Rather than re-hash the Colletta debate, let's all take one more look at this earlier entry. When we grant the artist the courtesy of a critique based on his best work rather than his lesser efforts, I think most of us will agree he produced some very high quality inking. This cover is stunning; Colletta's inks really nailed the "crumbling" texture of the backgrounds, did some fine effects on the smoke, gave some masterfully lush contouring to Thor's muscles, and achieved very effective contrast and depth: Most of the criticism of Colletta does not come from the quality of his inking. Though some might not like his style, most agree he did fine work. I for one think his style fit Thor perfectly. And though I loved Royers work on Kirby, Colletta looked good on those early New Gods books. We are not talking about Paul Reinman or George Roussos, who butchered Kirby's work. EXCEPT, his erasures and simplifications are not forgivable. He changed Kirby's work in ways that made it weaker. And no excuses about deadlines or low pay are acceptable when other inkers like Gioccioa or or Stone or Sinnott or Everett did wonderful inking on Kirby at the same time.without the short cuts.

kirby101 posted my favorite. Thanks, but do we vote for the contest starters? Doesn't seem fair to win your own contest.

I don't really have a second placer because I like that one so much. It used to be on my crazy fantasy early potentially affordable early Marvels want list (with FF #16, TtoA #44 and Amaz. S-M #7). It was the basis for this collected edition cover:

Oooof! So many good covers but I'm going with Tarkintino and the iconic DD 43 cover.
Hon Mention to everyone. I swear it gets tougher each week with these contests.
And... Taxi! *whistles*

Tough choices but have to go with MDG. Love all the poses on the cover plus that beautiful Latverian background!
