And then there's this really obvious one (can't believe I didn't think of it sooner):

Most cool, Farrar !! To which I will add this cover, where Julius Schwartz (I'm guessing) is willing to take a bit of a risk, but not as big a one as Stan did: Ah, this is a great one, Hal!This is the perfect exception that dispels the "rule" (for the 1960s timeframe I mentioned back in my post). Schwartz certainly knew the JLA audience contained older readers who were well-versed in the 1940s-50s comics. And as a concession to the less well-versed "kiddie" audience segment, he still hedged a bets a bit by labeling the characters and providing familiar names "Green Lantern", "The Atom", and "The Flash" even if the visuals weren't of the Silver Age versions. It also shows just how popular those annual JSA appearances were in the JLA book back then.

This was in 1949, the end of the old guard of superhero titles, and Marvel made a quick transition to the horror comics that had begun to take over the newsstands. Cap wouldn't reappear in his own book for about five years.

All kinds of old '40s Daredevil comics with the Little Wise Guys and no Daredevil at all. Yes, after issue 49, DD disappeared, except for his name, until the end of the run (#107) in 1957. Another post-war casualty of the waning interest in super-heroes.

If there's one run I know well, it's the first one I ever assembled at the tender age of nine. There's even more covers without Batman if you count ones where only his silhouette is shown: And what about the Superman Funeral for a Friend and Reign of the Superman issues, as well as Batman's Knightquest, KnightsEnd, and Prodigal?

I'd also suggest looking at Phantom Stranger, where for much of the run, it was only a silhouette or a shadow of PS that we saw. Many of these were drop-dead gorgeous Aparo covers.

Not a single penis on that cover.

Not a single penis on that cover. I don't know. Man-Thing's nose (if that is his nose) is pretty phallic.
