Tell me about Atari Force. I've heard good things, but nothing particularly specific.

Tell me about Atari Force. I've heard good things, but nothing particularly specific. It's a good sci-fi series, and certainly better than any video game licensed comic has any right to be. It's a little bit Micronauts, little but Star Wars, even a little Star Trek with its exploration, but really it's Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez drawing the hell out of a sci-fi comic.

I'm currently in the process of reading those JSA books, have finished the first 50 or so, and in general would have to say they are good solid superhero fare. Theres nothing spectacular, but nothing godawful either. Mind you this is becoming the mantra for most of what I've read of late, good, solid, but nothing worldbreaking. Its a damn shame cos I always loved me some JSA, and to be fair Johns et al do too, they drip fanboy juice, and while theyre a bit more lively than Thomas's All-Star Squadron, they wont redefine the genre.
Oh well at least its not poke my eyes out offensive.

Tell me about Atari Force. I've heard good things, but nothing particularly specific. The best space opera I've read in comics. J. L. Garcia-Lopez at his best...then Ed Barretto at his best...and the two of them together as well. Gerry Conway's best writing in comics. Marginally dated designs on very well defined characters. Strong female characters. Alien characters that act alien. And the characters are diverse.

Haven't read much Johns but my impression is much as Reptisaurus describes: a guy who hasn't read much outside of comic books - and a very narrow range of American superhero comics at that. One of these days, if he takes over a series or character that I like, I might give it a try, but from what I've seen of Darkseid, for example, in previews of his JLA series, I don't think he's my kind of writer at all. He'll be doing Darkseid War coming up this summer, so you may just want to avoid even doing a Google search for Darkseid for the next two years.

Tell me about Atari Force. I've heard good things, but nothing particularly specific. What Slam said and it's cheap to pick up the back issues of the main series. The mini comics are another matter. I still need one to complete my collection.

I wish they'd reprint the original video game booklets...

Luckily, the mini-comics aren't really necessary to enjoy the main series. The mini-comics take place 20 years before the regular series begins, and the events in the mini-comics are alluded to and set up events in the regular series. But the pertinent info is all covered in flashbacks. To put it another way, the mini-comics are interesting for Atari Force fans to read, but I don't think anyone would become an Atari Force fan if they started with the mini-comics. They're just okay at best, while the regular series is fantastic. Great art, great writing, a fantastic cast of characters and aliens with interesting designs. And one of the great female badasses in comics. 11 year old me definitely needed to cover certain embarrassing anatomical areas with a math textbook when he thought about Dart.

Atari Force had some of the best covers in comics at the time. I remember (we had adverts for it in the back of the dutch version of Marvel Star Wars comics) and those covers always looked great. Would be years before I finally got around to buy the series myself (luckily the dutch translation company did some form of proto-trades where all issues of a year where collected in a single omnibus. A few hundred pages for the price of 3 or 4 issues.)

Oh well at least its not poke my eyes out offensive. You're right on all points, and yet I love all that Earth 2 stuff, old and new alike, and JSA was one of my must reads the entire time up to the last arc that Paul Levitz wrote. Not horrible, but not good IMO. Even Perez's normally electrifying art couldn't do much to help it out.

I remember trading the complete run of Atari Force about 20 years ago and now regret (like I do a lot of trades later on).
Will pick this up again eventually.
DC really should reprint it but probably won't.

Last I checked the Atari name was owned by WB.
Update : Was owned, as in the past tense. WB sold the rights in '98. Well, that pretty much kills a possible reprint.
Will be looking for the back issues.

Tell me about Atari Force. I've heard good things, but nothing particularly specific. What everyone else has said. It's excellent. Really, really well worth your time reading. I loved it back when it was coming out and I still rate it very highly nowadays too. It's also very cheap to pick up and is only 20 issues long, plus an annual. There are the original video game comics from a few years earlier too, but they aren't needed to enjoy the main DC series.

It seems like something IDW might be interested in, and they have a great relationship with DC. I'm not sure what JLGL's relationship with his original art is, but if he's held on to it or collectors are willing to share, JLGL is prime material for an Artist's Edition, which would sweeten the effort to attain the license.
