At least Liefeld was able to realize real money for his creation, as derivative as it was. He's probably getting zip for Cable and Deadpool. The Image 7 absolutely made the right move in leaving Marvel.

John Romita Jr Jim Aparo John Byrne Is that true? That can't be true. In the case of Byrne, not true at all. Most of Byrne's contributions have been minor additions, redesigns and supporting characters, true, but he created or co-created: Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Kitty Pryde, Emma Frost and Sabretooth. Those four have been very lucrative for Marvel, particularly of late. Not to mention great yet less prominent creations like Alpha Flight, The Hellfire Club, Terrax, Omega Red and Proteus.

In the case of Byrne, he did co create those characters but he gets nary a mention on those motion pictures. I'm willing to bet that he doesn't get a dime either.

He's probably getting zip for Cable and Deadpool. Liefeld is getting more than he deserves for creating Deadpool. He got shout-outs in the films, has been touring the convention circuit and charging a handsome fee for autographs, and he's back in the cultural limelight -- all for creating a generic assassin who looked like Spider-Man. Everything Deadpool is that has made him a success owes nothing to Liefeld. And Cable? Really, what's so great about Cable? He stole Rachel Summers' backstory and the Terminator's face.

I guess you can argue the same about Batman and Bob Kane.

I think Deadpool is a strong design. You can see where many of his design elements were borrowed from, but the same is true of Batman, the Joker, Captain America, Captain Marvel (Fawcett...)

For a character to become popular, it has to have something that sets it apart from the rest. Deadpool, like it or not, has that something. I will admit that I never buy any books that star Deadpool, but I did enjoy the first movie a lot.

I didn't read the early Deadpool stuff, but I suspect much of the initial joke once the character took a turn towards absurdist humor was just how pointless and unneeded the character had previously been.

Agreed. I don’t think he became Bugs Bunny until he was written by someone else.

One of the only two Deadpool stories I ever read was done by Liefeld, and he was a dead serious character under Liefeld's pen.

Time to read some Deadpool comics and write a review.

Yeah, Joe Kelly was really the guy who made Deadpool the character we know today. Well, maybe not today, he actually had some depth back when Kelly wrote him.

At long last, Rob's model for his Captain America has come forward. Who says Liefeld isn't anatomically correct... -M
