What are the best Captain America runs prior to Brubaker's? The Englehart-Our Pal Sal era is fantastic.
The Kirby comeback (193-214) has to be read for its shear exuberance.
The Stern-Byrne run is as good as everyone says it is.
The Steranko issues are three of the best illustrated comics in the history of the medium.
Silver Age Lee-Kirby Cap is quite fun. The Sleepers, The Cosmic Cube, Modok, The Black Panther. I like it.
But nobody has mentioned the Colan Cap. I really like those issues (116 to 137). I like it when Gene does superheroes which he rarely did. The issues inked by Joe Sinnott and #127 inked by Wally Wood are terrific. The Colan-Wood pairing is every bit as good as one would have hoped it would be.
I never really dug the Gruenwald era nor the Mike Zeck era. It was hard for me to see Zeck's pencils on Cap without wishing they were inked by Gene Day.

I know it's blasphemy, and I admire Gruenwald tremendously as an editor and fan and Squadron Supreme, but I really dislike his Cap.
Other than that, all of the aforementioned Cap runs are really good.

Ok, that's definitely negative points.
I can't imagine how that would happen.
I'd let Stern do any series, any way, he wanted. He's that good.

I wasn't reading Marvel by the time Guenwald became prominent there but the few things I've looked at everything I've heard about him and his work gives me the impression that he's exactly the kind of fan turned writer I dislike. Of course, I'm prejudiced against him because from what I understand he's one of many writers who screwed up the Eternals after Kirby's series was cancelled.
However, I might look at his Squadron Supreme series some day - that's the only thing of his that sounds the least bit interesting to me.

Squadron Supreme is definitely the best thing he had done in comics. It's clumsy in places, but it is still one of the best examinations of what superheroes could do if they actually set out to change the world. I particularly like the issue that focuses on Tom Thumb.

I will second my joy for the Colan issues...some of the art during these is great! I only have about 6-7 issues from that time but I enjoyed them all.

I'm wondering about Morrison's Doom Patrol. This is relevant stuff I've read.
first half of Drake's Doom Patrol - Love it. All-Star Superman - Another favorite. Actually made me like Superman. We3 - Remember nothing specific, but feel like I liked it. Flex Mentallo - I thought this was good. New X-Men - I enjoyed this well enough. Sea Guy - Didn't understand it. some Bat-stuff (pre and post-Flashpoint) - I liked the pre-Flashpoint stuff a little more, but still not among my favorite Batman. maybe the first five or six issues of Invisibles - Not a fan, at all. Animal Man - Good enough that I bought the omnibus. Not good enough that I re-read it. first trade of Morrison's Doom Patrol - I read this years before anything else on this list. Like We3 I don't remember specifics, but have good feelings. I'm not sure those aren't colored by my enjoyment of the original, though.

I think it's the second big story, "The Painting that Ate Paris", that's Grant's best work on the title, but the whole thing is worth reading.

Grant's Doom Patrol is what sold me on him as a writer-the arc Fanboy Stranger mentioned-The Painting that Ate Paris in particular. I was a huge Morrsion fanboy for a few years after that, until he went off the rails for me later. I haven't liked anything he's done in years, but I still have great affection for the Doom Patrol run and some of the great characters he created for it. The Scissormen still haunt my nightmares and Crazy Mary is still one of the great concepts for a super-powered character, and there was always some part of me that was disappointed I never found Danny the Street when I was wandering around new cities....

It's a damn shame Morrison never lived up to his potential.

I actually thought Morrison was going to be one of the all-time greats after Doom Patrol and Animal Man but he ended up doing too much navel gazing. I still don't get the last few issues of Invisibles. All-Star Superman was a pleasant surprise.
