama McCoy's Bouncing Baby Boy springs onto my list at #17, as he's my second-favorite X-Man of all-time. The hirsute Hank was not only a founding member of the X-Men, but he also spent years as a valued member of both X-Factor and Avengers. It was his advanced vocabulary and jovial spirit in the face of his physical abnormalities (first his "beastlike" appearance, then later his Cookie Monster look) that drew me to him.
#31 Thor - The God of Thunder ranks much higher on my list, as he's my #3 favorite Marvel Superhero. Having grown up reading lots of mythology before I ever got into superhero comics, I was familiar with many of the characters in Thor's book when I first picked it up. I got into the book later in the run, so I missed on the classic Lee/Kirby issues (I've since gone back and acquired them in one form or another), and while he hit some hard times due to lackluster creative teams (Walt Simonson's run notwithstanding), Thor has been a major player in the MU for a long time with his association with the Avengers as well as his own solo books.

Hank McCoy, the Beast, comes in at 35, but I prefer the blue furry look he had in Avengers where I first encountered him, and Thor clocks in at #13 for me. Jessica Drew just missed he cut on my list.

I for one salute Doctor Fate's inclusion of the Alpha Flight characters. I'm always baffled when people seem to think they're mediocre since I feel they're superior to some of the more overrated heroes out there. I can only assume that this is because said people haven't actually read Byrne's run or there is simply a bias against harry Canadians.

It's posssibly just becasue they were never as mainstreamed as other characters, so less exposure to them.

. . .there is simply a bias against harry Canadians. "Trebor, I served with Harry Canadians. I knew Harry Canadians. Harry Canadians was a friend of mine. Trebor, you're no Harry Canadians."

Number 30 - Colossus Alter Ego - Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin Team Affiliations - X-Men, The Defenders, X-Force Created by - Lee Wein Illustrated by - Dave Cockrum Abilities Ability to transform his body into "organic steel" granting him superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. Trained acrobat and swordsman (As Juggernaut): Additional superhuman strength and resistance to injury, and Unstoppable momentum
Note to All: His ability in italics - I had to share this but I've no idea how he became the Juggernaut. Interesting Fact - Peter was part of the second generation of X-Men, formed by Charles Xavier to save the original X-Men from the living island Krakoa. He agreed to leave the farm community in which he was born to go to the United States with Xavier. Xavier gave him the name "Colossus." After the battle was won, Colossus remained in the United States with the new X-Men Familiarity Rating - 10 as Colossus, 2 as Juggernaut Reason for Rank: Colossus is typically portrayed as being peaceful, selfless, reluctant to hurt or kill anyone, and always putting himself in danger to protect others. Having said this he's one of the most loyal and dedicated X-Men around and uses his abilities to further aid the X-Men and the groups that he was dedicated to. That's why I like him so much.

Number 29 - Power Man - Luke CageAlter Ego - Carl Lucas Team Affiliations - Avengers, New Avengers, and Mighty Avengers, The Defenders, and several other teams as well. Well-Traveled Superhero. And, two stints as Hero for Hire. Created by - Archie Goodwin Illustrated by - John Romita Jr. Abilities Superhuman strength, stamina and durability, Unbreakable skin is highly impervious to damage and temperature. He has also studied martial arts under Iron Fist's instruction, learning how to couple leverage with his strength in order to increase his combat effectiveness against more powerful opponents. Interesting Fact 2 - Great friend of Iron Fist. Familiarity Rating - 10 Reason for Rank: One of the most dynamic Marvel Superhero around, tough and a genuine Powerhouse with the capacity to do the most damage against his opponents. He's doesn't back down from the fight and willing to take on anyone including the Incredible Hulk on couple of occasions. Man, this guy can fight!

I can only assume that this is because said people haven't actually read Byrne's run or there is simply a bias against harry Canadians. The main reason I don't like them is I did read Byrne's run, it's the only run of Alpha Flight I read and aside from the Asgardian Wars X-Men story, the only Alpha Flight I cared to check out. It was flat, uninteresting and the characters did nothing to pique my interest and a lot of that falls on Byrne's shoulders. And since I am of Canadian descent and quite hairy, I don't have a bias against that aspect either. Medocre is about the best I would say about Byrne's run and that would be be me being generous. -M

Number 29 - Power Man - Luke Cage I would have reversed it to "Luke Cage, Power Man," but other than that I have no criticisms. Hyper-masculine, a hero who exults in his abilities, many of which were apparent in his character well before Dr. Burstein's prison experiments. A hero with his mind on his money (honey) and his money on his mind. Christmas, what a great pick!
