Here's something I thought of- Many years ago when I was married to my first wife, she was a Sergio Aragones Groo the Wanderer fan. I went and bought up almost all of the issues in one particular comic shop. The shop owner was literally shaking his head in disbelief. Any way, I have all of the 120 issue Epic run except these three (96, 102, 118). A quick look on eBay has # 118 the cheapest for 11.95, #102 for 4.95 and I can't even find # 96.

On a related note, the 2002 Catwoman series suffers from this in spades-Adam Hughes took over as cover artist mid-series and all the issues with his covers are super-pricey, but there is nothing on the insides that warrants greater demand or higher prices, so the run of his covers makes it very expensive to complete the series in single issues, while the early issues by Darwyn, the entire Brubaker run etc. are all more highly regarded for content but easily found and affordable. -M That's why I got his Cover Run book.

Whatever issue of John Byrne's Next Men that has the first appearance of Hellboy. It's always removed from "sets" to be sold separately.

It took me a long time to track down affordable copies of Vigilante #17 and #18: the two Alan Moore scripted issues. While that is at least understandable, I also was missing #39 and #42 for a long time. There is nothing special about these issues, and they are affordable when they do show up, but they just never seemed to turn up in back issue bins. Funny that you mention that. #39 and #42 were the last two issues that I needed to complete the run. I've had 39 for a few months, but I just picked up #42 last week.

In trying to build a run of this series, I've found that this issue is likely to be the most expensive. Apparently because in a metaphysical series such as this, O'Neil shot for the moon here by having Vic buy a copy of the Watchmen trade paperback. I've found the rest of the series' issues to be affordable, from couple of bucks to perhaps $4, maybe $5. A recent search on eBay for this issue though has copies starting off around $25 and up. The cheapest slabbed copy currently is for $90 with other slabbed copies being $100 or more. Huh. Who knew? I paid $1.75 for the copy that's in a box with the rest of them. Talk about a bargain then. That's why I stay with local searches for it instead of ye ol' interweb sources.

That's definitely true.. some of this weird stuff can be ducked in a local shop... not everyone knows about such things, and I'm sure not every shop owner looks up every back issue in their possession.

In a way it's comforting to know it was not just me. I wonder what it is about those two issues? I made a mistake, the final issue I needed was #47 (Batman appearance), not #42. However, 39 was definitely the next-to-last issue that I needed, I remember that distinctly as it was the part of the child slavery ring storyline. But as I recall, the last 20 or so issues were more difficult to come by in general, perhaps because of reduced print runs typical in a title's "twilight years". Even the Annual issues were easier to find.

Has anyone tried to put together runs that didn’t have expensive issues killing the collection ? Is Rom or Marvel Two in one hard to collect ?

Has anyone tried to put together runs that didn’t have expensive issues killing the collection ? Is Rom or Marvel Two in one hard to collect ? I put together a run of Rom a year or two ago. A few issues were hard to find in the wild and I ended up ordering form Lonestar to fill them in, but the vast bulk of the run was gotten for $1 or less and the most I paid for any issue was around $3 for one of the annuals I had to order. Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2 might be a run killer for some, as the "death" of Thanos in it makes it a pricey issue. -M

I took six years to collect MoKF. I paid around $30 for the first issue, but no more than $3.00 ea. for every subsequent issue, and some were had for as little as $0.25.

Has anyone tried to put together runs that didn’t have expensive issues killing the collection ? Is Rom or Marvel Two in one hard to collect ? ROM and MTIO for the most part are affordable with select issues being price preemptive. For ROM the pair of X-Men co-starring issues jump up in price while MTOI certain issues guest stars can be more expensive like the Doc Savage issues. Literally it depends upon where you live it seems. Impossible to complete ANY series here in Phoenix anymore as no LCS carry's complete runs, instead focusing on single higher end sellers. Even utilizing the Phoenix Fan Fusion it was impossible to get full tuns of Marvels ROM or Tarzan. I had to get around 5- 7 issues from Lonestar.

Spent the day at one of the LCS going through $1 bins (unsorted), and I came across six or seven runs of The Question in there. I'm wondering if this issue was in any of them or if it is missing. I didn't bother to look since I don't collect the series, and with the haphazard nature of the boxes, it will be almost impossible to go back and find them unless I put in another 3 hours. Oh, well.

Only #1 (and 1st Issue Special # 8) were notably more expensive in putting together my Warlord run.
