Good writers and artists can effectively convey terror and horror without showing a single panel of gratuitous gore. This isn't limited to the comics medium either, it applies to all of the visual and literary arts. If done correctly, implied off-panel or shielded perspective violence can be so much more effective (when the story calls for it) than graphic displays, as it allows the reader's mind to conjure their own images to complete the mental picture. Unfortunately, there's been a dearth of good creators for about 10 years now, and given the perspective of current upcoming "instant gratification" generations, I don't expect that situation to improve.
As far as "most violent" goes, well, Rob Liefeld's work makes me pretty violent-- violently ill.
Thank God for musty old classic comics.
