Are the old Superman newspaper strips any good? There's a hardcover at the neighborhood bookstore priced pretty cheap. I think it's the Sunday strips from 1939-43.

If it's cheap and in good shape it's probably worth getting anyway. Strip books retain their value pretty well, so you aren't going to be out much if you don't like it.

Well, I got it -- Superman: Sunday Classics 1939-1943 (Sterling Publishing edition, 2nd printing, c2006)-- for $6 in store credit. The dustjacket is a little scuffed on one of the corner edges, but otherwise it's in great shape. I am trying to desperately to downsize, so I brought in Essential Spider Man Vol2 and Essential Classic X-Men Vol 2 for trade/sale (I tend to split the payoffs there between cash and credit). The former I'd like to read in color if I ever read it again and the latter I don't have much interest in rereading. I also traded in a Birds of Prey TPB I picked up around the time the TV series was on, and a TPB of Star Wars Chapter II as well as several non-comic books; both mine own and others accumulated by family over decades, as I'm helping my parents downsize as well. I still have $40+ credit pending there for now.

Six bucks sounds like a good price. I've been interested in getting more strip collections lately, but the non humor ones take me forever to get through.

Anyone have any opinions on Ordway's 'Power of Shazam!' series? I'm mildly interested in checking it out after the crossover with Starman Love that series. Why this isn't traded up is a darn shame. Love Da Ordster! Anyone have any opinions on Ordway's 'Power of Shazam!' series? I'm mildly interested in checking it out after the crossover with Starman Start with the Power of Shazam! graphic novel. It was one of my favorite series of the 1990s. I liked it even more than Starman.
That hardcover is getting tougher to find. I was able to find a cleaner copy of the HC for a reasonable price. I too, am In the minority that didn't care for Starman that much.

I'll be doing some downsizing later as I duplicate purchases in digital.

I'm enjoying Starman so far, but I definitely don't think it's one of the best runs of all time, as many do. It's really very much an ensemble book, which is fun and unique, and the emphasis on history and legacy is cool, but it's not super amazing or anything.
It would really be much more correct to call it 'Opal City Adventures' (though of course that wouldn't work for marketing). I'm up to about issue 60, and there have been at least 10 that Jack Knight isn't in at all (or makes as small cameo).. and several more where he's a bit player.

It's really very much an ensemble book, which is fun and unique, and the emphasis on history and legacy is cool, but it's not super amazing or anything. Keep in mind when this series was coming out. The first issue came out in 1994, right at the height of the Image-inspired bad art, speculation craze. Imagine going to the comic store and getting a bunch of that crap and then reading Starman. Mind. Blown. It wasn't just that the series is really good, it's that it was so different and so much better than most of the other stuff coming out at the same time. In 2014 it might not seem all that amazing, but in 1994 it was absolutely fantastic.

Is any of the post Death of Superman Action Comics/Superman stuff any good, roughly from 1993-2000? Funeral of a Friend and Reign of the Superman should not be missed. I can go up to Zero Hour and still like the Triangle Era. In 1996 Superman Adventures, based on the cartoon, came out. It was easily the best Superman monthly title for the rest of its existence.
