My eyes!! My mind!! THEY BURN!!! I'm melting...MELTING!!! Well no, not really...but I do feel my brain short circuit whenever I see the wretched beyond WRETCHED art for the early Fantastic Four Unlimited issues, and not to mention I also weep for Mr. Trimpe.

I think his downfall was getting too much power too fast; not only did he never have to get better, he was allowed to actively get worse. His early work on New Mutants was actually stronger than his work just a couple years later on X-Force, because by that point he had so much power due to sales that Marvel started just letting him do what he wanted instead of having some editorial oversight on his artwork. Instead of making him at least try to fit into the house style in terms of storytelling basics, they were just like, you sold 2.5 million copies of X-Force #1, so do whatever you want. So he just got worse with time in stead of better. If he had had a few more years being shaped by editors, he might have turned out okay. In the space of two years, he went from complete unknown to one of the three most popular creators in comics to a complete joke among fans. totally agree. in that era it seemed to me like neither marvel nor dc had a clue what they were doing. DC just threw their arms in the air and let a load of acid fried brits do whatever they liked while Marvel had zero quality control or direction whatsoever. Rob's art and stories are an absolute car crash for me personally but his actual story i find a bit of a heartbreaker. Dan Clowes Pussey seems to be modelled on him or an amalgam of late 80s early 90s "superstar pencillers" and what started off as a really savage blasting of that scene ended up a really touching portrayal by the end. It's impossible not to like the man as a person and at the end of the day that's all that counts

Is there any Lifield art where he's inked by Vince Colletta?
I don't really want to see it. I'm just wondering how long it existed before the paper dissolved.

The Rob Liefeld Legacy can be summed up like this-because of his popularity Marvel made Herb Trimpe draw like this.... -M That's Herb?

That's Herb? Yup! -M Oh, the indignity! I never liked Trimpe that much, but to see him sinking so low…

But Colletta also did some not-so-great work. And when he was not-so-great, Colletta could turn in some cringe-worthy comics.

But i think he was dead by then. He didn't die until 1991, so it's possible (though nothing comcs up on GCD). But it's my understanding Colletta was more or less blacklisted at Marvel when Shooter got fired in 1987. Colletta was very angry about it and wrote a scathing letter to Marvel telling them to go eff themselves. I don't think we worked for Marvel again after that.

Colletta was looked down on because he took shortcuts which included erasing complicated pencils. His inking of Kirbys Thor was the golden age of the run.

Honestly, I think a lot of the 90s hate in general, and the Liefeld-bashing in particular, is just way, way, over the top. Sometimes people on the web just like to sound like they know what they are talking about, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to have an easy whipping boy and make fun of him. A picture is worth a thousand words. This is why I make fun of Rob...his artwork burns the skin out of my eyes. I seriously just cannot stand it, and because of it, avoid many 90s books like the plague. Look at his Captain America.... just simply awful. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not dissing Rob the person, Rob the anything else...just his contribution to comics, makes me want to grab a tambourine and have myself a little book-burning in a cornfield... As for Jim Lee...I buy Superman Unchained

Here's what herb himself said about his change in style
I figured the best person to tell me would be Trimpe himself, so I dropped him a line and he gave me a wonderfully in-depth reply.
I’ve been asked that question before, with some fans going so far as to feel sorry for the way Marvel made me change my style. Unfortunately, these were misdirected sympathies.
Truth was, it was a lark–but a lark with a purpose, all devised by myself. No one at Marvel suggested I change the way I draw or ink. I looked at the new guys’ stuff, and thought, hey, this is great. Very exciting. You can always learn from somebody else, no matter how long you’ve been doing a thing.
I did, however, think the style might lead to new work at a time when Marvel was already in trouble, and it did. FF Unlimited was my last series at Marvel, and contrary to what a lot of fans think, I think it was the best work I’d done–and, I had a whole lot of fun doing it. Very expressive. I think the newer influences in comic book art brought out a better me. Like I said, most of the fans of the earlier stuff would not agree. On one occasion, I inked a whole story with a brush, which is what I was raised on, and the editor objected asking me not to do that anymore. But in general, no one pressured me into a change.

I stand (or sit as the case may be) corrected. However, I am among those who disagree it was better than his earlier stuff, but that is entirely subjective. -M

I was SJNeal on CBR (still am, actually) but here I'm apparently sjneal. I mostly lurked on the old Classics forum, with a few exceptions. Most of those being shaxper's awesome reviews threads! Once you are signed up, you can edit your displayname to include caps and spaces again. It's how some of us got our old names back again. Awesome, thanks!!!
