The writing is kind of awful compared to Drake's - There's really no differentiation in the way the characters talk (rhythm of the dialog, word choice)for instance - but there are a lot of really neat ideas. I like it a lot overall.

I'm wondering about Morrison's Doom Patrol. This is relevant stuff I've read. first half of Drake's Doom Patrol - Love it. All-Star Superman - Another favorite. Actually made me like Superman. We3 - Remember nothing specific, but feel like I liked it. Flex Mentallo - I thought this was good. New X-Men - I enjoyed this well enough. Sea Guy - Didn't understand it. some Bat-stuff (pre and post-Flashpoint) - I liked the pre-Flashpoint stuff a little more, but still not among my favorite Batman. maybe the first five or six issues of Invisibles - Not a fan, at all. Animal Man - Good enough that I bought the omnibus. Not good enough that I re-read it. first trade of Morrison's Doom Patrol - I read this years before anything else on this list. Like We3 I don't remember specifics, but have good feelings. I'm not sure those aren't colored by my enjoyment of the original, though. I actually thought Morrison was going to be one of the all-time greats after Doom Patrol and Animal Man but he ended up doing too much navel gazing. I still don't get the last few issues of Invisibles. All-Star Superman was a pleasant surprise. I've really enjoyed the navel gazing. Morrison is one of my all time favorites and I've never read any of his Vertigo work.

It's probably Morrison's finest hour in Big Two superhero comics.

I'm wondering about Morrison's Doom Patrol. This is relevant stuff I've read. I love love love it. Personally I think its one of the very best things Dc ever published and Richard Case's art is really nice all the way through. However, if you read the first trade and it didnt grab you immediately then the rest might not either.

There are certain bells I like to ring here, Gene Day, The Severins, Conan, Steve Gerber and I'll add Morrison's Doom Patrol to that list. I'm drawing a large air heart with my hand for it right now.

Invisibles and the Filth... I dunno man... if that isn't philosophical mumbo-jumbo at its worst then I don't know what is.
All-Star Superman was a very warm comic. It read like a friend telling me a story about Superman.

I only have a few issues of Morrisons Doom Patrol here and there, but I loved his JLA, Animal Man and We3, very much liked his Sebastion 0, All Star Superman, Flash and others, and even his misses are at least ambitious. I do generally prefer his early stuff...

Finally got around to starting on the X-Statix omnibus I picked for cheap a couple of years ago. Read the first 5 issues and, apart from some nice Allred art, nothing at all really grabbed me and I found the writing/characters incredibly dull. Does it take a while to find it's feet, or are the early issues indicative of what to expect for the rest of the run?

It's been a while since I read it, and even then I only got to around the title change/re-launch. I liked what I read more than you, but no, I don't think it ever drastically improved from the early issues.

For medical and statistical reasons I have to ask: are you human and/or have died in the past twenty years? 'Cause if you don't love X-Statix, I'm not sure you can love comics.

With Michelinie Iron Man run (116-157) and West Coast Avengers (Stern's mini and the first 41 issues of the ongoing), is one considerably better than the other? I have Amazon credit and no self-control.

I have Amazon credit and no self-control. WCA is... well, the first 25 issues of the ongoing are very interesting. There's some mature subtext going on that I think is unusual for mainstream superhero books. But it's buried a bit by the mediocre-to-bad art from Al Milgrom. If you have a tolerance for Milgrim's most pedestrian art, then the stories from Englehart are worth a read. But the art really brings down what might otherwise be considered a pretty significant run. #26-41 range from okay to absolutely terrible. I wouldn't. Englehart does have something to say with the Mockingbird subplot, but the main stories are so bad it's probably not worth it.

Even though I was a big WCA fan back in the day, I'd skip the omnibus, and pick up the volumes for Lost in Space-Time and Zodiac Attack. You'll save quite a bit of money that way, especially if you go through the marketplace. That's the best span of issues in the run. Zodiac Attack also includes WCA Annual 2 and Avengers Annual 16, which is one of my favorite Avengers stories. (Unfortunately, it also includes Milgrom's solo WCA issue with the "Composite Avenger", the beginning of a very poor span of stories for the title.)
(I actually like Milgrom finished by Joe Sinnott. It has a classic feel.)

I've never encountered a Golden/Silver/Bronze Age artist I strongly disliked. Most of the art I dislike involves fairly recent developments.
Just looked up "Composite Avenger". Holy crap that thing is magnificent.
