Travis Charest drew some very nice pages but I heard that he was super slow. And I noticed that his backgrounds were sparse towards the end.

Another blast from the past from Rob the Golden Boy...
here he appeared on Dennis Miller's show circa 1991, and surprisingly Miller appears to be a classic Marvel fanboy...

IMO Rob's art is no different than any other artist that has a distorted cartoon look to their art. My only criticism is his lack of backgrounds & the fact that he never seems to complete anything. I never read his Marvel stuff or even his early Image work. My first exposure to his art was on DC's Hawk & Dove & then next his Awesome work which I enjoyed. I know he gets flak for his Heroes Reborn Capt America but it wasn't that bad. I also liked where he took those ideas with Fighting American. And he was smart enough to get Alan Moore!!! to relaunch his Image/Extreme stuff as the Awesome Universe.

Reading the Untold Story of Marvel Comics book recently, the thing that surprised me about Liefeld was a) what a nice guy he appears to be, b) how unbelievably popular he was with comic buyers back in the '90s, and c) how much money he made. On the latter point, he was one of a few Marvel artists that were living like rock stars in the early '90s, before the bubble burst.
I think his artwork is atrociously bad, but man, a LOT of comic book fans must've loved him at one point.

Not much of an artist, to say the least, but he does seem to be a very enthusiastic fan of good Bronze Age comics at the very least, judging from his posts of late on various comics-history FB groups I'm in.

US is the 80's you know I'm talking about you. :-)

For instance, I happened to see in my FB feed just now for the Back Issue (TwoMorrows mag) group that yesterday he posted this pic of purchases at a Cincinnati con -- I own all of those with the exception of the older Defenders issue (probably), SVTU #3 & Hero for Hire #15 -- those I have in Essential format instead.

Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Brett Booth, Michael Turner. When has Liefeld done something like this? not as bad as other 'versions' of the character i've seen in the past 9 or so years.

sometimes we must separate the 'artist's attempts' from what 'lacking-genitalia' such as levi 501 ads made them seem to be.
everything 90's Liefeld? yeah, okay, agreed.
but speaking as someone who's worked for comics and taught drawing/painting, you must be fair to to the man (apart from what he tweets or vlogs) and accept that he has TRIED to progress/develop/improve, and compared to his 1990's printed-excrement, he HAS improved.
which takes effort. and a tiny bit of self-intropection.
